Amazing Drawings from Cataclysm-X
Nicolien Beerens, aka Cataclysm-X on deviantART, is a 21 years old self-taught artist from Netherlands. She likes all sort of arts: traditional art, digital art, poetry and writing! I found Nicolien's work at deviantART (while searching for some House Md. artworks) and loved it. Her drawings are amazing... full of details, personality, beautiful lines and realism. I liked them so much that I got in touch with Nicolien to know more about her and her work. So here is a small bio and some images for you guys.
My name is Nicolien, a self-taught artist who was born in 1987 and raised in the Netherlands. Ever since I was young I like to create things. Although I've tried several styles of art, portraits have always been my favorite subjects to draw. Lately I absolutely love to portray the human face and forms with pencils only and capture that person's spirit on paper. It's amazing how much you can learn about someone by drawing and observing their facial features.
In 2004 I joined DeviantArt where I learned -and still learn- a lot of new techniques to improve my pencil skills. The more experienced I became, the more techniques I developed myself. People got really interested in how I drew certain features of the human face, and so I started to write tutorials about how to draw and help anyone out who likes to get some help with drawing.
One thing I've learned through the years is that you can achieve anything if you truly believe in yourself and enjoy doing the things that you love to do without hurting anyone else. (: I am grateful for being able to make people smile by showing the things I create.

Pretty good for an amateur. Her proportions are a little off, especially with the space between the eyes and ratio of head to facial mass. She has the potential to be a tremendous artist if she takes a few life drawing classes before she makes these mistakes habitual.

These are lovely pictures, yes, but they lack originality. They look like mimics of photographs. There is a huge difference in quality between the "real life" drawings, and the animated/cgi drawings.
You show talent in copying, not artistic talent. Create your own drawings of your own characters or whatever you choose. Or at the very least show us your INTERPRETATION of these photographs, not a piece-by-piece copy.
Please give credit to real artists who actually create.
No offence but those are just copy paste drawings.... i have the bulk of the real pictures and they look like they have just been edited into pencil scetch....
She shows remarkable patience.. these types of drawings take time. That discipline - combined with desire - will likely produce impressive art, but for the sake of her future in art, let's hope she moves beyond the anime and the hollywood idol worship as soon as possible.
The sensibility seems one of a 14 year old Asian with a love for Manga and an over-reliance on photographs. How original.

Wow, these drawings are really great. They are so realistic and I love the Final Fantasy drawings.
A throwback to the ancient times when there was no camera.
But we have to admit that this artist is hugely talented and inspiring.
Her depiction of hair takes my breath away.
It is better than a photo because we look at the faces wonder-struck, realizing it is the handiwork of a very discerning and caring person. Photography is looking at things differently. Drawing is looking into them deeply. Thanks for the revelation.
