Wallpaper of the Week #61 - Gustav Balderdash

August 16, 2009 from abduzeedo's blog

This week we have for the wallpaper of the week an awesome illustration from Gustav Balderdash, an Illustrator, Animator, and Graphic Designer, based in Southampton, England.

Gustav Balderdash is a reclusive old chap who enjoys making things. His personal work is chronicled within an ever-mounting stack of sketchbooks. Hand drawn characters inspired by everyday people surrounded by mixed media worlds fill the pages with varying degrees of simplicity and detail. Gustav is by nature a cynical bastard. He is the embodiment of a dying attitude from a bygone era. Gustav is a veteran of two wars, in both of which he was a successful warrior (A large shout out to everyone who came along and showed their loyalty to the old fart).

Vintage 3D Typography in Photoshop with Repoussé
Sunday is the day to play with Photoshop and try some new ideas. As usual I went through some books and Web sites to find some inspiration. I am still addicted to the Handy Book of Artistic Printing, it's a must have book for some old style print references. I got some ideas and also found this amazing image from Alex Beltechi on Dribbble called Twisting in the Wind. Then I new the effect I wanted to know how to create in Photoshop.

Book Suggestion - Poke the Box
The book of this week is Poke the Box. Written by Seth Godin, Poke the Box is very inspiring and motivating about initiating and shipping. It makes you think about so many things and makes you want to make things happen. If you're stuck at the starting line, you don't need more time or permission. You don’t need to wait for a boss’s okay or to be told to push the button; you just need to poke.
