Vintage Typography Experiment in Illustrator and Photoshop

We all love typography and especially the vintage/retro ones. There's something on those artworks that catch our eyes and makes us really crazy about them. Despite the fact that some are quite old and done with rudimentary process the quality of the design is amazing and that's why books are the best way to get inspired by those and especially trying to learn how to do that using modern tools like Illustrator and Photoshop.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create a nice vintage/retro typography based on an artwork from the book New Vintage Type: Classic Fonts for the Digital Age. The whole process will take you 2-3 hours, but it's quite simple. However it requires time. I hope you enjoy it and keep practicing always.

Simple Sketch

Step 1

Open Illustrator and create a new document. The size doesn't even matter because it's vector and we will finalize our work in Photoshop. Type the words "inspiration" and "speaks'". Use uppercase. For the speaks, create 3 different text objects, 2 for the S and one for peaks. Make the Ss bigger than the peaks like the image below.

Step 2

Select the word peaks and go to Object>Envelop Distort>Maker with Warp. Select Ark Lower. Use - 25% for the Horizontal.

Step 3

With the Ellipse Tool (L) create 3 ellipses like the image below. Note that some have thicker strokes than the others.

Step 4

Agai with the Ellipse Tool (L) add 2 circles. One at the top and the other at the bottom of the ellipses.

Step 5

Select the Blend Tool and click on the top circle, then on the botton one to create the blend. Edit the number of steps until you have something like the image below. This values might change depending on your design.

Step 6

Create an ellipse in between the 2 big ones, this new ellipse will be the path for the circles. Delete half of the ellipse then. With the Direct Selection Tool (A) select the line that the blend follows and then select the half of ellipse let. Go to Object>Blend>Place Spine. Now the circles will follow the ellipse spine.

Step 7

Duplicate the blend and flip it vertically using the transform tools via pathfinder (View>Pathfinder).

Step 8

Add more text, in this case I added by ABDUZEEDO. Also add 2 lines one at the top and the other at the bottom.

Step 9

Keed adding more elements, this time I added a rounded rectangle using the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Then I typed ABDUCTED BY DESIGN.

Step 10

With the Rectangle Tool (M) create 2 rectangles, the top one thinner than the bottom and position it next to the big ellispe.

Step 11

With the Spiral Tool create a spiral to use in the end of one of the rectangles.

Step 12

With the Ellipse Tool (L) create a ellipse to fill the end of the spiral.

Step 13

Now with the Star Tool add one star, then duplicate it twice to have 3. Align and ditribute them uniformly.

Step 14

Now just duplicate elements to have the center part as the image below.

Step 15

Again with the Spiral Tool create spirals for the lines of the By Abduzeedo element.

Step 16

Select the elements of the By Abduzeedo part and go to Object>Envelop Distort>Envelop with Warp. Use Arc with the same 25% Horizontal.

Step 17

With the Line Segnent Tool (\) add 2 lines and then with the Blend Tool create a diagonal pattern like the image below.

Step 18

The select the Inspiration Speaks part and group them. Duplicate it once and change the color to white. Move this new copy so it is beneath the black text, and also move a few pixels down and right. After that duplicate this white layer and move it a few more pixels down and left, but then cut it (Edit>Cut). Select the diagonal pattern and go to View>Transparency. You will see 2 thumbs, one with the pattern and another empty. Double click on the empty one to enable the clip mask, then copy the white text in place (Command + F). That will mask the pattern with the text object.

Step 19

This is the final vector object we have. Notice that I also duplicate the By Abduzeedo part. It's up to you here, the idea is try different things :)

Step 20

Open Photoshop and import the vector image. You can do that by copying and pasting or exporting a bitmap from Illustrator. In my case the latter was the fastest one, so it was the one I recommend. Also I added here a image of the Abduzeedo logo I created in Pixelmator a long time ago for testing and place it in the center of the ellipse.

Step 21

Go to Image>Adjustments>Invert. Now we have a black background with white elements.

Step 22

Duplicate the image and with the new layer go to Filter>Sketch>Contê Crayon. Use 13 for the Foreground Level, 10 for the Background Level, Sandstone for the Texture, 150% for the Scaling and 5 for the Relief.

