Inspiration: Business Card Designs

January 13, 2009

I know there is a lot of different kinds of business card now days but since abduzeedo is giving out some traditional cards prints, I focused on that and put up some great card designs by really good designers so you can inspire yourself when creating yours.

If you have one post it on your comments. Thank you!

Amazing....unlimited possibilities. To sum up way cool. Did I see a little frilly typography in the form of the decorated 2009 on one?

I think a few of these are nice (nena nguyen koi) but I really am not a fan of the web 2.0 / preexisting business card template look many of them have. And what truly self respecting designer would put a calendar on the back of their card?

Brandon Cox01/13/2009

Just in time for my own business card re-branding - thanks for the inspiration!

I have seen a lot of creative business cards and I always love to see the approach that companies take on them. These are great examples. Thanks for posting.

Jared01/13/2009

Unfortunately most of these cards represent one of the major problems for most designers: they don't understand how to appropriately translate their illustration / photomanipulation style to a business card. Almost every design is either a) hard to read, b) full of silly gradients, or c) just a complete hodgepodge of graphical elements. A business card should convey a message about your business and your style, but should not interfere with its main purpose: to give someone your contact information. Of all these cards, only one stands out as being well designed: SocialThing.

Kristoffer01/13/2009

Some pretty nice looking cards. I like the koi fish design also, simple and sleek. I think the web 2.0 look is used because they look good to people outside of design (probably the people that would be potential clients).

Also, wtf a calendar? That's uh...nice I guess, but kind of useless.

oormoo01/13/2009

The colors and designs are very nice, however it will not look this vivid once it's printed.

Anonymous11/12/2009

They can if they use quality printing facilities ,clearly you are not a designer

paul0v201/13/2009

@b-dub996 - I think putting a calendar on the back of the card it's just a good way to keep people looking at your card more often than they would normally look, I don't see what's so wrong with that.

Chris01/13/2009

Wow - These designs are great! We would love to print for some of these great graphic designers at www.printprintprint.biz.

Yordan01/13/2009

Some are truly amazing, great post!

Brett Carel01/13/2009

People may not like the calendar on the back design, but it does give a higher chance that the people will keep the card. Not much of a chance and I wouldn't do it especially if your title is that of a designer... but it does give a higher chance.

poGDI01/13/2009

Awesome!

Dioxy01/13/2009

Thanks for featuring :D here is the updated version of the business card http://dioxyzone.deviantart.com/art/Dioxyportfolio-Corporate-81157683 ;)

b-dub99601/13/2009

point taken on the calendar, however... if the holder of the card is keeping it for the calendar (which is on the back) then you've just done yourself a disservice. you want the holder to keep and remember your card for it's unique, creative and information content. that is the whole point for someone to even have a business card, to showcase and inform people, not give them a desk calendar. I can't speak for everyone, but if I get a business card that is designed well and is creative, I keep it. but give me one that has anything but your info and a small sample of your work, and my trash can gets a snack.

unfortunately..all the images aren't showing up..only 2 so far..please fix so that i can atleast view the page, beyond 2 card designs

Jacen01/14/2009

I always love these kinds of posts because I get great inspiration for my own designs. Great job!
@paul0v2 I agree, I think the calendar would keep people looking at your card just because there are not a lot of people who do that so you get bonus points for keeping peoples attention on your card.

cnsmeira01/15/2009

Dmk
I know you can download the source files on psdtuts to work with, but come on. At least put your own creativity to use and don't call this

http://sabrewulf1880chaosf.deviantart.com/art/More-Business-Card-Practic...

and this

http://sabrewulf1880chaosf.deviantart.com/art/ATA-Teknik-Card-Design-2-9...

your own original work. there are so many images on this site alone to inspire you use those. yeah you sited psdtuts on your post but at least change it 30%, colors, layout, font, something, and don't use it to try and drive people to "donate" to you. it's a very thin line that is being walked here and it always pains me to see someone's work being used as another's when the one using is probably more than capable of creating something just as good. it's not only safer legally and better ethically, but so much more rewarding.

b-dub99601/15/2009

forgive me DMK. that observation was mistakenly directed at you. in my baffled haze i misunderstood that you too were questioning this person's ethics. Abduzeedo rocks as an inspiration site, but i think a little more research needs to be done before images like this are posted (the psdtuts version is a stronger design than with the very slight changes made to the one posted here). again, i am sorry about that dmk.

paul0v201/15/2009

I don't see nothing wrong with a guy who follows a tutorial to create his own business card, the post I made is for inspiration and even know he followed a tutorial his card looks good.

Now if you see in another way it may look bad for him as a graphic designer to not have an original work on his business card, and only gives more credits to the guy who wrote the tuto which is provably very happy to see his work spread like that.

And for the legally issues lol, go on the guys page and there says that he followed a tuto and there is the link for the tuto too so I guess that would do it.

Your Site is Great!

Vivian01/16/2009

Great ones! I realy like print jobs, and these cards are so cool!

b-dub99601/16/2009

I guess my biggest beef is with the creativity. this is a creative forum / community right? this person admits that this is not his idea, then doesn't even bother to change the design when making another version for what looks like a client. that's the beautiful thing about graphic design, you can pick and pull from outside influences to create something new and your own. yes there is the view that if you're pulling from other people then it really isn't your own, but you're creating something that someone else hasn't. this is not the case here. it's very nearly exactly like the tutorial and when you do something like that for a client you're not a designer, you've just become a production monkey. I'll stop there because this "design" does not deserve the amount of attention we have given it.

SHhh01/16/2009

I have to also agree with BDub. I think that if you were going to acknowledge this biz card for good design, then the original source should've been shown. Not the copycat. Personally, I would be upset if someone was making money off of my design. Technically if the original designer wanted to, they could sue the copycat for infringement. Because there is obvious use of the original source files from the PSD tuts. So, does the copycat have rights to use that textured background? Is it a free image? Only the original artist knows. The copycat artist could've changed colors, use different fonts, heck use another angle. But they didn't and it gets me upset as well to see such blatant disregard for others rights to their work. That's my take on that.

I do also have to comment on the calendar issue. One comment. How many legit people keep those stupid state farm or hallmark biz cards with the calendar on the back? Its a technique that is outdated. Just know that if your design is strong enough, they will keep it. Because after that year is over, do you want them to trash it, because your outdated as well?

That's it…peace out.

Roger Chasteauneuf01/26/2009

some cracking designs, great inspiration. Thanks. I actually dont think they are over-designed really and are still appropriate for a bus card. Design is good, it makes people wanna keep it and as long as it doesnt compromise the copy its fine.

Violet01/29/2009

Yes, this business card:

http://fc39.deviantart.com/fs20/f/2007/303/6/2/62a538c78c0363c8.png

was definitely a tutorial on PSD Tuts like a couple other people said... in all due respect, I think this card should be removed from this list.
