2008 Most Beautiful HDR Images

December 16, 2008

2008 was a great year for HDR. Hundreds of blogs were posting about the new and awesome way of photographing. So did abduzeedo, we wrote lots of articles which were visited more than 2 million times. Enjoy our list of the most beautiful and most interesting HDR Images of this year.

In this year the HDR-photomapping became really huge. Why? Because its very easy to create and very powerfull. The images look incredible proffesional. For those who don't know what HDR is, I try to explain: What is HDR? HDR is the short form of High Dynamic Range, a technic that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of an image, like on the example:

2008 Most Beautiful HDR Images

Usually you take 3 shots of the same subject with different exposures. The image in the middle is presented as the normal image. The image on the left has a lower exposure value what makes it more darker and shows very light details like clouds. The image on the right has a higher exposure value than the original to point out details of darker areas. What now happens, is that all of the three shots are going to be merged together in one singel image. There are several great tutorials on the web, also on Abduzeedo, with detailed explanations. For example: How to create HDR Photos I know that you guys have made hundreds of good HDR's. So just leave a comment with a list of YOUR favourite images and post it. Here is a "Best Of"-Compilation of the most beautiful High Dynamic Range Images of the year 2008. Enjoy.

There are some real great shots here, some of them old favourites.
Good collection, be sure to check out some of mine -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/30840425@N03/sets/72157607530850918/

really nice! great job colecting those pics

Some truly artistic images. Thank you for the round up :-)

The photo of the Subaru is one of my favs since quite some time. However, it can't be regarded as a true HDR since it's based on a single shot.

Would be interesting as well to see some nice examples of HDR images that haven't been pushed that far in the settings and are less surreal. (Maybe a part 2.. hint hint... ;-)

As amazing as some of these images above are, I think that they more can be considered art and less "professional". (Hmmm... did that make any sense what I just wrote?)
I'm not saying that the images are not professional but it would be great to see some actual applications of HDR images.

i realy like hdri, but just in 3d applications.

You forgot so many. Oo

riizen12/16/2008

They are nice although dont like the way they look so fake.

These are beautiful images. The light and dark contrasts work really well and these are some good examples. I have way too many backgrounds to use now, I would be changing them everyday. Thanks for posting.

i like hdr in general, but most of these images are way too oversaturated imho. some of them can't even be done out of 3 images due to the motion that happens in the image, so I cannot agree completely about 'them being the best hdr images in 2008'.
I know you can create 'hdr'like tonemapped from raw images but it wont be the same as 3 differently exposed photos..

what do people like so much about the screaming colors? many of these images could be so much nicer with more subtle tones..

just my 2cent.

How is it possible to make HDR image from picture that has been taken in motion?

David Bean12/16/2008

wow! these are truly horrible, ugly images. some aren't even HDR but photoshop plug-ins.

you can't do an HDR of a moving image like the car and it's near impossible with a person. these are more than likely really bad Photomatix plug-in jobs.

These are terrible photos made ever worse by a horrible effect.

CornéM12/16/2008

Well I think there is a very thin line between nice and realistic HDR photos and those where the effect has just been overdone.

I mean, there are a number of photos which just don't look realistic any more.

My favorite has to be that car one.

Shit, a lot of ritch colours, i need to get into HDR soon, it is awesome

"Hundreds of blogs were posting about the new and awesome way of photographing"

HDR is not new, it has been around for a long time, it's only been hyped by all blogs last year.

EL*REF12/16/2008

I like the technique very much but to many HDR images are overdone. Would be cool when you apply HDR technique in film.

Nolan12/16/2008

If you need to take 3 different exposures of the same picture, how can you create an HDR picture of something that's moving? For example, the picture of the Subaru WRX? I've always wondered this.

blacker design12/16/2008

Nolan, to awsner your question you can also create HDR look alikes, from a singel RAW file and change the exposure with that, that will also render some detail, or you can craete HDR from a single RAW file or from a JPG.

Honestly i think HDR looks its best when there is just a slight hiny of HDR, not the full blown out HDR that i see a lot, but some of these images are interesting beyond hte HDR point of view, thanks for sharing

Best is a relative term to be sure. Some of the examples here look too cartoonish for my taste. Certainly some good images in the bunch though, and a good traffic builder for you. :)

VertigoSFX12/16/2008

You know its bad when photos today look better than the real-life counterparts haha. These looks great, I really love that car one, and the one of the city at nighttime...very cool.

Jessy12/16/2008

I think the people that say this is ugly need to see it for what it is...art. I don't think this will ever take the place of everyday photography but it does have its place as a new way of expression. I just bought myself the D90 last night and can't WAIT to get out there and test my skills at the triple exposure type of HDR and not just the single shot stuff I taught myself on Photoshop and Photomatix last night. I'll probably post up my shots in my blog when I get them done...so if there is going to be a part 2 :) feel free to browse over there to grab mine if they could ever rate up with the "best of"

Some wonderfull pictures! I always thought they were drawings! :D

They are super, wonderful.I wasn't saying anything:))

These photos are beginning to look like paintings from classic artists. To me this clearly crosses the line of photography. it is an emulation of classic painters, rather than a creative process. The beautiful German word Kitsch would fit here.

Joeruckus04/24/2009

Is that PETERBOROUGH cathedral up there? You know, I think it is. Exterior and Interior shots. Good work! Up The Posh! Lovely lovely.

Binil Mathew09/04/2009

Awesome technique. It is more artistic than realistic. Its better that way. Makes everyday objects look surreal.

Outstanding!!! Never seen before…. I loved visiting this Blog as everytime I visit I’ll get something out of you guys…
