The Display for Designers

My profession is 2D commercial graphic designer, and, as anyone can guess, I spend quite chunk of my time working at my digital workstation. Among all my hardware collection, monitor, by far, is the single most critical item I constantly pay attention, for obvious reason. The more the display matches the quality of final prints, the less I spend time trying to second-guess accurate picture. So far, I used two monitors-Full HD 27-incher and 24-incher- to compensate my need for more display real estate. So, I was quite impressed by this video LG made recently. Before talking about this, you have to watch it first.

Panoramic curved display powered by QHD resolution, brings the future of immersive view, viewing comfort, and style to graphic designer

My first thought was, ‘would this kind of work synergy happen to me also, if I get one of my own?’ So, here, the following thoughts are based on my discovery of 34UC97 in the context of what I call three pillars of graphic designers’ dream display: display real estate, efficiency features, and last but the most important- color consistency.

So, when I finally put 34UC97 on the desk, I thought about best ways to set it up along with existing device I have. I am currently using the iMAC where I’ve designated iMAC keyboard, and mouse. Having replaced 24-incher with 34UC97, you will notice in the image below that the new setting gives ample display real estate to work- more so than the previous dual-monitor setting. With the single wide view, I find myself more focused, away from distractions like having to switch my gaze between two monitors back and forth, or bezel, another blockage to work flow. as the console to hook up the tablet, external storage,

34-inch 21:9 space was quite spacious. Not just the dimension itself, but the QHD resolution of 3440x1440 created dense crisp display environment that I am able to view many more thumbnail images while working on selected images on Photoshop at the same time (you can check out the video below to get a sense of how such multi-tasking is done on 34UC97). And when the “curve” was added, it just made both subtle and big differences. Like I said, I no longer had to carefully drag and drop image from one monitor to the other, or cross the bezel trench, but comfortably be absorbed in my work itself. So, what ended up happening was I found myself using less of iMAC it was more than enough. Oh, by the way, Mac users, to take full advantage of 34UC97’s QHD resolution, make sure your Mac OS is the latest version.

What is also cool is that I can daisy-chain all Mac-compatible devices through the two Thunderbolt2 TM slots featured in 34UC97! This means I also can daisy-chain my Pegasus2 (data storage system compatible to Mac) to 34UC97 which would then transfer images and files four-times faster than what USB3.0 could. For other devices, 34UC97 still is the right choice as a connection hub, as it has the multi-port furnished with two HDMI ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and a Displayport. So, 34UC97 being the centerpiece seemed the best setup to me even for convenient device connecting purpose.

What ultimately impresses me is the visual comfort 34UC97 delivers. Although this 34-inch 21:9 display space definitely expanded the work space, I was bit worried if such space was too much for me to handle. Such wide screen that now stretches my field of view to 178 degree may not let me catch what’s going on the corner. But I was pleasantly surprised once more by crisp clear output that was sustained to all the edges and corners of 34UC97! I also found out that, its IPS curved display rules out the possible color shift that often occurs on the corners of VA panel, which may be a big hindrance for the professionals in my line of work. After working long hours with 34UC97, I realized how painful not having IPS panel and the curve for wide view monitor would be.

Conclusion

So, I decided to test out 34UC97 with real work. While appreciating subtle lux gold Champagne back cover, I designed a catalogue about the monitor after finding theme unique to curved IPS display. I got to tell you, everything I’ve said before really makes difference in the way I work. With 34UC97, I can transfer files whole lot faster, scan through images more efficiently, and smoothly move unto image editing phase, while not having to worry about color inconsistency. Above is a portion of the catalogue I have designed and printed out. It turns out that sRGB over 99% is really consistent with actual output! And its Flicker Free function allows more comforting eye contact as it gets rid of the invisible cascading black bar, straining to the eyes. A big plus. To graphic designers out there, if you want right display for ridding hassles and having fun working at the same time, my vote is on 34UC97, because it delivers efficiency, professional color quality, and immersive view.
