Ayrton Senna, the Legend
Yesterday was holiday here in Brazil, but also was the 15th year without Airton Senna, probably our biggest sport legend. Senna was in my opinion and I believe in the most of the brazilians, and dare say the whole world's opinion, the best F1 driver ever. He was a true hero, watching him driving on the Sunday mornings was something that I can't describe, pure art, a genius that was able to do something that us, mere mortals couldn't understand.
This article is tribute to him, with some images and videos so we can remember and for those who didn't have the chance to watching who Airton Senna really was, a legend.
"I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's."

"With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high."

"Money is a strange business. People who haven't got it aim it strongly. People who have are full of troubles."

"Racing, competing, it's in my blood. It's part of me, it's part of my life; I have been doing it all my life and it stands out above everything else. "
Ayrton Senna - Amazing videos are here
"You will never know the feeling of a driver when winning a race. The helmet hides feelings that cannot be understood."

Being from Sweden I'll give an international perspective.
Here Senna is big, but it's not the first person that comes up when someone Swedish is asked to name the biggest Brazilian in sports. Here the first name you'd get is Pelé. Perhaps this is partly since Pelé had his breakthrough in Sweden in 1958, I don't know.
And F1 isn't always considered a sport either by some. Personally I don't know, I don't care, I just like to watch. People may call it what they want.
I watched the race from Imola live where he died. I was a fan of Michael Schumacher back then so my first reaction when Senna went of was to cheer, it didn't look that bad. But as time went on and the replays kept coming I got a really bad feeling.I remember telling my dad: -Look he moved, he moved... didn't he?
Later that evening when I heard the news of his death I was really sad. A couple of years later I stopped being a MS fan. Most might say Michael is the best ever. But this seasons results from Brawn GP has me questioning what MS would have done without Ross Brawn.
So is Senna the best ever?
I don't know, those things are hard to measure and for me personally it doesn't matter.
But I know one thing. Senna left a big void in F1 that no one has managed to fill. MS was never that kind of driver and I don't see anyone today that can be it either. Let's hope some of Ayrton's magic is passed over to Bruno.
Cheers to Ayrton Senna, he's a legend.
Miss those sundays mornings. Simply the best
that makes 2 of us, sunday mornings.. galvao bueno se empolgado loucamente a cada curva lol ..
The last video is simply amazing, I remember that race, it was raining and Senna was the only one who chose slick tires, it was insane and in less than 1 lap he had taken the first position.... Nobody will ever drive like him in those conditions, the guy was a machine, like Neo in matrix...
Great article, not specifically related to design but very inspiring.
Thanks Fabiano.
I'm italian, Ferrari fans, but Senna was the best, really I miss him.
Wonderful driver and man.
I thought Pelé was the biggest sport legend of Brazil... Oh well, I guess it's different in different circles.
Coolio!
I linked to your homepage via http://irrashonallyurs.blogspot.com/2009/01/20-blogs-you-cant-live-witho....
As soon as I saw the green and yellow, I knew it was Ayrton Senna's helmet.
Here in Seattle, the European races begin around 5am. I had stayed up all night (in case my alarm didn't go off).
Thankfully, American TV didn't show any of the accident aftermath -- we saw only an empty pit lane. When the horrible news finally came, it was such a shock, my legs actually crumpled under me.
It's wonderful to see so many great images and video of a driver whose likes we'll never see again.
Thank you so much,
Suzanne
we all love great sportmen and women, I'm sure Senna was a great one, and one should be respected. hope to see more heroes like Senna and Ali, they inspire everyone.
He really left a big void in F1.
But when you watch an F1 race, look real hard, you´ll still see him there. :)
True legend! Best driver, no doubt!
Nesse tempo o Galvão ainda sabia narrar hahaha já hoje...chato pra caraio :x
Senna is the best. That video from Metacafe gave me goosebumps. I recommend everyone watching it.
The saddest day of my childhood was his death, I will never forget those Sundays mornings watching his magic happening on tv.
And for those who doesn't live in Brazil: Nobody likes Pellé here, he talks too much.
The greatest ever!
A very good story, unfortunately with a very sad ending..
thanks for the reminder!
I really miss those days..
Amazing article, amazing hero! Thanks for such a great sunday article!
Regards
Great post Fabiano!
All the pictures and videos brought back that good felling of our sunday mornings ... for sure he was simply the best.
Watching Senna and Mansel, wheels locked at 180mph on a sunday afternoon with my dad is something i will never forget... Senna was an amazing driver and great embassador for the sport, Mansel and Senna made Formula 1 the exciting spectical it is sadly is not today..
a true great sadly missed.
Since Senna died i stoped watching F1, and Lewis Hamilton got me back to watch formula one, he brought the same kind of excitment that senna didnt bring me but surely not in the same level...
Senna left a big whole in the F1 as someone mentioned above and it will be hard to fill it, and lewis hamilton did fill a part of it for me. Even though I am brazilian i do support Hamilton instead of Massa as massa doenst give me the same excitement as Lewis does..
Sou brasileiro,e pra nós é uma pena ter perdido um homem como ele... hoje é um dia muito triste akii, amissoras de tv relembram o grande homem... Final é oque ele foi!
Airton para sempre
As a huge Schumi fan I can't say he is better than Senna but that doesnt make him less successful than Senna. both drivers' technique are simply unique and legendary. If Senna lives more he could reach to 7 titles or more who knows. but all these title numbers dont mean a lot. A legendary driver means that he can make impossible to possible. He can make a team champion from ground zero. He can win a race under extremly difficult condition.
World miss you Senna...
I'm from Argentina... Senna are the best pilot ever... I use to watch F1... but since Senna's dead I do not more.
Simples, humilde, uma lenda que poderia ser maior ainda... morreu antes do tempo dele. um excelente piloto de F1!
I agree! Ayrton Senna remains the best F1 driver ever. I count myself privileged to have met him once very briefly in the cockpit at Brands Hatch. He had a mystical almost magical aura about him. Long live the legend of Ayrton Senna!

errrr he was alright. hardly the best. the best dont die in a car crash
At the anonymous above that said that the best dont die ina car crash. if you dont know the fact dont write bullshit. it was a default in his car that made him crash not his drive skill.
though i respect yr opion in not think he was the best drive int eh F1. but when someone say rubish like you did. sorry
