Let's start off the week with a beautiful tribute to the Grand Budapest Hotel directed by the mighty Wes Anderson. This tribute has been expressed through the form of illustration and character design by Santiago Moriv who is an illustrator and visual artist from Medellín, Colombia. For those who have watched the movie, Santiago focused on the very key elements of such a successful movie and still very pleasurable to watch after one more than once. This is a project that i have been doing with a lot of patience :D More Links Learn more about Santiago Moriv Illustration & Character Design
It never ceases to amaze me the level of quality that 3D artworks have gotten. Dan N shared this incredible character design project that took him a few months to complete. It is titled "Hulkbuster" and it's the Iron Man Armor: Mark XLIV. It's hard to imagine that we all have access to tools to achieve this level of work and even more mind-blowing to think that you can simply just purchase the model to render it on your machine. If nowadays we can do this, imagine what 10 years from now will look like. Better know as the "Hulkbuster" was a project I started a few months ago. My goals of this project was to see how far I could push shading inside of Redshift, without using any 3rd party applications such as Substance, Mari. ect. Also seeing how much detail I could include without doing any UVs and rely solely on Redshift's Triplanar, Curvature, AO, Color Layer, Blend material, ect. to build detailed enough shaders all inside of Cinema 4D. 3D Character Design Graph for one of the materials, includes procedural grime, dust, and dirt layered in the crevices based off curvature and AO maps. A little breakdown of the procedural setup for the change in reflection color. Also got some requests to share the setup so I made a simplified version of it to download.
We are delighted to share a timely post today by Hungarian-based illustrator Dora Vincze showcasing some fun illustrations celebrating winter sports. Just in time for the Olympics in South Korea, these whimsical, animated character illustrations have us beaming from ear to ear. The Winter Olympics began in 1924 in Chamonix, France as a major international affair and continued to take place every four years. Having evolved since their inception, sports and disciplines have been added and subtracted over time. The sports Vincze features here such as Alpine skiing and snowboarding have earned a permanent spot on the Olympic programme. For this work Vincze has employed Photoshop and After Effects to achieve the cheery end result. We don't have much further detail to wax poetic on this talented young illustrator but you can check her Instagram for more discovery and inspiration.
Fady Youssef is an Egyptian art director based in Dubai. He created this amazing series of character design made out of waste, literally. With old electronic parts he put together some quite inspiring compositions with character full of personality. It definitely reminds me of Wall-e by Pixar. With scores of new smartphones and computers release every quarter, tons of electronic devices are thrown away – and they often wind up filling our landfills and polluting the environment. Electronic waste is a growing concern – over 2.4 million tons of waste was generated by gadgets in 2010 alone. This waste often includes toxic materials such as lead, mercury and lithium to name a few. The concept here is to keep electronic waste out of the environment by making these up-cycled characters using static and rigid shapes of digital components to give a second life to objects that can be transformed to living characters to tell a story even in one shot. The list is infinite. I reuse everything from electronics components that express my fantasy. Character Design from Waste

The Warriors is one of my favorite films, if you have not watch it do yourself a favor and check it out. It's a classic movie from the 80s, simple plot of a gang trying to go back to their territory but in order to do so they have to cross NYC taking subway, running on the streets and of course fighting other gangs. The style of the movie, with the radio host updating people about the Warriors moves, outfits, mood, everything is inspiring and Diogo Torres translate that amazingly well into a beautiful illustration piece. The project title The Warriors Characters is an illustration as the titles says of the most iconic characters in the movie. Check it out. A turf battle between New York City street gangs that rages from Coney Island to the Bronx. The Warriors are mistakenly fingered for the killing of a gang leader. Soon they have every gang in the city out to get revenge and they must make their way across the city to their own turf. Illustration and character design Diogo Torres is a Brazilian illustrator and graphic designer based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. First of all, we would like to wish Happy Thanksgiving to everyone that does celebrate today and will do for the next few days. Through all the eating sessions and resting between, we would like to share this stunning short film on Abduzeedo. The movie is called: Planet Unknown and it’s the story of a journey with as they called: Space Rovers were sent out to find potentially habitable planets. We just can’t deny that we love the approach of this film and how it just remind us of the movie Wall-E. Hope you will enjoy! Watch Now The idea started back in 2014 when Interstellar was released. I was deeply impressed by the movie and was inspired by the two robots TARS and CASE. The idea of intellectual robots exploring space developed from there. Other inspirations include Pixar movies like WALL-E and Toy Story, as well as CHAPPiE, NASA documentaries about Mars Rover Curiosity, and short films by individuals like Alex Roman’s The Third & The Seventh, Richard Mans’ Abiogenesis, Erik Wernquist’s Wanderers, Alf Lovvold’s Dawn of the Stuff, and so many more. One of the games I have been playing a lot lately is the new Batman game, the Arkham Knight. Batman is my favorite character and the main reason it's because he's a regular guy, he doesn't have special powers, just brains and of course money. So for this post I had to share the beautiful character design that Riyahd Cassiem shared on his Behance page. For more information about Riyahd check out his page at http://riyahdart.blogspot.com/
Character design is a field that I don't know much about and definitely lack talent but that doesn't mean that I don't like it. On the contrary, I love seeing the work that talented designers and artists put together. From Pixar movies to simple illustrations, what really catches my attention is the expression that these talented people are able to add to their characters, it's almost as if they were alive. For this post we share a really cool project by Oscar Ramos, an illustrator and character designer from Santiago, Chile. The project is titled Opel - "Because you never travel alone". It's always great to see designers rockin' some super badasses characters. Imagination has no boundaries and we get to see infinite designs, thankfully! Today we're checking the characters imagined by German designer Joern Zimmermann. He's been doing some super awesome, slick pieces, from mecha warriors and battle suits to aliens. These are pretty amazing, but are only a handful! For more of his artworks, please visit his portfolio at ArtStation. He'll most definitely enjoy your attention! I hope you like these as much as I did! Cheers! ;)
Vivien Bertin, an illustrator from Paris, France shared some beautiful character design work on his Behance page. If there's an area that I really admire yet completely lack skill is character design however I love seeing the process from conception, sketches to the final outcome. The work that Vivien shared is amazing especially in the colors and details not to mention, it's a personal project and we here at Abduzeedo have a special place in our hearts for personal projects. Advertising is all about communication but to achieve that much work is required from a copious array of fields, from basic communication to design, illustration to 3D, and many others. The photo manipulation is the element that always attracted me, especially in terms of giving life to objects and characters that are not real. That's the case of the work that Estudio Icone created for CCCA Kids to help Brazilians learn english. Simple, illustrative, smart and of course top notch in the details and polish. Icone is a studio formed by creative minds: multidisciplinary professionals that carry art in their DNA. Essentially, our job is to produce images. But we want more than that. We seek spontaneous creativity which has no formulas and arises from the talent of each artist, from their visual culture and plurality of backgrounds. Here, each image can present a different solution. But the common goal is to achieve the result that our clients expect. That’s why we’ve completed eight years of partnerships with great brands and advertising agencies by building challenging images with the highest level of technique and refinement. It's great to see artists doing great pieces of art. It might be a fan art to famous characters or shows or even new, fresh characters out of their minds, but what really matters is that we get to see their talent in these fantastic pieces.
