Inspiration: Gustav Balderdash

July 04, 2008 from PauloGabriel's blog

We've already featured Gustav Balderdash's work in Wallpaper of the Week #8, and he's such a nice talented artist that we've asked him to write a little bit about his latest work, the Natural Selection mixtape.

The author says:

Natural Selection is a mixtape that I have been working on with drum n bass producer friend of mine NLB for the last two or three months. I chose to name it after the most important idea anyone has ever had. The name also suits the way that out of the tracks that I had chosen for the mix, only a few fitted together in tempo and feel, so it almost made istelf.

I have been into Hip-Hop since I had a music taste and I love the way it can mix with drum n bass, so originally I just wanted to put together a few of my favourite instrumentals and acapellas into a single mix that I could give to my friends for the summer.

I have recently become engrossed in the work of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, and Sam Harris, all of whom have transformed my world view within the last 6 months. I decided to sprinkle the music with snippets of their wisdom, amongst others like Charles Bukowski, and Sir David Attenborough. I am pleased with how Natural Selection has turned out, but there are still plenty of leftovers from this project and I have found quite a bit of material since finishing this, Nuff respect to NLB for his technical expertise on this project, the next one is going to be twice as nice!

Playing with Vectors in Illustrator
Playing with Vectors in Illustrator
Last week I decided to spend some time playing with Illustrator and trying to come up with a cool black and white artwork. My inspiration came from some skateboard deck designs which have this sort of 3D effect without using gradients or anything, and not exactly a woodcut effect either. After a few hours I was able to come up with a really nice design, but the most important thing, the whole process was an excellent way to improve my Illustrator techniques.

The wallpaper of this week is a design created by Samuel Larsson, a graphic designer based in Stockholm. The image is a super cool illustration with that cartoon feel, I've been using it for a few days already and I love it.
