There are several ways to do that, and it's pretty common to try to create basic geometries to simplify an icon to it's purest form. Tom Anders Watkins has a really cool project illustrating this process called Animal Logos Vol 1.

A predominantly personal project, exploring ways in which logos can be formed using only basic shapes and minimalist techniques.
