29 Amazing Long Exposure Pictures

Long exposure is one of the techniques that I find the most amazing. The way that the camera captures those few seconds and you're able to see it, is really amazing. Pictures like that got a special feeling, somewhat magical.

When an image is taken including stationary and moving subjects (for example, a fixed street and moving cars or a camera within a car showing a fixed dash-board and moving scenery) using a slow shutter speed, interesting effects, such as light trails occur.

Long exposures are easiest to accomplish in low-light conditions, but can be done in brighter light using neutral density filters or specially designed cameras. We'd love to see your pictures! Post them in a commentary! And don't forget to visit these photographer's photostreams! Cheers! ;)

I just took some of these of firewoks! I love the effect, I think if someone who comes up with a way to take normal light and make it do that in Ps, or just add car-light-streaks to a normal shot of a city will be brilliant...

I've always loved this style of photography, but when I try it with digital I always end up with too much noise to make a decent image.

Love the pics, but..... I have to ask, how much Photoshopping was done to the images? I have been experimenting with long exposure photography and have great difficulty believing that all the images were unedited.

Don't get me wrong, I love the images but once the images are edited it is art and not photography.

Anonymous06/05/2009

Definitely some good pics here. The ones kissing I like.

pertti pasanen06/05/2009

Some of them look HDR to me, insane if they ain't -- any way, amazing.

Some fabulous images, however achieved. The added value is the apt naming of some of them - well done - it adds to their impact. Thank you for sharing - they make a moment special - for a long time.

The Baldchemist08/16/2009

Digital photography has taken authenticity and truth from the art with the use of Photoshop. (That's not to say that we don't use it, because we do with great effect.)

Its not just about long exposure but composition and some elements of reality also. Most of these pictures have been made before.
Its now getting increasingly difficult to create with any form of originality ( if it was ever easy).

Its not really difficult to put your camera on a tripod close the aperture down to f30 and expose for 30 seconds, a minute or whatever time you like with an ISO of 100 and get a "nice result".

But a very nice collection and good luck to all who take this very fine art seriously.

The Baldchemist08/16/2009

Ps Just as a little post script, we doubt if any of them are high dynamic range shots as our friend higher up the list thought.Ds
