Introducing: Daniele Machado

As we always say, it's a great pleasure for us to introduce new talented artists here for you. We really like to get to know the work of someone that is new to the audience and have the privilege to show it here to you first. And today this is the case... I will present to you the work and a small interview with a new artist that has some pretty nice stuff to show! Daniele Machado was born in 1986 in Sapucaia do Sul, RS, Brazil and today she lives in lives in São Leopoldo, RS, Brazil - a city near our home town Porto Alegre. She is currently studying Communication at Feevale and here she will show us some of her work and a bit more about herself.

I got to know Daniela's work through an email she sent us showing the new design of her website. I visited the site and really liked her pieces and her style, so I got in touch with her and scheduled a coffee for us talk - this is the good stuff about having the artist near us, we get the chance to see them personally, which I think is great. :)

As this was not exactly an interview, it was more like a chat, I will show the topics we talked about and some of her stylish pieces... so take your time and enjoy the article!

The Beginning

From an early age I was not an illustrator or a kid that would draw a lot, but since I was very small I can recall drawing my own clothes, I used to design the things I wanted to wear. I used to draw them and I was always surrounded by small pieces of fabric and clothes drawings. I started to study communication because I had the intention of working with Art Direction, but in the end I started to work with fashion, work with companied that develop the product (clothes). The great thing about this was to be able to work with something that I liked since I was a child. The illustration itself showed up slowly...

I see my illustrations as my way to work with product design.

Inspiration

It's even complicated to talk about inspiration... I'm inspired by so many things that sometimes I can't even mention all of them.
I really like rock and roll. Since I was 15 I always liked a lot of punk rock and that is something that carries a lot of references. So since I started to listen to punk rock this became a great part of my inspiration, not only the music, but all the visual inspiration also became part of my work. From the aesthetics of Ramones and Sex Pistols to the work of Vivienne Westwood, for an example. I remember I got to know the work of Simone Legno - which I really admire - and I loved the amount of punk characters and the way he showed his own style.

I also really like feminine stuff... things that are delicates and cute, the feminine universe. I believe that the delicate side of my work comes from this part of me... we always live between the limit of things, among the clean and the over.

I also like photography and in my spare time I like to do some experiments with it. I simply love black and white photos... I think they capture some really special moments in a very particular way.

Today

Today I work for a street line company during the day and I really like it because is the style I always admired. And during my spare time I have some freelance projects. And the nice thing is that the company that I work for understands and respects the works I do as a freelance. They understand how things works these days and they know me, they know I will take good care of each one of my clients.

University

I really like to be studying communication... I'm not sure about what I will do after graduating, but I know I want to get into a masters degree program, I love to study. I have a quiet and settled personality, so I like to be in quiet studying and doing my things.

I believe that there is nothing that we like and that we want to learn that we can't learn. The difference is the personality and the style of each person. Some people are self educated and can learn everything my themselves, other people need more interaction, need a teacher, a class and some colleagues. And the really good thing about classes is the network you can build inside of a classroom, the talks, the tips, etc.

And the fact is that is doesn't matter the way we learn things, what matters is that we do it with passion, with all our heart and that we keep honest about it.

Future

Since I was around 15 years old I dreamed about having my own brand, a brand where I could do everything the way I wanted to wear, the clothes I always wanted to have. Right now I don't have time for this cause I know a brand demands dedication and really hard work, so at this moment I can only imagine how this would be like... but I do thing about starting as an experiment, with a small amount of pieces just to check out the result of it.

And if I get to start my brand, the idea is to do something small, something faithful to the style I always liked. I really admire individuality and I don't want to forget about that and go 'mass production'.

And when the inspiration is gone?

I listen to music... I'm moved by music.

I love to listen to something I really like and to check out some magazines to see what is happening and what other people are doing... this always works for me.

Tips

Everything we can learn and improve is good for us. Get yourself a network, contact people you admire, show your work. Remembering to use services like Behance to show your work to other people and places, this is a good way to showcase your stuff.

And for those who work with design, product or anything visual, get your own 'reference library' because you will need lots of images.

Things are not easy, so you have to go for it, learn things you are not good at and keep innovating and improving your work.

Craola

Greg Simkins was born in 1975 in Torrance California, just south of Los Angeles. He grew up with a menagerie of animals including a number of rabbits, which often emerge in his paintings. He began drawing at the early age of three and was inspired by various cartoons and books. Some standout books that still find there way into his art are Watership Down by Richard Adams, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

Simkins’ art continued to progress to the age of 18, when he started doing graffiti under the name Craola. Graffiti art became his impetus for creating and gave him the confidence to paint large works. In addition, it taught him perspective, color theory and further developed artistic skills, which later translated into his work with acrylics.

After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from California State University of Long Beach in 1999, Simkins worked as an Illustrator for various clothing companies. He later moved on to Treyarch/Activision where he worked on video games including Tony Hawk 2X, Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman while attempting to paint with every free minute he had.

In 2005, Simkins pursued his desire to paint as a full time artist. Since then, he has been featured in numerous group exhibitions and has successfully sold out four solo exhibitions. His art is seen in a wide variety of industries from clothing to video games and has also come to life in the form of toys. His client/collaboration list includes Disney, Mattel, Upper Playground, Juxtapoz, To Die For, Vans, Converse, AFI, Saosin, Gym Class Heroes, Pennywise, STRANGEco, Ningyoushi, Kid Robot, Zero Friends, Epitaph, Dark Horse, Iron Fist and Pulse International.

Simkins’ artwork currently appears in galleries throughout the country.

ASYLM

Involved in the graffiti movement since 1989, Asylm began his quest to develop a recognizable graff style on the walls of the Los Angeles River. Amazed to see what could be created with simple cans of spray paint, Asylm felt he could contribute a different flavor to the graff scene of Los Angeles. Understanding its essence at an early age, for Asylm graffiti was not only an art form that was economically affordable, but in a sense, an introduction to art. Asylm’s work is generally quite beautiful, combining bright colors with flourishes of metallic and pearlescent silver and gold paint.

His graff and canvas work can often combine realistic depictions of nature such as humming birds or flowers along with wild style depiction of words and letters over an abstract background.

His spirituality trances in his work and depicts that nature and the urban landscape can coexists in harmony.

Os Gemeos

Os Gêmeos (Portuguese for The Twins) are graffiti artist identical twin brothers (born 1974) from São Paulo, Brazil, whose real names are Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo. They started painting graffiti in 1987 and gradually became a main influence in the local scene, helping to define Brazil's own style. Their work often features yellow-skinned characters, but is otherwise diverse and ranges from tags to complicated murals. Subjects range from family portraits to commentary on São Paulo's social and political circumstances, as well as Brazilian folklore. Their graffiti style was influenced by both traditional hip hop style and the Brazilian pixação movement. read more
