10 trends that will define logo design in 2008 by LogoOrange.com

February 27, 2008

Please visit logoorange.com for the full article. The last article I wrote about logo design was about logo trends from past years. But now, 2008 logo design is getting some cool trends already.

It's important to be at the center of all design trends, because most of clients want to be at the hype. And the hype for trends right now are pretty cool. Some have been out there for some time now, and others are somewhat new. Check it out.

Update: The source link is at the bottom of this post. I found it on LogoOrange, during research for a logo i'm developing, and thought it would be nice to share with you. Every single time we post other people's work, we link them. Always.

Organic 3D

Waves - The New Swooshes

"Web 2.0" Logos

Transparency in logo design

"Underground" Typography - Minimal Fonts

At the source site (LogoOrange), you'll find further explanation about these and other trends, such as 'New Rainbow / Color Scale', 'Sci-Fi Fonts', 'Leaves Logos', 'The "Ugly" 80's' and 'The New Crest'.

I have noticed more use of text instead of pure design in logos these days. Maybe this can't be the trend but generally its a good practice.

Syntetic world, its horrible, that design solution is just plastic today. But its so hard to do something really alife and effective when you have just minutes for new design solution. :( so trends rules...

sorry for my english...:)

I don't really have any graphic design experience (although I do own a copy of Photoshop, which probably makes me as qualified as many new designers), just somebody with an opinion on what he likes the look of and at best, a potential customer of the companies who adopt these and simliar logos.
I am of the firm opinion that chasing trends is extremely short sighted. While it might work for particular products that are regulary upgraded, I would question the merit of adopting a corporate logo heavily influenced by the latest Photoshop gimick. Give me simple, give me memorable, give me timeless, give me good design.

Anonymous03/10/2008

In my opinion these are all very dated. There is nothing to them other than sitting all cozy in a

somewhere. It's turned into simple generic billboard advertising. No originality, just curves and glass.
Like 5-10 years ago when all the kids where having fun making grungy imagery. Now its cute and shiny. Im suprised I didn't see any circular rings, clouds or 45-degree arrows pointing off the image.

It seems that there's a trend to find logo design trends for every year. Usually it was a prerogative of LogoLounge:
logolounge.com/articles/default.asp?ArticleID=540
I hope they wouldn't miss this year; It would be interesting to compare two points of view.

Todd S03/04/2008

Ron, what I mean by TIMELESS was not that it (logo) would live for eternity. Clearly that doesn't happen. What I meant was that it shouldn't be dated or date itself by a fucking style, trend Photoshop effect, etc...

I'll leave clients who want those identities for flash monkies. Tools should never define the work. And clearly this list is a complete showcase of the latest filters and Illustrator effects.

Cheers,
Todd

Great Article on logo trends...

Sarah03/03/2008

Great article for logo designing. I think this will help all the designers to analyze a latest trends in logo designing for their new projects.

ron03/02/2008

so many morons commenting... before you idiots open your mouth about "timeless" logos, open your eyes. there are maybe a handful of companies that have never updated their logos - ill leave the task of finding them up to you geniuses since you know so much about it and have created them.

take apple for instance. they continue to repeat the apple icon shape but keep changing how its rendered and have also changed the logotype as well to keep up with the times. even the best company logo designer of all time, paul rand, has had his originals altered so they look more modern.

and those complaining about plagiarism, look up the definition first and then take a refresher course on how blogs work.

Anonymous03/02/2008

Yes, it is a copy cat...More to the point, you got the content from somewhere else and are getting the credit for it. Not illegal, but not cool...

WOW Really very Nice article, some great examples and trends.

Jason Kuhrt03/02/2008

Abduzeedo your representation of design's role in creating an identity for a company would make most designer's worth their salt cringe. It is embarrassing to read:

"It's important to be at the center of all design trends, because most of clients want to be at the hype. And the hype for trends right now are pretty cool."

