PRINT INFO: Above first painted these UNION JACK Arrows in LONDON during his “2005 EUROPEAN TOUR” where he painted and installed his signature Arrow’s in 14-countries. We think this prints image and reflection transforms the already good looking UNION JACK motif transform into something mesmerizing. The directional symmetry of the arrows going up and down are a great balance with sharp colors to draw you in even closer. Above spent a lot of time making sure each print was “perfect” and we all agree that this is his best screen print has pulled thus far. We hope you enjoy this print as much as we do. We thank you in advance for your support.

As a Brit I love it (esp the blue one)! Do you think we could use it as the 2012 olympics logo - it's much better than the official one! The reflection effect is great. hmm, an improvement - hard, but perhaps a slightly darker grey on the background.

And the green version looks to have a slight 'basque flag' vibe about it, perhaps the next version! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Basque_Country.svg

Like: The rustic, urban style with balance of opposites and reflection. feels very comfortable warm.

Dislike: i feel the yellow outlining is let down by choice of colour. The yellow works with the blue version but i feel it isn't strong enough to mix with the green. maybe a burnt orange colour would work better.

over all a great job and i find it quite intriguing.

cheers

I really like the "retro" style the poster has with these 2 standards colors and a yellow glow arround. this is cool because everything else is like grey, without life... It's really urban and that sweet. I can see that the theme is mostly something up and down like probably the majority of the people in life. I will have to read about the subject to really know what the print want to say.

bliss04/23/2009

I loved the reflection and the grunge style.
Didn't liked so much of the background colors.

zimzallabimdesign04/23/2009

I find it quite an ironic image given the current situation of the United Kingdom. The clear arrows on the top suggest
that the United Kingdom is on the up when were really fucked at the moment and the reality is that we are heading in a nose dive.

I personally would change the image so that the arrows on the top half would be pointing down, with the bottom half arrows pointing upwards in the reflection in the water. This would better convey the current status we're in: The United Kingdom in reality is in decline, whilst we are being fed by the illusion (illustrated by the reflection) that things are getting better.

p.s.: I found an arrow in Vilnius in Lithuania, not entirely sure if it was your work otherwise it was a very good copy-cat. Nevertheless it was blown from the wire it was suspended from during a blizzard whilst I was there. I promptly snapped it up. Best souvenir I could have hoped for!

Keep up the good work!

I like the junkie/grungy style and the simplicity of it.
I think i'd just put some extra colors to "lighten up" the whole art, but still, it's pretty cool.

gary04/23/2009

I really like the tactileness of the work. I wouldn't change a thing. Tho' if I won I might hang it upside down ;-)

designshard04/23/2009

Nice, i like that it looks as if you have cut the chunk of a wall out where it may have been put on to. ( you know how people try and take pieces of street art by cutting the front of a shop off hehe), i also like how you carried the lines through each of the arrows.

At first i disliked the part in the middle, but after looking at it for a while now it looks like a tear / rip in the paper, but i like it now!

@brianlapp04/23/2009

I love the retro feel and I love designs with reflections.
Can't really say that there's something i don't like but since i have to.. I find that the transition between the wall and the reflection feels a bit forced.

Will_Powered04/23/2009

Positive: Its fun to look at.

Negative: It causes folks to spew hot air about "what this piece really means".

... even still the hot air is worth it. Keep up the fantastic work.

Franky04/23/2009

Tight.

I havnt seen above in a grip amount of time!

RaSh04/23/2009

Wow really nice work! The arrows can symbolize a lot of things, and make for a really cool poster design!

I loved the choice of colors used in the posters, they give it a unique theme/style of their own.

The reflection in water was a little hard to identify (It's a reflection right?) Maybe make the reflection a little translucent? And you could give the arrows a little more 3D look (So the dark side closer to you will be visible) :)

Anyway great to see such work on Abduzeedo!

firetongue04/23/2009

It's so hard to pick just one great thing, but I especially love the way the same flag continues throughout all the arrows rather than having a separate union flag pattern on each one.
I suppose if I had to change something I would add more of the graffiti from the top into the main part of the background, .

Braggs04/23/2009

Like: that the arrows are so uniform and colorful (esp. the blue version) against an otherwise boring wall.

Dislike: the top-right arrow is cut off and it feels unfinished.

AndrewG12304/24/2009

Hmmm what i really like is the colors, in both of the versions i think the colors are awesome. But one thing i think i would change would be to make the ones on the wall going down, so the ones in the reflection are going up, i think that that would look a little better. Either way amazing piece of work!