Step 23

With the Brush Tool (B) and some vintage/dirty brushes from Eduardo Recife (http://www.misprintedtype.com/v4/) start painting with black and white over the image. Also add a new layer and start paiting with white only. Tip: Go to Window>Brush (F5) and then create a brush activating the Shape Dynamics, Scattering and Transfer. That way you can paint of the image without looking too uniform.

Conclusion

Here is the final image, you can exaggerate a littel bit because my idea here is use this design on top of an photo, then using Screen for the Blend Mode, all the black will be transparent and only the white will be shown.

As you can see, the design process is quite simple and it's all about trying and practicing. Now we understand a bit on how this vintage elements are creating, therefore we can start creating our own. The typography books were indeed very useful.

L.A Noire Neon Style in Photoshop

A few months ago I started seeing some poster in San Francisco about this game called L.A Noire. The text effect was really cool, sort of old style neon effect. I know I have done a few tutorials showing how to create this type of effect, but I needed to do that again in Photoshop.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create the text effect like you see in the L.A Noire game cover. The whole tutorial will take about 1-1:30h. It's a bit tricky but it's not easy and the outcome is really cool.

Step 1

The first thing to do is create the text you will use for the background of the neon. I used Illustrator for this part because it's easier to play with fonts. So basically I am using Arial Black for the font, however I changed the B, D and O so they are not so rounded.

Step 2

To create the neons use the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Start with a 100% rounded rectangle, then duplicate it and move it so you have one next ot the other. After that with the Direct Selection Tool (A) delete the rounded of the top of one of the rectangles and the bottom of the other. Use the image below for reference.

Step 3

Create the rest of the letters. Look at the B, D, and O. To create those letters you will basically repeat the previous step however with some different tweaks to make them fit in the character you are working on.

Step 4

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I am using 2560x1440 for the size. Fill the background with black and then copy the ABDUZEEDO work from Illustrator and paste it in Photoshop. I am using yellow (#f0af17) for the color.

Step 5

Go to Layer>Layer Styles>Inner Glow. Use Lighter Color for the Blend Mode, 60% for the Opacity, Center for the Source, 20% for the Choke and 60 pixels for the Size.

Step 6

Select Inner Shadow. Use black for the color, Linear Burn for the Blend Mode, 40% for the Opacity, 45º for the Angle, 10 pixels for the Distance, 5% for the Choke and 5 pixels for the Size.

Step 7

Now let's use some texture to give more realism. The one I am using is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can find it at http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-20761540/stock-photo-metal-plate-backgro...

Step 8

Change the texture Blend Mode to Overlay at 30% Opacity.

Step 9

Duplicate the text and fill the layer with black, after that start duplicating and moving 2 pixels up and left. Repeat that a few times to create a sort of 3D extrusion. After that select all layers you created for that effect and merge them into one (Layer>Merge Layers).

Select the layer and go to Layer>Layer Styles>Stroke. Use 14 pixels for the Size, 40% Opacity and (#b47200) for the color.

Step 10

Copy the neon objects from Illustrator and paste it in Photoshop. Then go to Layer>Layers Styles>Blending Options. Change the Fill Opacity to 0%.

Step 11

Select Drop Shadow. Use black for the color, Linear Burn for the Blend Mode, 40% for the Opacity, -23% for the Distance, 5% for the Spread, 5 pixels for the Size.

Step 12

Select Inner Shadow. Use Multiply for the Blend Mode, #865200 for the Color, 50% for the Opacity, 120º for the Angle, 1 pixel for the Distance, 2% for the Choke, 2 pixels for the Size and for the Contour use the same I used in the image below.

Step 13

Select Outer Glow. For the Blend Mode use Color Dodge at 50% Opacity and white for the Color. Also change the Spread to 0 and the Size to 10 pixels.

Step 14

Select Inner Glow. Then use Color Dodge for the Blend Mode at 100% Opacity. Also change the Source to Center, Choke to 2%, Size to 2 pixels, Range to 5% and Jitter to 100%.

