Abduzeedo 2010 Light Effects in Photoshop

A few weeks ago I posted a tutorial showing how I created the new Abduzeedo's 2010 symbol, which will be used for icons, posters, t-shirts and other gears. That tutorial was about the Illustrator walk-through process and in the end there was the light effect version of the symbol that I created in Photoshop. So in this tutorial I will show you how to create that effect. It's a sort of monitor/halftone effect mixed with glows and other light effects. We will play with Blend Modes and Blurs. The whole process is quite simple and it won't take more than 20 minutes to achieve the same result. Step 1 Open Photoshop and create a new document. I used A4 for the size. Also RGB colors. After that double click on the background layer and apply a Layer Style to it. Use Gradient Overlay. For the colors use black and in the center a dark blue. For the Style use Radial. Step 2 Import the vector object from Illustrator and paste it in the center of the document. Step 3 Duplicate the layer and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius. Step 4 After the gaussian blur, go to Layer>Layer Styles>Inner Shadow. Change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge, use white for the color and 40% for the Opacity. For the Angle use 90º. For the Distance use 91 pixels, for the Choke use 0 and for the Size use 3 pixels. Step 5 With the duplicated layer, duplicate it again because we will need another layer with the symbol for the effect. Then select one of the and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 100 pixels for the Radius. This layer will be on top of the other one with inner shadow. Step 6 With the third copy of the symbol, select it and go to Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay. Use white for the color. Then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius. After that with the layer selected go to Layer>Group Layers. The layer will be inside a folder in the Layer Palette. Select the group and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. You will have a really cool light effect like the image below. Step 7 Add a layer on top of the other layers and select the Paint Bucket Tool (G). Change the type from Foreground to Pattern, then select a dotted pattern. You can download the pattern I used here. As you can see the background is black and the dots are white. Step 8 Go to Edit>Transform>Warp. For the Warp type select Fisheye. Then pull the little controller down to change the fisheye effect. Step 9 Change the Blend Mode of the pattern layer to Color Dodge and the glowing areas will have this sort of monitor, halftone effect. Conclusion This light effect it's pretty much the same effect I use to create the Abduzeedo's logo effect. However I added a few Layer Styles to increase the light effects, especially in the edges. As you could see the whole process is pretty simple and it can be done in 20 minutes or less. It's all about playing with the tool ;)

Abduzeedo 2010 Logo Design

Every new year I like to try new things with the Abduzeedo logo. In 2009 I changed the typography a little bit, but now that it's 2010 I decided that the blog needed a symbol. That necessity came up when we are finishing the Abduzeedo iPhone app and we needed to have an icon. So in this tutorial/case study I will show you how I created the symbol and what the inspiration behind it was. We will use Adobe Illustrator for the tutorial Inspiration My first idea was to play with a triangle. First because it resembles the abduction light coming from the sky, and second it also resembles an 'A'. Of all plane figures the triangle is both rigid and strong, but the beauty of the equilateral triangle reminds us of those lessons necessary to keep our spiritual building both strong and secure, now and forevermore. Following this idea I looked for references in style. My idea was to create something simple without gradients but with some color overlays. I also didn't want anything rounded, and instead wanted to try something more acute. Also, check out our series of articles about logos called Logos A-Z, especially the first one that is for the letter A - http://abduzeedo.com/logo-design-z Step 1 Open Illustrator and create a new document. The size is not important right now. After that get the Polygon Tool and create a triangle. Step 2 With the Pen Tool (P) create a point in the middle of the base of the triangle. After that with the Direct Selection Tool (A) select the point and move it up like the image below. Step 3 Duplicate the triangle twice. After that rotate one of the copies (1). Select 2 of the triangles, the original and the one you rotated and go to Window>Pathfinder. Select the Minus Front option over the Shape Mode, it's the second. You will have to delete some parts to leave just the ones inside of the original triangle. Step 4 With the Rectangle Tool (M) create a rectangle like from the bottom left to the center of the base (1). After that with the Pen Tool (P) delete and move to create half of the base of the symbol (2). Repeat the same process to create the other half of the base. Use the image below for reference. Step 5 Repeat again the previous step to create the right side. Step 6 It's time to make some adjustments, with the Direct Selection Tool (A) move the points to make the symbol a little bit bolder. Use the image below for reference. Step 7 Now it's time to add some colors. I used 4 basic colors, pink, yellow, green and cyan (1), the order is very important. After that go to Window>Transparency. Select the all objects and change the Transparency mode to Multiply. By doing that there will be 3 new colors, red, dark green and purple. Step 8 Create a new document, I used A4 for the size. