Newspapers Design
As this is one of my first posts on Abduzeedo I decided to write a quite unconventional one. I'm a regular reader of Abduzeedo since about a half year - I'll never regret - but articles about printed mediums are pretty rare on Abduzeedo. So, in this post I'll show you some newspaper designs that are great in my opinion. Also, there's a great video from the TED Talks by Jacek Utko on how design can save newspapers.

Die Presse am Sonntag
I'm Austrian, therefore it's pretty normal to subscribe to an Austrian newspaper. "Die Presse am Sonntag " is the sunday edition of the daily paper "Die Presse".
They have a great layout and quality journalism, but the sunday edition is even better designed:

Hartford Courant
Since many years the Hartford Courant is constantly among the world's best designed newspapers. I think that especially the typography is awesome.

The Rzeczpospolita
The Rzeczpospolita won an award at the 27th competition of newspaper design of the SND (Society of Newspaper Design). In my opinion this newspaper really deserved this award, although the whole design's quite conservatie and traditional.

Dubai Xpress
A very new (launched in 2007), clear structured magazine.

Chicago Sun-Times
The redesigned look of a popular daily paper in Chicago. In my opinion, the standard of the content is debatable, the design isn't.

The Virginian Pilot
There's nothing to say about this design, except: Absolutely awesome.

I'm really surprised at how some of these newspapers are actually cool looking and stylish... i cant remember the last time i looked at a newspaper.

8 years ago I was working as a newspaper layout artist. You remembered me about that time :) Now I realize how much I love QuarkXPress :)
seriously, impressive! and these newspapers are way way stylish than fashion magazines and way way arty than design magazines.

Funny, I came to abduzeedo to look for inspiration for my next newspaper special section. And here's an inspiration post on newspaper design!
If anyone is curious, my site has some of my newspaper designs. I do mostly magazine work now, but design is definitely something that's getting lost in the web shuffle. I haven't seen websites take the time to individually design and present every article the way it is in magazines. It's more about speed and re-using our blog templates nowadays.
You should definatly check out the Belgian, awarded newspaper "De Morgen" . Not only awarded for its design, but photography as wel! Nice roundup though :)

Loved the collection, but I'm missing "De Morgen"
It earned an award for strong typography somewhere last year, it stood next to some much better known (globally) newspapers.

Design can save the newspaper! Yes. Readers can also save the printed newspaper, by publishers giving them more social options online and letting a community truly grow, not be censored and controlled.

One of the worse would have to be the Dominion post from New Zealand, just terrible design all round with no method to the madness.

I love the design of The Virginian-Pilot. Really appealing to the eye. And the use of whitespace is superb! Sure wouldn't mind getting this at my doorstep every morning.
Just for the record, Portugal is *not* a South American country. It's located in Western Europe.

Oh my! I am LOVING The Virginian-Pilot! There is so much content on there, yet they STILL create white space. That is just beautiful!

The South Florida Sun Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News, Salt Lake Tribune and Orlando Sentinel in the US and Portugal's "i" are all great newspapers
A true pity you didn't spoke about Expresso or Publico, winners of some European newspaper design prizes.
Expresso is talking as a graphic designer, a piece of art... one of the best newspapers I ever had the pleasure to read.

The selections are good! Thumbs up! I particularly like the balance in the Hartford Courant and the Virginia Pilot.
"Presse Am Sonntag" is really good. Had the chance to go through it a few weeks back and it really is a great piece of journalism combined with high-end aesthetics.
