Jeff Huang is a multidisciplinary freelance Art Director and Illustrator based in New York who specializes in Creative Design, Abstract Art, Photo Editing, and 3D. He has been creating digital art professionally for more than 7 years now and has produced work for many companies and publications worldwide. He is a proud senior member of international art collective and second home, Depthcore.

Known for his imagination, uncanny eye for detail, patience, and precision in skill & technique, he has a natural ability to develop a good relationship with his clients and other creatives. Jeff always lends his expertise, and loves to get involved in the creative process in order to improve and optimize a project.

What's a Show Reel?

"A demo reel, or show reel, is the motion picture or video equivalent of an artist's portfolio. The demo reel is frequently submitted with a résumé to a prospective employer. Creating a Graphic Portfolio Without a Client

The main problem designers face while beginning their careers is to find a client without having a portfolio to show. It’s hard to find a client to trust you to design him something without having any quality previous work to show him that you can make it. Here you will see and learn many ways that you can find to create a good quality portfolio without having that first client.

Creating a portfolio without a client doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do any work. This is not going to be easy and quick; this will take a lot of work and time but it all pays off at the end.

Be Organized

Organization is the key for saving time and being more productive. If you willing to put time and effort to work on creating a portfolio that can set your freelancing career you will have to organize your self and make a schedule in order to be able to produce more. Organize your work space and set working hours, that’s the only way you going to get yourself to produce something.

Work for Yourself

Work on personal projects that can further help promote your work. Designing something for yourself will be your first task, the good thing about working for yourself is that you have total freedom on the design but remember that is very important to set deadlines based on the time you have to work the same way you would if the work was for a client.

Start working on a set of wallpapers, 3 to 5 wallpapers based on a theme, also make sure to transform them into iphone wallpapers as well. When you done creating your portfolio this will help promote your work.

Design Posters

Designing Posters and printing them can give you an extra edge to your portfolio and give a future client the feeling that you have good knowlegde of what you doing both in designing and printing. The same way you worked on a set of wallpapers work on a set of posters based on a theme, that can help you create a series of posters related to each other which can be a rich set on your portfolio. In the future you can giveaway a couple prints of your posters to help promote your work.

Design a Calendar

Designing a nice and creative calendar can show a lot of your creativity and print solutions, this is a chance to make something inovative to show your future clients what you capable of creating. In the future you can giveaway a couple calendars and also promote your work.

Design a Picture Book

Select a few of your own photos and make a nice picture book, mix it with some good typography and have a one of a kind piece in your portfolio. This can also bring the interest of your friends and family to getting one too, it all ads up on your portfolio.

Designing for good contest can put a nice piece on your portfolio and also carry a name to it. Such designs contests like HugoCreate give you the opportunity to work on your own for a big brand. You don't have to win the contest, just by making a good piece to later display on your portfolio is already a win.

Collab Work

Do a collab work with other designers that are in the same situation as yours. It's a great way to expand your work and learn more about working in group. Look for people that are hungry for work just as much as you are and invite them for a private project, trade ideas and built a design concept, at the end it's all going to your portfolio.

Brand Yourself

Now that you already got some decent and creative pieces on your portfolio it's time to move on and get your self a nice logo and a website, that's another way to improve your portfolio within your own work. Every client that goes in your website will analyze it as well as your portfolio because it's also part of it.

Design a Website

Designing your own website can be a challenge but at the end it you can say you did, get help from web designers if you need. There is a lot of services that convert PSD to HTML in case coding is a problem. Remember to stay away from templates in order to remain original.

Design a Business Card

Now that you got a nice portfolio with a website to display them, it's always good to have a nice business car that you can give away everywhere you go, remember that the business card will represent you and your work when you not there. Conclusion

If you follow through you will get the experience of designing different projects for different medias and learn a lot on your own with your own mistakes. Building a portfolio on your own without clients is very difficult, very difficult to stay focus on something that doesn't pay off right the way.

Make sure to set deadlines to every project and work on it as if it was worth a million dollars, it all pays off in the end.

Now all you need is a client, with a nice portfolio it will be like a lot easier than before.

Amazing Digital Work of Kyle Lambert

Kyle is an illustration an animation student from the United Kingdom who creates amazing digital paintings. He works in a variety of styles which include highly detailed photo-realistic portraits, rough concepts and storyboards, digital animation and motion graphics. His work is primarily digital but has a background in fine painting with oils and watercolors.

Kyle recently won a nationwide storyboard competition for the movie watchmen. His entry was chosen by Watchmen comic book artist Dave Gibbons. He has the ambition to work on the production of movies once he graduates from University.

How to Promote Your Work

Many new designers might think that having their own site is a real important thing, that it will make their work known, and it get them jobs and money. Well, having your own site is important, but it doesn't mean that you don't need other tools to place your work out there.

It is a geniune mistake to think that your site will work solo. The internet is a big place, and if you're a new designer, your site might be very much as an isolated island in the pacific, like this one. What you'll need to make your little island known is to build brigdes from main land to your island. Main lands are the big and famous portfolio / image sites, that allow you to make your account and place your work there. That's free promotion to you.

Also, you'll get real feedback, unlike you'd get in your own site. Flickr, DeviantArt and Behance are only a few examples where you'll get this kind of visibility. For example, there are some really famous artists that not only have their personal sites, but also have their portfolios in these other sites, such as Guilherme Marconi, James White and our very own Fabio Sasso, all these at Flickr.

At DeviantArt you'll find another great roll of artists, such as Cris Vector, Artgerm and Loish (my personal favorite). There's also the DeviantArt shop, where you can sell prints of your work.

At Behance, another great portfolio site, you'll find more of these awesome artists. Glenn Jones, the Lichtfaktor crew and Peter Jaworowski are some of them.

Of these, only one or two don't have a personal site, but that only proves that if you don't want to have your work sitting alone on an island, you'll find everything you need in main land. You don't have to get worried about domain and host payments, you don't have to worry about making the site layout. But of course, if you're a web designer, having your little island is still really important.

Anyways, I just trying to make my point when I say: new designers, you must join one or more of these sites, unless you're a goddamn Da vinci and you make your island some kind of Atlantis... These sites offer you almost infinite feedback if you make the right connections, and that will make you a better designer. And that's pretty much it. These sites are an awesome source of promotion to you! Use it wisely! I hope you guys liked this post! Cheers. ;)

Ok, I know that there are a lot of excellent design communities out there, but I really like this one, design:related. It has a nice design, simple to use, active members and of course great jobs. I added some works there from our company Zee, and the feedback that I've been receiving is great. Maybe almost all of you guys already knew that, but for those who don't know, check it out!

design:related(tm) is a community site and inspiration tool that brings together creative people from different disciplines (and parts) of the design world. Design:related serves to motivate designers to share ideas, inspire, and be inspired.

You should show your masterpieces in many places you can, and this is another great application to do that. Bellow we are giving to you some of the features of design:related.