Step 15

The neon is nice but it need some highlights. To do that is pretty simple. Create a folder in the Layers Palette and change its Blend Mode to Color Dodge. Add a layer inside the folder and then with the Brush Tool (B) a very soft brush and white for the color start painting some areas you want to highlight. You can see in the image below in in the letters how some have this brighter area.

Step 16

Now let's do the same but this time to create some dark spots. So add a new folder but this time change the Blend Mode to Linear Burn at 80%. Then add the layer inside the folder and with the Brush Tool (B) and a soft brush with black for the color paint some dark areas. Use the image below for reference.

Step 17

Select all layers and duplicate them, after that merge all duplicated layers into one. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 5 pixels for the Radius.

Conclusion

Change the Blend Mode to screen and with the Eraser Tool (E) delete most of the layer leaving only the areas that are close to the bright spots. As you can see to create the effect is pretty simple, basically some layer styles and blend modes, but it's a nice technique to use in future projects, especially icons. Now it's up to you :)

Embroidery Effect with Illustrator and Photoshop

I have received quite a few emails asking me how to create a embroidery effect in Photoshop. It is a really nice effect and I had no idea how to do that in Photoshop. So one of these days while running I sort of had this idea of using the Scribble effect in Illustrator and then going to Photoshop to make it look real. After giving it a try I got a very nice result and that is what I share with you today.

So for this tutorial I will show you how to create a embroidery effect using Illustrator and Photoshop. The whole process is quite simple and it will take an average of 45 minutes to get it done.

Step 1

Open the logo or shape you want to apply the effect in Illustrator. In my case I am using the Abduzeedo logo, the 2011 version.

Step 2

Select the shapes and go to Effect>Stylize>Scribble. The Scribble Options will open and you will be able to customize the settings. The Abduzeedo logo has a sort of 3D effect, so I used different angles for the Scribble direction.

Step 3

Now it's time to go to Photoshop. The first thing to do here is to find a really cool texture. The one I am using is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can find it at http://goo.gl/PNAHF

Place the texture in your design. Again, the texture is really important to make your design look real.

Step 4

Copy the logo from Illustrator and paste it in Photoshop. I aligned it in the center of my canvas.

Step 5

Go to Layer>Layer Styles>Inner Shadow. For the Blend Mode use Color Dodge with white for the color at 45% Opacity. For the Angle use 90º, 3 pixels for the Distance, 0% Opacity and 3 pixels for the Size. Also for the Contour use the one I used in the image below.

Step 6

Select Inner Glow. For the Blend Mode use Linear Burn with black for the color at 40% Opacity and 0% Noise. Change the Size to 8 pixels and keep the rest as it is.

Step 7

Duplicate the layer once and move it up a few pixels and to any size a few pixels as well.

Step 8

Duplicate the layer a few more times and move it to the sides and up and down. The idea is make it look less uniform. After that select all layers and merge them (Layer>Merge Layers)

Step 9

Go to Layer>Layer Styles>Drop Shadow. Use black for the color with Color Burn for the Blend Mode and 50% Opacity. For the Angle use 120º, for the Distance keep 0, for the Spread use 0% and for the Size use 15px.

Step 10

Select Inner Glow and then for the Blend Mode use Color Dodge at 50%, white for the color, Center for the Source, 0 for the Choke and 40 pixels for the Size.

Step 11

This is the result after the layer styles. The whole idea is to create the highlight and the depth that we always see on the embroidery effects.

Step 12

Here I added the Abduzeedo word with the custom font with the same effect. Just repeated the previous steps.

Step 13

Select all layers and duplicate them. After that go to Layer>Merge Layers. You can use the keyboard shortcut for that Command (mac)/Control (pc) + Shit + Alt + E. Then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Change the Blend Mode to Screen.

Conclusion

Go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide all then with the Brush Tool (B) and a very soft brush with white start painting in the center to make that area visible.

As you can see the technique is pretty simple, it's all about some layer styles and the Scribble effect in Illustrator. There's also another ways to do that, like with custom brushes, but I think the scribble filter does a really good job for a quick result with nice realism.

