45 Amazing Type Faces - Typographic Portraits

March 31, 2009

Typography is not just about choosing a nice typeface, actually it's much more than that, it's how we arrange the types in the layout choosing the right size, weight and type of font to transmit the message in the easiest and more understandable way. Now, imagine some designers take that to a next step, mixing typography with portraits.

That's exactly what we want to feature on this article, some incredible typographic portraits, the literal meaning for typefaces.

I´ve seen several kind of posts in this site, but this post is a better then all... maybe because I´m looking fot typography and all rellationship. It´s great!

Gaurav Chandrasen Kale03/31/2009

Amazing Collection, do you have any tutorials

gary03/31/2009

Neat collection. I've seen many of these lately, they've grown in popularity-latest trend. Most popular one is Grammys.

marcosrf7403/31/2009

Great! I love the creative use of typography.

Anonymous03/31/2009

Hardly original. This kind of stuff has been done thousands of times and its pretty much what everyone does to express type in their first type class in design school...i woudnt consider pushing it to the next level...

Scott S.03/31/2009

This is a great collection. How inspiring. I'm a wanna-be designer, too, and I've been doing it professionally for 6 years. =P

Chuss.

Fred03/31/2009

Wow, so nice!

@ez-roller
I agree, a tutorial will help a lot!

Mark Gosingtian03/31/2009

Rubber Stamps03/31/2009

Pretty cool use of typography!

Raphael03/31/2009

This was a powerfull trend some time ago.
I wonder who started this trend...

Anyway, still impressive!
There is a another trend with this kind of art that does vehicles and objects.

Sanid03/31/2009

Hi people , thanks for the comments there is a short video showing you a technique to do this , but if so many of you want to have a tutorial i will try to make one or ask some of this awesome artists to share with us some of their knowledge bye

Very nice and thorough article.
The Steve Jobs portrait was done by a student at Full Sail and I got to meet him and talk to him about the piece. Very nice work.
These portraits are easy to do, but tedious.
All you do is create individual paths in illustrator for every line of text. The tedious part is that you have to do this thousands of times.

Shane03/31/2009

Awesome post! Type portraiture is awesome.

My wife did a great type portrait of John Malkovich in one of her classes.

I love the Miyavi one, mostly because Miyavi is just plain amazing even without being made into typography!!! (Third before last) That surprised me! :D And I love the first one, too. Quite lovely

SLIM04/10/2009

BABYGRL WHOA!!THIS IS F'KING ILL !

Muoi04/10/2009

Very nice! How can I get my typeface?

Creative Opera04/10/2009

These are simply amazing! Thanks so much for collecting them for our viewing pleasure!

For those of you looking for tutorials, it looks like most of these were created in Illustrator with the Envelope Distort Make with Warp tools. Others look like they were created just by changing the color of the type - probably in Photoshop.

No matter how they were created, I'm sure there isn't an easy step-by-step for any of them. They all required solid planning, exquisite attention to detail, and loads of time!

Great post, Sanid!

Sanid04/10/2009

People, note this : Its not MY work

Upolovnikov Maksim04/13/2009

This is great! Is there a simple way to repeat it?

Stephen Tiano04/19/2009

These are tremendous! I think I'd love having one of myself for my blog.

Nikki at PlasticPrinters04/20/2009

WOW! Very Very Cool!! Who knew that could be done =D Awsome work!

dphillips04/23/2009

I had to do a project similar to this but we used animals instead. We also could only use the letters in the animal's name but we could choose any mammal and any font. We also couldn't use really tiny letters to fill up the space etc. because our teacher wanted to be able to see the letters themselves. Here's mine:

Anonymous04/26/2009

Im just wondering how many hours did you spend in doing one of those pictures, is it by hand or your using a software that generates into typographic portrait?....
Can i send my pictures and make it like that? hahaha...but anyways, whoever made these typographic portraits, you have a talent and you rock!!!=)
