It's booked! We will be heading down to Singapore for our yearly vacation, nothing cooler than exploring designers, artists, and photographers based in this beautiful country. Let's take a look at the work of Foreign Policy and their Brand Identity for The Clifford Pier. I took this particular project because the design truly reflects the colours from Singapore after watching so many travel videos on the subject. As they quote: "Collaterals with color palette in sea-foam, coral and Caspian blue; classic postage stamps accented with tropical flora and fauna". Sharing an entity with its heritage, The Clifford Pier draws from its legacy as a bustling port in Singapore during the 1930s. Ginger flower motifs pay homage to William Farquhar who was fascinated with local botany during his time on the island. Collaterals with color palette in sea-foam, coral and caspian blue; classic postage stamps accented with tropical flora and fauna, along with architectural elements, are reminiscent of the glorious voyages that set sail from this historical landmark. Ben Ali Souheil shared a beautiful poster design project on his Behance profile. The work was done for the Red Bull Music Academy BASS CAMP, a branded affair that rounds up an ensemble of regional artists over three days of collaborative creativity. Dubai hosted its first BASS CAMP in 2013 at Bastakiya, a traditional backdrop to the urban metropolis. The location celebrated the fusion of medieval and modern, serving as inspiration for this design project. From the logo lock-up in the Kufi style, to rich, colourful patterns with thematic elements, every aspect of the event's identity celebrates music in its kaleidoscopic glory. "This design story came together in what I think was the centerpiece of this project, the limited-edition canvas posters named after the 7th note on the musical scale." These Major 7 posters were intricately woven together in the vibrant thread of a geographically-relevant visual language, capturing the essence of RBMA BASS CAMP. Poster design
Firman Suci Ananda and Zulfan Iskandar are designers from Indonesia and they shared this very inspiring graphics and editorial design post on their Behance profile. It is titled "Typoforma - Issue No.1" and as you can see by its name, the focus is pretty much on typography and composition. You might ask me, this looks like any other editorial post. You are right, however, this post, in particular, illustrates quite well the direction I believe the web is going to. If you pay attention to these pictures you will automatically create some comparisons with the web design work we shared here in the past from Dribbble and other publications. We live in a digital world with everyone glued to their smartphones at every turn but the analog world is still very important, especially when it comes to promoting events and strengthening your brand through carefully crafted printed materials. This could range from the traditional collateral like business cards, letterheads, envelopes to more graphical pieces. A good example is flyers. I am addicted to flyers and even went through a phase of collecting them. Every time I would go to a cool shop I’d undoubtedly spot a handful of flyers promoting events and parties. Flyers are still very important for this type of promotion. In addition, they are super inspiring for people like me to not only spot in the wild but in the art of making them. If you ever have a chance to design a flyer, I highly recommend you to try. There are a few important elements to consider when designing a flyer. From the dimensions and the message you want to communicate to the visual appeal, printing process, paper and other technical aspects. The technical aspects were always a big hurdle for me personally for a couple of reasons. First it was expensive. In order to be affordable we would have to print, at minimum, thousands. Second, the process was slow, analog and not very accurate if you didn’t have a good budget. Nowadays things are much simpler especially with companies like MOO where they offer everything you need to create a beautiful flyer in a very streamlined way. All the hurdles of the past are pretty much gone for me. I have used their service in the past and I am stoked to use it again very soon for an Abduzeedo event I’m looking to promote with flyers. So for this post I wanted to share some flyer design inspiration. These are the flyers I am using for reference for my own project, which I will share a little tutorial very soon. Silvino González Morales shared a quite beautiful post on graphic design featuring a set of abstract illustrations titled Espectros. The idea is simple, it basically blends shapes with a radial gradient. However the composition makes it very unique. As the wise man say, the simple things are always the most difficult to achieve. Silvino proved that to be right. I wouldn't mind having one of those in my house. Each one has its own bias, its own weaknesses. As a designer one of my weak points is simplicity, I tend to have a great difficulty with minimalism (and I love so much minimalism). So I try constantly to challenge myself and improve constantly. Ver Para Oír / Jardín Japonés translated to See To Hear / Japanese Garden and I simply love this project. The mixture of the culture, colours and you just gotta love that font Avant Garde who has been my go-to font for years. Check it out, this project is beautifully shown in execution and presentation. We are taking a look at this very cool visual identity project for Kodak, a place for music. Designed by Estudio Albino and Roberto De Leon who are both from Guadalajara, Mexico. What I love about this project is first of all the tone they used on the use of the logos across the branding, you totally understand the movement generated by music through the distortion. We're totally digging these gorgeous Tarot cards designed for Neustellar, a Swiss organization run by Andreas Graf that provides spiritual teaching, mindfulness workshops and counseling. The creative talent behind the work is the lovely Caterina Bianchini, a multi-award winning