Are you joking? This represents a breed of designer's that miss the point of Communication Design. Go watch designer's at TED.com to see some people that understand design. A designer that uses trends as his guiding principal to design a logo for a company, just so that the "client can be happy" should retire. A real designer will give the client the best solution he can, and explain why it is. If the client and the designer disagree then the designer failed to educate the client, or made a poor choice to take on that client.

Make no mistake, of course there are bad designers out there. But it never ceases to embarrass me when I encounter them, or especially those that support it. If anyone here actually gives half a shit about real design go look at William McDonough, Christoph Alexander, Stefan Sagemeister, Ross Lovegrove, Philippe Starck, for starters. I'm sorry I don't have a rolodex of the great Logo Designers of the 20th century.

At least this brought to my attention logoorange.com which is a far superior resource than this ripped one.

I totally dig the 2.0 style logos right now. The question is will we all look at them and gag 5 years from now?

That xerox one is horrible indeed, x-men or xbox.

NoWay03/02/2008

ALL THESE LOGOS ARE SHIT! ANYONE WHO LIKES THEM, PLEASE GO SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE SKULL RIGHT NOW!

Anonymous03/02/2008

Patrick B. said..."Look - logos and identities are changed like every five to ten years - so no sign of "Timeless""

I guess the big, timeless, "successful" companies like 3M, General Mills, GE, IBM, etc. haven't gotten the word yet. As pointed out by others, the screen is only one of the places/ways a logo needs to work. 99% of the ones represented above just don't work.

Matt03/02/2008

If your clients don't care about branding having a trendy logo that dates quickly is always a smart move because next year you'll get to redesign that dated looking logo.

Anonymous03/02/2008

I am not so sure about these logos. I think they won't hold up to time.

Mark03/02/2008

It's my understanding that much of what's written here is plagarized from Logolounge: http://www.logolounge.com/articles/default.asp?ArticleID=540

Wellcome to Web 3.0

robert03/01/2008

I belive that the transparency in logo designs will increase this year extremly

PENIX03/01/2008

There is one single unifying trend between all these logos you didn't point out: Ugly.

I like that stupid coffee cup icon at the bottom of the page better than any of the logos.

Rich Boakes03/01/2008

Ok, this is no copycat post of another comment. The source link is at the top of this page. I found it on abduzeedo, during research for a comment I'm developing, and thought it would be nice to share with you. Every single time I plagiarise other people's work, I link them. Always. ;-)

...great content though - well done logoorange, and thanks for the link.

mobile2fun.com03/01/2008

Really very Nice article, some great examples and trends.

Raymond03/01/2008

Using "hype" and "trend" and "edgy" in logo design does not hit the brand. What looks "new" to a viewers eye on one day is old the next day. These "new" logos do not embed deeply into the collective unconsciousness. They go into one eye and out the other. Just like todays pop music... :*)

J03/01/2008

The new Xerox logo is garbage.

Lone03/01/2008

Agreed with Todd S at the bottom. If your not the originator of the trend and know so much of this is going to be stale tomorrow, why do your clients identity the disservice? Explain to them in simple terms why it is in fact bad to follow the hype with something as important as the center point to their brand. Hype dies the quickest of deaths and trends fail shortly after, shunned until being resurrected an unforeseeable time later. Can your clients company last long enough to be 'hip' again? Avoid succumbing to whats popular at the minute, dump the trends and do good design that will last.

Quit Reposting03/01/2008

You absolutely plagiarized the post from logoorange.com. So what if you linked at the bottom? It is a cheap repost of someone else's work. Why not just simply share the link in a small post instead of reposting logoorange.com's hard work.

Anonymous03/01/2008

"It's important to be at the center of all design trends, because most of clients want to be at the hype. And the hype for trends right now are pretty cool. Some have been out there for some time now, and others are somewhat new. Check it out."

Please explain the reason you used the word Hype like you did.. because unless I missed out on a slang meeting, your use of the word makes absolutely no sense.

danny03/01/2008

He didn't copy the entire post, just the images... the original is really good.... longer though.