Fluffy Clouds in Photoshop

Last Saturday while chatting with a friend of mine he asked me how to create some fluffy style clouds, he told me that he has been seeing that quite often on Dribbble. I decided to check that out and there were indeed lots of amazing cloud designs, then I thought to myself that it would be a cool idea create one in Photoshop as well.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create an wallpaper with some very stylized and super fluffy clouds in Photoshop. We will use basic tools and Layer Styles to create the effect. The whole process will take from 30-45 minutes but I believe there is quite a few nice tips for those who are beginning in Photoshop.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I am using 2560x1440 pixels for the size. After that make the background layer editable by double clicking on it, then go to Layer>Layer Styles>Gradient Overlay. Use Radial for the Style and for the colors use #ddeffa and #96ccee for the light and dark colors.

Step 2

With the Ellipse Tool (U) create a circle. The color doesn't really matter at this point.

Step 3

Createa nother circle and move it to the right side of the previous. Make it a little bit smaller too.

Step 4

Add another circle next to the previous one. Use the image below for reference, notice that the circles overlap one another.

Step 5

Let's add yet another circle, this time a much smaller one and on top of the previous one.

Step 6

To finish the shape of the cloud add another circle, this time a bigger one. Once you have the cloud shape you like, group them and duplicate the group, then go to Layer>Merge Layers. You will have one layer with the cloud but the circles will be necessary later on in the tutorial

Step 7

Select the layer with the cloud, the one we merged, and go to Layer>Layer Styles>Color Overlay. Use white for the color.

Step 8

Select Bevel and Emboss. For the Style use Inner Bevel, for the Depth 100%, for the Size 8 pixels, for the Soften 16 pixels, for the Angle 90º, for the Altitude 37º, for the Gloss Countour use the one I used in the image below. Also for the Highlight Mode and Shadow Mode use black for the color with Color Burn for the Blend Mode and 54% opacity for the first and 60% for the last.

Step 9

Select Inner Glow. Use 100% Opacity with white for the color and then Edge for the Source, 0% for the Choke and 100 pixels for the Size. Use the image below for more values.

Step 10

Now select Inner Shadow and then folow the image belo for the values.

Step 11

The last Layer Style we will use is Drop Shadow, it wold not be exactly necessary in terms of realism but the idea of the shadow is to give some contrast between the cloud and the background as they use the same colors.

Step 12

Here is the final result of the cloud we created with the layer styles. It's already a very nice outcome however I think it still needs some depth.

Step 13

To add depth we will do something really simple. Using the circles for reference, we will create new layers with them so they will have the same layer styles as the cloud but in circles, that way we will add some volume to our cloud. The first thing though will be reduce the opacity of the cloud layer to 30%.

Now, create a marquee selection of one of the circles, then select the cloud layer and duplicate and go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selecion. Move this new layer so it is underneath the cloud.

Step 14

Select the mask of the circle we created in the previous step and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 20 pixels for the Radius.

Step 15

With that amount of blur the circle gets very subtle, like the image below. So if you want to have more highlight use less blur.

Step 16

Repeate the same thing for the other circles. Notice that you can unlink the layer mask from the alyer and move the layer to create some more random effects, like I did here in the circle on the left.

Step 17

Here is the final result I got after adding the volume. The cloud now looks super fluffy. But still it's not done.

Step 18

Time to add some rainbows, I created this one using rectangles with the rainbow colors. After that I merged into one layer and applied a gaussian blur in the area that is underneath the cloud to create a nice transparency effect.

Step 19

Create a marquee selection with the shape of the cloud and add a new layer, the fill it with the rainbow colors and apply a guassian glur with at least 100 pixels for the radius. After that move it underneath the other layers used to create the cloud.

Step 20

Duplicate the cloud twice. Resize and flipp them horizontally to create a nice composition. Notice that I didn't duplicate the rainbow colors.

Step 21

Now let's add some text. I used Val for the font and just add the word Abduzeedo in white. But applied some Layer Styles to create the same fluffy effect.

Step 22

For the text layer styles just follow the values in the images below.

Step 23

Duplicate all layers and merge them into a one, then go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Use 1.5% for the Gaussian.