designer and art director based in London. Tarot cards may not be the first place you look for drawing inspiration but we hope these have moved you just as much as they have us. These beautiful Tarot cards were designed to promote each of Neustellar's classes ranging from old age and wisdom to crisis intervention. The concept behind creating designs that referenced Tarot cards was that tarot cards are used to indicate the future, give a sense of what might be ahead, to allow for the individual to plan or accept. Specifically, the designs were created to be a graphic interpretation of each class offered. You'll notice tree lifelines symbolizing the old age and wisdom cards while outlines of mountainous shapes convey new perspectives for the healing card. Orlando Arocena is a Mexican-Cuban-American vector artist and creative director based in New Haven, USA. One of his dreams was to collaborate with the Empire Magazine, as he said, it was in his bucket list. Well, we are happy that it's not there anymore because he created a fantastic magazine cover design for the upcoming movie Avengers: Infinity War. The cover features no one else but the super villain THANOS and it also rocks a super colorful, I dare say 80s graphic design look. Below you can learn a bit more about the creative process behind it. For as long as I can remember I always admired Empire Magazine and as a result I included it to my "Bucket List" of Brands I would be honored to collaborate with and have fun. Well, dreams to come true... Magazine Cover Design Process Below is my "Iron Man Equation" from 2013 and the basis that inspired the Creative Director over at Empire Magazine to start a dialogue and get the project rolling in time to announce the evil super villain from the new Avengers: Infinity War movie...THANOS! What the Creative Director appreciated most about the Iron Man equation was the color , the sense of motion and the "Deco-Pop" style I had created for myself over 5 years ago. Since this illustration is intended to be the cover, I removed the text exploration and delivered the first round with an exploration in Thanos' expression and background. and then placed in the Empire branding Round 1 feedback was received, we now had an approved pose. So we quickly went into Round 2- where I delivered a spectrum of options pertaining to lighting, mood and facial expression of Thanos. ( see below) Round 2 feedback received we now were in the home stretch and was given the green light to play with their Branding- which rarely ever happens in this industry. So I respectfully went into round 3. Below is the first evolution for the stylized Empire Branding but I felt it detracted too much from the original and explored a less extreme interpretation but smarter version leveraging the lens flares off the Gauntlet and adding them up top to the letters. I always admire those that challenge themselves to daily activities like taking a photo a day, or design something different every day. It seems simple at first, however, like everything in life, the closest you get to the realization of something, the more difficult things become. I believe it does that to naturally select those that have real passion for the others. For this post I'd love to share the typography work that TJ Nicklin created titled 36 DAYS OF TYPE. The style and quality of the illustrations is just top notch. 36 Days of Type is a project that invites Designers, Illustrators and Graphic Artists to express their particular view on the letters and numbers in the alphabet. We're delighted by the whimsical work of French-born, Berlin-based illustrator Marc Majewski and in particular his recent children's picture book titled Une Histoire. The story is an ode to the imagination and daydreaming and takes the reader on a joyous journey by way of endearing illustrations spotlighting Majewski's passion for color and light. As a child, the talented Majewski discovered his zeal for drawing and painting through the pictures of Gustave Dore, Quentin Blake, Lisbeth Zwerger and Symbolist painters just to name a few. We are so impressed by Majewski's ability to portray real-life scenes with such detail, emotion and sparkle. Angela Fisher shared a beautiful brand identity project that she worked on for the 2018 Adobe Summit which it is a celebration of Experience Makers. The project is simply awesome and we had to feature it here on ABDZ, especially because Angela was kind to post quite a few details about the process. "Maker" by definition is a person who create; form; shape. Based on the theme, the event identity should be equally expressive in both digital and physical form. This year the identity consists of two components: modular block pattern (vector) + physical installation (photographs). You might ask why create a physically installation then photograph it when one can achieve nearly identitical result from digital renderings? A bespoke installation is unique. Through the makers’ hands they’ve each added a layer of depth which is one of a kind, hard to replicate with digital renderings. Much like the range of skills required of modern day Experience Makers, the final artwork is blend of a variety of disciplines: 2D & 3D, digital & physical, software skills & traditional crafts, plus a lot of love. I am a couple hours away to leave for Sweden, by the meantime I wanted to discover some designers from this beautiful country in the eastern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. We are taking a look at the work from Dalston Creative, a design studio located in Stockholm. They have worked at creating the brand identity for NOCK, a new three-floor design from the 19th-century building on Renstiernas Gata on Södermalm. I would love to point out that the architect was done by Jenny Frigren and Interior design by Covet Visual identity for property development NOCK, three new floors on a 19th-century building on Renstiernas Gata on Södermalm in Stockholm. The concept was built around the idea of Scandinavian decadence. Deliverables included naming, identity, catalog, website, photography and art direction.
