Fast Eddie's Barber Shop

Fast Eddie's is a no nonsense barber shop found in Allston, MA. one of Boston's many historical neighborhoods. This place is the epitome of traditional Americana, which I wanted the mark and typography to represent; Franklin Gothic and ATF Bodoni scanned from a letterpress book with a mashup illustration combining an iconic eagle and barber's comb.

I wanted to stay away from the "red, white & blue" barber pole theme and stick with something high contrast and modern. Stark, rich blacks screen printed on whitewash 100 lb. card stock give the collateral a strong masculine feel while referencing the brand's age and history.

Poe Covers Reimagined

A tribute in my own way after discovering how much I love Edgar Allan Poe's work. I wanted the design to reflect his tongue-in-cheek way with words. His themes were very dark and at sometimes too morbid to even read, but he always had a way of conveying them in an almost whimsical, comedic fashion. I thought this was truly the beauty of his work. To be able to illicit such a broad range of emotions from the reader and in such a short amount of time, remembering that the majority of his stories aren't more than 20 or so pages.

Identity for a taproom and restaurant in Kenmore square, inspired by it's port town history.

Rat City Beer Co.

Rat City is a boutique brewery specializing in artisanal craft beer, located in the heart of Allston, MA. The company was named as a tribute to the neighborhood it resides in, notorious for it's overwhelming rat population. Being ever optimistic, the name was a way to show local pride as well as differentiate itself from the many other brewhouses in Boston and the surrounding area.

Drawing much influence from the prohibition era, the design and copy give a nod to the classics while still remaining relevant and contemporary. The brand reflects a blue collar, D.I.Y. aesthetic that is steeped in tradition with respect for the craft of home brewing.

Amazing Poster Design

When it comes to graphic design, there are few pieces that I really love to do. One of them is posters! I actually don't know why I like it so much, but every time I find some posters pieces in the web I really appreciate it! Ruben Córdoba Schwaneberg makes some amazing posters.

I really like the "3D" feel in these, because if you look at these carefully, you'll see some red and blues displaced above the images. I really like it... it makes these pieces pop out! Hello, my name is Youssef Sarhan & I regularly write on my design blog over at www.whiteinkblog.com, and I also like to share my posts here, on abduzeedo. With a great audience and community it's a brilliant forum for discussion. In this feature I try to shed some light on the development process and/or elements of a selected design. By deconstructing the design into layout, typeface, colours & use of images we will hopefully develop a better understand of how the final result was achieved. I feel that this degree of awareness is crucial to a graphic designers development; being able to not only identify the design elements but the rationale behind them.(Via: www.whiteinkblog.com)

In this edition of Design Deconstructed (DD) I am going to be observing the brand new website of the White House (http://www.whitehouse.gov/).

Within minutes of President Obama being sworn in the new site had gone live. I'd imagine it has received a huge spike in visitors but it seems to be coping perfectly. I'm trying to find out the designer/company who is behind it, so if anyone knows?

It looks fantastic. It's clean, feels like a position of authority and most importantly approachable. It doesn't look like a news site, like it used to. Here's an image of the homepage.

As you can see it's pretty sharp looking. You can view a 100% version if you click the image. I have overlaid the grid over it, at least a grid which I think fits. It's a 3 column grid thats subdivided again into 3 more columns. The subdivisions really come into play in the bottom footer which has many links to different categories.

Starting at the top, I think the header shows the level and attention to detail that went into making this site look how it does. It's detailed, precise and well-planned. These small images can really set a design off.

Further down, a divider which separates the main content and the categorical links. You may like to click and view the image at 100%.

Love the use of little stars in the required field instead of an asterisk*

Next is the Navigation, easy to use rollover bar, I love the use of italc/regular fonts. Set in Georgia.

I feel overall the site suits the new President. I'd love to see the development process to get a real idea of how it came to this end. It's a nice alternative to his also excellently designed www.change.gov website which he used during the campaign.

The subtle use of the semi-transparent white box is a nice touch. Nothing too over the top on the site but at the same time it stands out and airs class.

The primary typeface for titles of the site in Gerogia. Copied from what I think is the css.

Here is an image I was saving until the end; Its the before version, as you can see. It's a good change. A huge improvement from the previous site, which looked like a news site. Hopefully this will be a reflection on the presidency.

Inspiration: Comics and Graphic Novels - Part One: Superman

Comics and graphic novels feature some of the greatest and underrated works of art in the world of design. In this article, I will attempt at showing you just a glimpse of the wonders from the likes of Superman, Batman and Spider-Man.

For the older generation, reading comic books was the ultimate pass time, well before TVs and computers became easily accessible. Unfortunately, I'm a member of the modern generation, where comics just aren't what they used to be. Targetted mainly for younger kids now, pages are splashed with lots of colours and the stories are lacking in gripping plots. It seems Marvel have gone down this route considerably more than the likes of DC, who have kept tradition with darker and more adult storylines for their legendary characters, such as Superman and Batman. This can be seen as half the tandem, with the film industry pedalling on the other end with recent renditions of the superheros' pursuits.

But don't feel despondent. Much can be praised and remembered from the past. They weren't called the Golden and Silver Age for nothing. Superman, without a doubt, is the most famous superhero in the world and has become part of our reality, as well as on paper. He first appeared in Action Comics back in 1938, a year before the Second World War had begun, which could be seen as poignant timing.

A mint condition copy of this first issue can fetch up to a massive $350,000, due to its rareness. Be careful not to pick up yourself one of the reprints; they aren't worth anywhere near as much as the originals. It is claimed that there are only 100 left in circulation.

Superman took different routes during the 40s, 50s and 60s, featuring in a number of different publications, some good, some less so. By 1986, 48 years after his creation, Superman saw himself relaunched (due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths series). With the relaunch came a slightly darker personality and also his unfortunate death at the hands of Doomsday.

However, his death wasn't permanent (well, he is Superman!) and he returned, with longer hair and later married Lois Lane in 1996. Since then, Superman has reprised his role as savour of the USA, as well as the world, adhering to his strong moral code and helping to protect the planet he has called his new home.

My name is Starchild, aka Luke Davis, and I'm a student from England. I passed A-Levels in Graphic Design, Mathematics and Further Mathematics and will be studying Computer Science at Nottingham Trent University in October.

I was never an artistic prodigy at an early age, but I still doodled and drew things like any normal child. As I got into high school, however, I began to enjoy art more and more, and managed to get an A at GCSE, probably my greatest achievement to date. It was very hard work, but it was worth it. Initially, I wanted to do Graphic Design at university, but I didn't want to leave my other talent behind, maths, so I decided to make a compromise: do computer science at uni and still continue my graphic design work, but on a casual, freelance basis. Garbage Pail Kids

One of my most vivid childhood memories is about collection those awesome Garbage Pail Kids cards. The art was pretty funny, even though it was gross most of the time. It's always nice to remember those times.

Here in Brazil, it was called "Gang do Lixo" meaning "Garbage Gang"... and it was amazingly found in lots of countries back then. The GPK was release in 1985 and was a big hit... it mocked the Cabbage Patch Kids, which was the cute version of GPK. Unfortunally, it is REALLY hard to find the card arts... I found some new art at Luis Diaz' site, one of the artists behind GPK, but the sites with the original series images got only low quality pieces. So, check these out! Hope you remember these.