Conclusion

After a few steps and a good 45 minutes of work we have a nice fluffy style cloud design. I am always trying to learn new ways to use layer styles, I think it's one of the most powerful features in Photoshop, for this tutorial I answer a question of a friend of mine who wanted to know how to create some nice icon style clouds but next time might be one of your questions. So if you have any suggestion for tutorials just send us an email with the effect you would like us to show how to do it, if we cn of course :)

Cool Flying Eye Illustration in Illustrator CS5

It's been quite some time since the last we have posted a full Adobe Illustrator tutorial, we most of the times Photoshop and Illustrator, so in this tutorial Marcos Torres will show us how to create a really cool Flying Eye illustration using basic shapes using only Illustrator. The whole process is very straightforward with a nice outcome.

Step 1

First of all, open Illustrator and create a new document. This new document should have 29,7 x 21 cm. Now, using the Ellipse Tool ( L ) create a perfect circle ( you can hold shift + alt while using the tool, this makes easier to make a perfect circle). Than add some light gradient and use 5 pt. Oval brush to make it look more cool.

Step 2

Again, using the Ellipse Tool ( L ) create this pink circle and move in to the border of the white circle. Use the Gradient Tool ( G ) and add a light pink gradient in it, also add a 2 pt stroke in it.

Now, create a black circle with a grey stroke using the Ellipse Tool ( L ). Than, using the Pen Tool ( P ) you should do a shadow on the black circle with the same color of it’s stroke.

Use again the Pen Tool ( P ) to in order to create this shape, choose a white fill and change the opacity to 10%. It should look like this:

Finally, create these two little circles with the Ellipse Tool ( L ) and place them like this.

Step 3

Using the Line Segment Tool ( \ ) create these lines with 1 pt of stroke in pink color. This might take some time till you make all of them around the black circle.

Now with the Pen Tool ( P ) draw a shape for shadow with a pink fill, then choose the blending mode called Multiply.

Using the Pencil Tool ( N ) draw a shape with a pink fill, then select Filters > Gaussian Blur and use a 7 px blur. Change the opacity of the shape to 60 % to get more light and transparent, it should look like this.

Finally, let’s make the Iris reflections, choose the Pen Tool ( P ) and make the shapes. After, change it opacity to 70 %. The iris is done, let’s skip to the sclera.

Step 4

Using the Brush Tool ( B ) choose a 0,25 pt brush to make these veins, now this is cool trick: choose all veins and go to Object > Expand Appearance to turn the strokes into shapes. In order to make it looks more realistic, make a gradient fill in all these veins, like the example below:

Using the Pen Tool ( P ) and make the grey shapes around the sclera, then choose the blending mode called Multiply. The eyeball is complete, let’s proceed to the wings.

Step 5

Make a new layer, then using the Pen Tool ( P ) draw the basic shape of a wing. Using the Gradient tool ( G ) make a gold gradient on the wing. Again, use the Pen Tool ( P ) and draw a second line of curvy shapes on the wing, like this.

Now we have to make the reflections and shadows, this will take sometime, since you will need to do one shape at the time. Using the Pen Tool ( B ) create white shapes close to the borders like the example below:

Now let’s make the shadows, use again the Pen Tool ( P ) but this time make sure to make the grey shapes next to the strokes of the wings. After that, choose the blending mode called Multiply, it should look like this:

To make the other wing, duplicate first wing layer using the Selection Tool ( V ) + alt. Then reflect the wing, resize it and position it like the picture below.

Step 6

Now let’s give a sense of movement to it, create a new layer and use the Brush Tool ( B ) and make some black lines with a 0,75 stroke. This will give a movement impression to the image.

Now let’s skip to the halo, using the Ellipse Tool ( L ) make two circles like a ellipse, then go to the pathfinder panel and use the Minus Front shape mode, this will make the shape of the center subtract the other shape. Using the Gradient Tool ( G ) create a gold gradient with 0,75 pt yellow stroke.

Now, duplicate this elliptical shape using the Selection Tool ( V ) + alt, and put it above like the example below, you might have to change the direction of the gradient to look better.

Finally, let’s create its shadow, use the Pen Tool again to draw a black shape next to the opposite border of the glow, then change it opacity to 10 %.