Bobby04/24/2009

Hello,

I'm not too sure about the area between the arrows on the wall and the reflection. The area is alittle 'frizzy' for a print, but other than that I hope I can own this print!

Bobby

iArts04/24/2009

I would say that i like the sword that is crossing the poster right in the middle...
While at the same time i don't like the special edition green color...

Fombat04/24/2009

I love the whole concept perfect if you ask me the union jack is a great looking flag. I like pretty much everything except the transition between the reflection and the actual arrows needs a bit of work.

mikjy04/24/2009

Just fucking love it

Anonymous04/24/2009

Flags in arrows is great it works...

People dont know how to feel about there flag...it works

Cheers

Lama_04/24/2009

I prefer version with green color... its a step forward than the blue version.

Now to what I like and what I dont like:
I love those yellow fluorescent lines... they are indispensable.

I don't like graffiti... the print would be still very good without them... or maybe with different graffiti... what do I know, right? :)

RY04/24/2009

Its strength is being a true capture of a street piece.

Its weakness for me in Red White & Blue is the often negative significance of the Union Jack (as a Welshman!) - football hooligans in Europe draped in the flag- Foreign policy etc.

I_like_doodles04/24/2009

i like how the flag has been spread across the 7 arrows, i didn't notice this at first... nice.

I don't like how clean cut the wall is behind the arrows, could do with some tagging, or previous graffiti.

emcyze04/24/2009

I LIKE (big butts and I can not lie, you other brothers can't deny...sorry i had to) the way the print can be looked at both ways (upside down gives a good feeling of the down to earth reality)

I DON'T LIKE having to find something i don't like when there's nothing i don't like.

I DON'T LIKE, seeing above's paintings cleaned out here in Paris..

droppixel04/24/2009

The quality of the work that ABOVE does is what I like the most about this print. His concepts and execution are extremely well thought out. Being able to complete a hand pulled 7 color screen isn't an easy chore.

The composition and balance of the symmetric feel of the arrows on the wall juxtaposed with the 'chaotic' feel of the reflection to me expresses the thought that Union Jack is solid and sketchy at the same time. It shows that the flag is a beauty and at the same time can have it's ugly side - think back to colonization and the monarchy that has ruled the country in the past.

As for a change, the only thing I could think of changing is the 'sharpness' of the strokes. When you see the work that ABOVE has done on his past tours, his lines look damn near flawless, like he had used a straight edge. Although that 'sketchy' feel to these lines I do think is intentional to communicate a hidden message that isn't exactly drawn out for the view like he does in his typography pieces.

It is great how this piece is left open for interpretation.

artbleat04/24/2009

LOVE- the dads army
Dislike- the water (can't swim)

annieann04/25/2009

i love the design and especially the fact that the artist screens the work himself.. something all too rare these days, nice personal touches like these really make everything a lot more reall. one thing i don't care for is how the middle of the print doesn't look too well defined, but other than that.. this is a stellar piece!

Col Os Tommy 04/25/2009

(1) I like the image for the grey gaps between the arrows which give them so much vitality and make them more in your face. Frankly it's one cool, bitchin' image.
(2) The splitting (canal?) bank line could be made to be a bit more of a contrast between the image and the reflection maybe.

lars05/05/2009

I do like the parallels between two separate zones. Looks like the image is depicting what we are, smooth and flattering in the flesh and obscure and rippled in the inside.

I don't like the fact that I'm being forced to look at the arrows in one way, either up or down, there's no choice like there is in say a face for instance, if you are looking at a face the face can be interpreted to be happy, sad, mad, confused, etc. The arrows don't give you that option, the option of no direction - the direction is the direction that the arrow points toward.

Anonymous05/05/2009

I love how the union jack is consistent through the arrows and how the arrows on the top seem to flow into the rest of the design. If i have to dislike something, i suppose it would be the graffiti, nothing against graffiti art, its just not my bag

Zaij05/08/2009

I love the way you did the reflection, it sort of makes me thinks of the upper class toffs in their mansions and the lower blue collar class workers in their drab bric-a-brac domiciles.

I'd make the arrows longer so they don't remind me so much of monopoly houses.

Benjamin05/14/2009

Love the layers of straight-edge lines across the image.
Dislike the void white background behind the central arrows on the top-half of the frame.

Keep it up.
Benjamin
