Abducted by Web Technologies
Hello everyone, my name is Carlos Taborda, I’m an engineer/developer/designer and I’ve been abducted. :) I’m a friend of Fabio, and we thought bringing a little bit of programming/server articles would be helpful to all of you designers who want to learn to install and configure your servers (& VPS) and need to get your sites, blogs and applications up and running.

What Subjects will you talk about?
Since I have a mixed background, I will try to bring a little bit of everything from the three subjects (Servers, Code & Design). Here’s a list of things I’ve thought about.
Servers: We’ll talk about, Getting a server up and running to serve sites and applications, ie, Apache, PHP, MySQL, Zend, Ruby on Rails, Django and Security.
Code: I’m a Rails developer, and use it for my work every day, so i’ll be posting some basic Howto’s on how to get your first application going, as well as useful resources I find.
Design: I’m not as a gifted designer as Fabio, but I have a good sense of design in applications, so i’ll share some Howto’s on how to create good ‘web-app’ templates, with CSS, Ajax, etc. I’ll also feature good Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla templates I run into.
We need ideas!
I would like to get ideas from you - our readers! What topics should we add, that would be useful for you in your web-design/developing journey.

Everyone! I hope to get some comments, this is my 1st post, and i'm really looking forward to what you guys have in mind.
Thanks!
This sounds intriguing. I just started coding in Rails and I would love to see some tutorials on how to set up the environment properly.
I just signed up with dreamhost and am looking forward to setting up my own cms. I'm thinking about wordpress... but do you have any recommendations? I am pro markup validation and usability. thanks!
How about a beginner's guide to CSS or Ajax?
That would be awesome for some of us who dream of having a site like this one but currently don't know much about programming.

Great stuff man,
I love to design and work on photoshop, but I really don't know anything on css and so on, I think would be good to teach and go over the things that would be needed to became a real independent designer in terms of being able to do a whole website by yourself.
I also think would be really good to work on some blogging stuff because it's out there and everybody is using platforms like wordpress to release your own portfolio or your own little website about something so would be interesting to see some of that too.
Good luck on your posts, Hope to see something pretty soon and learn a lot from it..
I think i would be really useful if you could post an article into how to connect to a server using ssh and how to install apps that way.
Thanks
I think some posts about the different CMS(Joomla,Wordpress, etc) would be great for many...
...and beginner guides into CSS&AJAX&so on...
and you could show the do's & don'ts in webdesign.
I've seen too many terrible sites.
I would like to see some tutorials explain about Wordpress customization, not really about how to customize wordpress but how to build a website using wordpress like a cams in diferent ways using wordpress not as a blog sistem but like a website cms, how to customize the code and the way of display the information etc. It would be cool and I've never seen something explain this with details. Css tips, xhtml and ajax also. Good Luck!
I am super excited by this. Servers have always been a crux for me and lately RoR has really intrigued me, but there is quite a learning curve from what I'm used to.
Hey, Carlos! Welcome to the team! I'm REALLY looking forward to your tuts!! Cheers! ;D
Right now I really love Abduzeedo the way it is, beacuse its like my food. I enter here every day and its always awesome. I know its hard to keep the "awesomeness", but try to do it. One of the most interesting things here are the "Daily Inspirations", "Best of..." and the "Interviews" because they keep me updated, and I really like that.
The Tutorials were the best of this site, but the last ones from the readers didnt help so much (although I appreciate the effort). I would like you to get back to the quality, creativity and really cool explanations of Fabio tutorials like "Hell of Tutorial", "Eclipse Effect" and the "Wave Explosion" just to name a few. Maybe you should give us less tuts, but better.
And It would be so cool to see some WebDesign tips ---> It would be great to see a "Begginers" section (for dudes like me) and an "Advance" one, with CSS, PHP, HTML, and so on.
The photography tips are really cool here too... keep it up!
I would like to learn how to set up my own server at home so I do not have to rent shared sever space. May be using a mac mini. How do you configure your own ISP and mail address.
Thanks,
Ed
How about flash or something along those lines? To create movies etc? Just a though!

Good effort as this will add a different audience demographic to the site.
However with so many websites that has many similar articles, i think it will be tricky to come up with good articles.
Please post lots about Ruby on Rails.
I cant understand it! I don't know how to use this code. :=)
I'd love to see an article on how you would set up a VM guest, have it operate as your server and then how to interact with it through the host. Or maybe from a networked computer. Simply very basic tuts on how to get putty to interact with something you can directly control. This would be a great way of learning how to manage your VPS and you won't have to go through the cost!
I hope I'm making sense.