To finalize, let’s make the shadow and the glow on the halo. Using the Pen Tool ( P ) , make this shape close to the corner of the halo, than change it’s opacity to 75 %.

Step 7

This is the trickiest part of the tutorial: making the blood. First of all, create a new layer and then using the Pen Tool ( P ) or the Pencil Tool ( N ), make the shapes that resemble drops on the eye. Using the gradient tool, make a red gradient like this.

Now duplicate this shape using the Selection Tool ( V ) + alt, then delete it’s fill and put a 2 pt of a red stroke on it.

Making the shadow is obviously the trickiest part, there’s not a shortcut here: using the Pen Tool ( P ) you will have to make the shapes with red gradients and the Multiply blending mode, this will take a while. Don’t forget to make all of these shapes below the drops stroke layer, so you won’t have to bother if they are sizing perfectly.

Make a group with all the shadows and hide this layer. Now we are going to make the glows, this may take you a long time, since it’s just about using the Pen Tool ( P ) to make the light pink shapes close to the borders.

Finally, you can add some details like the gradients in order to look more glossy.

Step 8

Final step, we are going to draw the drops of the blood, using the Ellipse Tool ( L ) make a circle and add the same gradient and stroke of the blood, you can copy it by using the Eyedropper Tool ( I ).

Using the Pen Tool ( P ), draw the shape on the border of the circle and use a red gradient, then choose the Multiply blending mode.

Finally, you can draw the white shapes with the Pen Tool ( P ) and the Ellipse Tool ( L ), then change their opacity to 75 %. Duplicate the layer of the drop as you want using the Selection Tool ( V ) + alt.

The Final Result

Well, I might say this tutorial is all about knowing how to use simple shapes to create something cool, you can add wherever background you want to this image, a pretty blue sky seems to be a good choice. Hope you like the tutorial guys, see you next time.

Reader Tutorial: Typography Wallpaper in Photoshop

We have accepted some tutorials from readers and we think it's really good to open the blog, so anyone can share their skills with the community. Because of that, we will start the "Reader Tutorial" series. If you have or want to write a tutorial and publish it here on Abduzeedo, just send it via email to us. Thank you very much and enjoy our first tutorial from Jonathan Connolly.

Hey guys this is Creative Volition, an advertising and design agency based out of South Florida. Just a quick thanks to Abduzeedo for being such a great help to the design community. Also a special thanks to everyone at Creative Volition for making our design agency what it is today.

Here is a quick tutorial from one of our latest designs. Hopefully this tutorial can benefit in your pursuit of becoming a better designer.

Step 1

Create a new document at 1200 x 800 pixels with a resolution of 72dpi. Start off by importing all of your vector designs separately into a Photoshop canvas. In this case we divided our vectors into 3 separate smart objects and dragged them into the Photoshop canvas.

Step 2

Hide all vectors and create a new text box. In this case I typed out the name of our company, "Creative Volition Inc.". The font we chose was "ITC Avant Garde Gothic". Keep your font in full caps, especially if your using this one! Continue to copy/paste your text across the text box.

Step 3

Text settings: 16pt font, Regular, 16pt height spacing, Color #404040.

Step 4

Continue to copy/paste the text until it fills the entire canvas. Stretch the box out using the text tool until it expands beyond the canvas size.

Step 5

Once the text box is filled completely with the copy begin to rotate the box clockwise in about a 45 degree angle.

Step 6

Make one of the smart objects visible. Command/Apple click the preview box on the layer panel to create marching ants around your object.

Step 7

Once the marching ants appear, hide your smart object so you can see the selection.

Step 8

Rasterize the type layer and with the marching ants active on your rasterized layer click Edit > Cut.

Step 9

Then click Edit > Paste and align your new layer so all the words connect. Open the Layer Style box and change the "Color Overlay" to white.

Step 10

Continue to do the same procedure with your other smart object layers but make sure to always cut from the rasterized layer.

Step 11

Lastly create a new layer and fill it with any color. Place this layer on top of all other layers. Drop the fill down to 0%. Open the Layer Styles box and change the inner glow to the following settings and click OK.

Conclusion

Thats it! You should now have a beautiful design in front of you.
