Amazing Light Paintings

July 15, 2009

Light paintings, also known as light drawing or light graffiti, is a photography technique in which exposures are usually made at night or in a darkened room. The images we are featuring here are from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza, the guys behind LAPP-PRO. The light art performance photography (briefly LAPP) is a one-shot, long time bulb exposure photography, performed additionally with movement of light. LAPP originates on a real-time basis directly in front of the camera, created between opening and closing the shutter.

The work from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza was suggested by one of our readers, longo, who mentioned these guys and asked us for a post about them. As they have some really amazing photos, we made this selection to show you here. Long exposure photography involving light effects are really awesome. We also featured a post about it a while ago, Awesome Light Graffiti Pictures, and here we are again showing nice 'light paintings' to inspire you! In writing this post, I remembered the statement, "In photography, it's all about light." I would say that it all depends on the effect that you want to produce - the correct light, the right amount of light, extra light, 'moving' light and maybe no light! Personally, I really liked LAPP-PRO's photos. They are pure art! And thanks to longo for the great suggestion! Enjoy. :)

amazing! very talented.

Folks, its all about shutter speed. Put the shutter speed up to about 30 seconds or a minute or whatever you're camera can handle (uses lots of battery) and set it on still ground with a tripod. dance around with a few glowsticks or something and enjoy the magic afterwards

Anonymous07/16/2009

Wow! These would make some awesome Photoshop textures!

WOW very very cool! Will be trying it myself now, tried it with a mag-lite a month or so ago but wasn't a fraction as cool as this :)

cooney07/16/2009

way better than I've ever done.... but then again I don't have the arsenal of leds and glow sticks you must be using there... well done!

for those asking how to do this, you have to have a camera on a tripod that can do looooong exposure (any SLR will do), then just run around with a light (or swing one on the end of a string/stick/whatever...)

Doug Greathouse07/17/2009

These blow me away! I want to take them and put them on all my walls.

Anonymous07/17/2009

Use a DSLR camera or a camera where you can control the shutter speed (measured in seconds). You will want to set the camera to BULB mode. Meaning the shutter will remain open as long as the shutter button is depressed.

A tripod will be REQUIRED and a cable or wireless shutter release as well. The cable release will further prevent camera shake from appearing in your final image.

Try it. Aim the camera at the sky once the sun as set and its still partially light out!!

Haavard Aurstad07/17/2009

Simply amazing effects. Love 'em!

Is this even real or just shopped.

Well, I know it is not shopped but for an ignoramus like me it seems like it. Truly amazing.

Those light spheres look like the ones in Terminator movies which brings Arnold to the Earth out of no where.

I would like to make my brand new SUV Mahindra Scorpio ( http://www.mahindrascorpio.com ) light up like that and drive through the night. What a sight that would be!!!!
