Incredible New Portfolio of Dave Hill
July 21, 2009
Who doesn't know Dave Hill, the guy with the awesome hdr looking photos. Well, I think that was more when he first started getting recognized for his style and as time goes by Dave Hill is showing that he is just improving even more bringing very creative concepts and scenarios to his photos that already are full of style. So when creativity meets skills you get a great portfolio like the one you about to see.
Dave Hill recently released a new website with a few extra pieces you may not seen, it also has a behind the scenes section where you can see the photo shots and clear out some doubts about how his work is done, it also has a blog and a display of his personal work.

That video showing the overall process was amazing!
Very Nice work.
Incredible work!
This work is amazing! Is this HDR? I'm so baffled? Could we get a tutorial? What is that tin he holds up to the camera? I need to know!!!!!
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW
Anyone in Italy that wants to do something similar with me?
This is an awesome way to do a portfolio. I'm gearing up to do something for a client... think I might try a variation on this.
Those shots are amazing. It would be interesting to see all the equipment he uses.
Awesome story telling to his great looking photos.
loved the video. exceptionally intriguing to watch.
Thanks for posting this.
I'm not so sure that what Dave Hill does to his photographs could be considered HDR in the conventional sense (read: Photomatix-generated tonemapped and colorized images), even though the tonal range of his images does tend to be highly dynamic. I'm guessing that the result you see is some combination of high-contrast lighting and his own special blend of processing effects, which he describes as "too much time in Photoshop." Make no mistake about it: the LIGHTING is integral to this look. Without a properly lit subject/atmosphere, there is no "Dave Hill effect."
Scott Kelby has written an article on how to achieve this look, which can be located here: http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2009/archives/2946
That aside, I LOVE Dave Hill's work. He's a HUGE inspiration.
Wow, nice!
One of my favourite photographers. Amazing works.
So good! I just bought a camera today, and aim to take HDR photos of this caliber. Nice work!
Nice photos, shoddy code. Via this page's error message:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT(node.nid) AS nid, node.vid AS node_vid, node.type AS node_type, RAND() AS _random FROM node node INNER JOIN term_node term_node ON node.vid = term_node.vid WHERE term_node.tid = 23 ORDER BY _random ASC ) count_alias
Whoever wrote this query needs to stop and consider a career change, perhaps in the fast food industry flipping burgers.
Great work, but none of these are HDR. Research more.
Am I the only person who thinks these are great images but are so over-processed they may as well have paid a good artist to draw/paint them!?
I almost painted some grafitti for a background in one of his shoots in Nashville, but the project fell through. Awesome style! I love how how can make photos look like detailed illustrations.
wow, i honestly expected some totally elaborate lighting setup done in a studio! This is awesome. Thx for the post!
Um, that's not HDR. HDR is when you take several pictures of varing exposures and tone map them. This is just photoshopped art...not even qualifies as photography.
The nature of HDR Photography makes any shot with anything at all that moves impossible. Which is why most of these are just made to look like HDR with after effects and compositing. Don't get me wrong, they look awesome, just not HDR...
truly high quality. I can't even believe how good some of this looks. the amount of detail in the rocks behind the cowboy is insane. the girls's adventure pictures have amazing color as well.

Absolutely incredible work. Loved seeing the video showing all the prep work and then seeing the final shot is amazing. So much detail is shown an. Wonder what type of settings does he use and special equipment. Anyone know?

Really like the adventuregirl ones in particular, but they are all great!
Really cool, there should be a service to do this companies advertisements.
Wow! Amazing set! I really like the one with Football ball! :)
It's creative and original and it looks great!
Thanks for the exposure to his photos. But in terms of netiquette, you should not hot link to his site for photos displayed in your blog entry. Copy them to your own server first and serve them from there.
Surprise your on digg.....
Well I would say this guy is a great photoshop artist considering all the images are heavily photoshoped, and I mean HEAVILY haha, nice try though,
TRUE HDR photography involves merely mixing the ranges of lighting of three or more exposures without any additional lighting or "bounce boards" as seen in the video, not to mention it should never have photoshop elements in it(no matter if its a lot of PS work or a little PS work), then it merely becomes a doctored image(aka not true photography
Don't get me wrong the images are great, but don't call it 'true hdr photography done right' because its not, if you claim no photoshop then look at the last two pictures cause they are pure ps with merely HDR characters that are legit photographs, and I laugh at the idea of this photographer getting all those elements together in the "modern warfare" section
I like the first one and the second last one.
HDR has the unnatural and fabricated look.
I love David Hill's art. The more recent photographs is his best stuff, IMO. It's great when an artist gets creative freedom to do whatever they want!
Looks shopped
LOL @ the 1st "Modern warfare" picture. The guy in center has the rank of specialist, only he's wearing it upside down. Morons.
so much effort goes into creating these awesome photos. i never realised. totally worth it in the end though
Absolutely stunning
Really Great!
Those are absofreakinglutely incredible!
Totally awesome!
ahahahaahahahaha this is awful
I host a show (www.talknerdytome.tv) with Rian Flynn, Dave Hill's lighting guy on the Adventure Girl shoot, and that set is not in HDR. Just a ton of post.
I recently published on my blog Dave Hill look Photoshop tutorial Check it out if you like Dave Hill style.
Incredible collection of work. Love the additional video that shows everything in motion and how it comes together. Great post work.
How long will it take to get a Subordinate Work Visa?
Why does photoshop get such a bad rap? Isn't Photoshop simply another "means to an end".
i love it so much!
Wowww!! absolutely incredible !!
amazing work
Very cool, especially the soccer ball. thanks for sharing
Thanks for article. Everytime like to read you.

HDR photography is so effective! Great!
LOVE HDR photog! Wish I had the equipment/patience for it myself. Love watching the process -- time consuming, but totally worth the result.
What happened to classic photography that wasn't manipulated to hell and back?
@ Anonymous- "classic photography" is still very much around. There's nothing wrong with making Art- which this is an incredible example of. Afterall, why should "Photography" be limited to what a lens can capture?
To kitschy for me... and little connection with photography in a Manner of Speaking
