Fireworks: 7 Steps Colored Lights Header

August 20, 2008 from fabiano's blog

Last week I've created a small site, and I developed a simple effect to the main image. I can't show you the site right now, because it's still unpublished. Btw, the image was pretty nice and simple to do, so now I will show you how to create in 7 steps this simple image, just using some textures, colors and, of course, color dodge!

STEP 1 - FIRST RECTANGLE

First of all, open a new document with 1000 x 560px. Create a rectangle with a simple Linear Gradiente from color #000 to #333.

STEP 2 - FIRST TEXTURE

What we're gonna do now is start the effect of the texture. We will see 2 rectangles with 2 different textures. Create the first one, a rectangle with color #CC66FF and 800 x 242px. Apply the texture called Swirl with 100% and Transparent. Then let's play with that, set the blend to Soft Dodge and apply the filter Motion Blur with 90º and 100. You must have this image right now.

STEP 3 - DUPLICATE

In this step, just duplicate the last rectangle we have created and change the texture to Oilslick. Also set the blend mode to Normal. Check the layer we have and the their order.

STEP 4 - GROUP, MASK AND COLOR DODGE

Now, group the 2 texturized layers. Then select the dark rectangle and Copy (CTRL/Cmd + C). Now select the group and go to Modify > Mask > Paste as Mask. This will create a new layer mask. So just apply the blend Color Dodge in this layer.

STEP 5 - CREATE THE LIGHT LINES

The irregular light lines are quite simple to create. 1- Create a white ellipse. 2- Apply Feather 30. 3- Apply Linear Gradient with the default Silver. 4- Apply Soft Dodge. That's it!

STEP 6 - DISTRIBUTE THE LIGHTS

Now you can spread the lights along the purple rectangle. Notice that you can rotate, change the Opacity, stretch, etc. Take a look how it's supposed to look right now.

STEP 7 - ELEMENTS OF LAYOUT

The main image are ready, now use your imagination and complete the layout. Here we did not focus on that, but you can create your own wireframe and site structure.
