Google CEO Eric Schimdt defines Web 3.0

abduzeedo - 08/08/2007

If you wanted to know what Web 3.0 is, the Google CEO Eric Schimdt at the Seoul Digital forum gave us this great definition of Web 3.0. He said:

"..While Web 2.0 was based on Ajax, Web 3.0 will be "applications that are pieced together" - with the characteristics that the apps are relatively small, the data is in the cloud, the apps can run on any device (PC or mobile), the apps are very fast and very customizable, and are distributed virally (social networks, email, etc)..."

Here you can find a great article defining Web 3.0. Thoughts: Defining Web 3.0

This is actually the first time that I heard about Web 3.0. Web 2.0 is still not mastered by most of SEO and other people whose works are Internet-related. When and how will Web 3.0 enter the scene? What is the probability that it will work?

Inevitably, Web 3.0 may arise out of the actual thing that makes the internet so beautiful – its own evolution. Through the social and community aspect of the web, will rise web 3.0 just the way web 2.0 evolved almost by itself. So, I don't think you can foresee it. In my opinion, he is still talking of web 2.0 and the opportunities it has given small companies (or, shall we say, the opportunities the small companies have begun to take and demand is what has formed web 2.0.) It has to work this way, not the other way, otherwise Web 3.0 will not be built on what the community needs but simply by what the big guns tell us – which is, really, back to the old days of pre-web!

I believe that web 3.0 is a future for small bussinesses. Database delivered to screen, no programming layer involved, advanced online based content management systems easily integratable with existing databases. Intellegent personalization and massive amounts of data loaded into the DOM of the client.

I don't want web 3.0, it's more interesting what web 4.0 will be about. I think the way from 2.0 to 3.0 is not that far, but nobody seems to know what will happen after everybody has it's highly customizable apps on their mobile and pc. Will naybody use these apps?

Its interesting how Web 3.0 is heavily focused on "applications." Its not exactly web sites, but the applications on the websites--that seems to be where the transition between web 2.0 and 3.0 has occurred according to Google CEO Eric Schimdt.

Anty device? Will it run on implantabel medical devices? That would be great! Consider the recent Medtronic Recall of the heart lead used for pacemakers and defibrillators has brought about lots of Medtronic Lawsuits from patients that need medtronic lead replacement surgery, if Web 3.0 would run on the device it would allow dynamic monitoring and increase the utility and safety of these implantable type medical devices!

I don't think we're anywhere near Web 3.0 yet. If you think how fundamentaly different Web 2.0 is from the normal Web we're still a long way off. In my opinion web 3.0 will be built upon a totaly different technology (IE, not PHP/AJAX). Eric Schimdt, in my eyes is just talking about adding a relatively large twist to Web 2.0.

I really am not sure, but what he's speaking about may be the widgets. Actually lots of sites distribute them nowadays, last.fm and yahoo can be mentioned to name a few.

Also , I totally do agree with him, it's aforeseeable, and way too clear to declare comments on. And yes, Web 3.0 is going to be a total new concept.
