Awesome Retrography Inspiration

July 29, 2009

It seems like everyone is throwing back to the 80s these days doesn't it? I keep running into designs that pop with outrageous colors, geometric shapes and amazing typography. It seems every generation lives through a previous one in some way or another. Those that didn't grow up in the 70s and 80s (myself having been born in 1987) certainly are living vicariously through modernized (and sometimes not) retro graphics and colors. I'll be posting tons of cool retro style designs, typographies, photos and possibly artist interviews! Enjoy :)

Cruising on Behance a few days ago I came across some cool Retro Futuristic designs. This stuff is amazing. You can easily see the 80s video game inspiration! The fusion of futuristic and retro themes is really unique. Forget about that awesome poster you had in '85? We found it!

You said it yourself though, you're encountering more and more 80's styled design, but like every style in graphic design, it soon becomes a trend copied by a lot of people globally.

It maybe trendy and 'in at the moment' but on the flip side to that, the more people that are doing 80's style design, it cheapens your work I feel, because it just looks like people are going along with the crowd, copying others. You can see the original masters of this style of work in recent years, because they've been doing the 80's themed designs for a long time already.

Try to stick with being original people.

Very nice writeup. I really like "Broken" and "Awesome". I'm on Behance as well and there is a wonderful community of people who does retro/spacey design well.

Those are some awesome designs. I have been trying to do some retro-style designs lately. Last night I actually did this:

But I think that is more of a retro-grunge. Thanks for the inspiration, and I will keep working at this retro thing.

I agree that every generation lives through the previous one. Born in 1990, i'm amazed by these retro posters, the grids, bright colors, chrome effect, the list goes on.

When I started incorporating this in my designs, my father, a retired old-school graphist said "Oh god, not this again !".

It's just awesome to see that contrast between different generations, the face they make when I talk about how neon unicorns and thunderbolts are "the shizz".

Good god… I started designing in the 80s. Half my battle in design is to stay out of the 80s! Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

It's true, it seems like that 80's style is in full swing, culminating with a new tron movie. I bet after that comes out it'll reach wide spread use and then become way played out. still for now its waaay tubular/badical/righteous

Really nice designs! :D

bob12307/29/2009

The 80s is overrated imo
tons of "designers" are doing this and copying each other

Some amazing stuff, love the last one-oh hell yeah. Some stuff like the 80's type here was done in the 90's for Byorks single covers and it was inspirational, have a search for it!

Cool!!!