Thanks for sharing

DD03/01/2008

I'm with the first comment. I don't get it. why copy original content when you can just add a link? why does digg take us here and not the original link. stupid. it is lame and stupid and lame. are you collecting advertising dollars or just pulling wang

Anonymous03/01/2008

Nice coffee cup.

Anonymous03/01/2008

Copying an entire post but adding a "source" link at the end is still copying an entire post... hate to break it to you. The Internet already has a mechanism to share interesting things you find, it's called a link.

Why not just link to the original post w/ some descriptive text if you want to share it as opposed to copying the whole damn thing?

Internet Television03/01/2008

Web 2.0 is getting too over-used, so much so that the new big thing will be vectors and grid/wave type patterns. Silverlight's logo looks really good actually.

Steve Tolley03/01/2008

If you look closely 'Sean Hinton' then you will see that this has not been plagiarised as this seems to have been posted 2 days before the one on the 'logoorange' website, proves you should actually read the details before criticizing....

=D

PauloGabriel03/01/2008

Sean Hinton,
There's a source link in cause you didn't notice.

Leo B03/01/2008

Very well made. Keep up the good work.

Sean Hinton03/01/2008

This is so totally copied from logorange.
I saw a link to it on smashing a few days ago.
F*** you, Abduzeedo in not coming back. Plagiarist.

http://www.logoorange.com/logo-design-08.php

ppedersen03/01/2008

Classic! I will forward this to others. I started noticing some of these trends myself and you have done a good job in categorizing them. Thanks.

Davey Boyd03/01/2008

I hope the web2.0 logos don't die out yet, they look very cool. Besides that keep the ugly 80's back in the 80's....all that pink, hard edges is not pretty.

Digital Revolutions03/01/2008

Nice article, some great examples and trends.

The Ad Mad02/29/2008

Those transparent and organic ones will sure give some headaches if you try to print them in certain meddiums.

Oh, and logo change for Xerox was horrible, the other one was timeless...this is just fashionable right now (or as long as X-men movies are remembered :P)

Dprite02/28/2008

That "css based" logo is nothing but a Photoshop custom shape...

Nigel02/28/2008

I think logo designs that use transparency are fine for use on websites and possibly 4 color printing, but they will not reproduce in other mediums; screen printing, embossing, signage, yellow pages, faxing, etc. They would need to have solid color versions for other media (for example, the Apple logo), but the Silver Light logo above would be impossible to reproduce using a solid color.

Marko Novak02/28/2008

I like those rainbow logos. You can mix them with transparency logos and you can get really great results.

Jermayn Parker02/28/2008

Will we ever see the 'web 2.0' die out???

Seems that the leafs/ organic plant form is always a popular choice. Will we ever see the 'web 2.0' die out???

Endrigo02/27/2008

Muito tri.

Patrick B. [ @ Todd ]02/27/2008

Not in a too good mood today, hu?

Look - logos and identities are changed like every five to ten years - so no sign of "Timeless".

Todd S02/27/2008

This is a terrible list! First of all identities are supposed to be TIMELESS! Not a fashion trend like interior design or the new jean/denim treatment. Second, some of these so-called trends (Leaves, transparencies, organic line art and rainbows) have been metaphors for many years. See BP and Technicolor and others I hope to never see again. Those crests have been done for far too long by the folks at North Kingdom.

Some really beautiful new identity systems like Cisco (not so new but an amazing system by Jerry Kuyper) and Dubai International Airport hint at some of these dimensional trends but in a far more sophisticated manner.

If you really want to push your viewers thoughts and horizons on identity systems and design please knock it out with the underground music stuff. Look at what motion design firms are doing with animated systems. Places like Prologue, Digital Kitchen, Psyop and Imaginary Forces are truly doing some ground breaking work. I think the web 2.0 stuff is probably the best main stream stuff coming from non major design firms. Probably, because they are keeping it simple and not trying to do too much.

Cheers,
Todd
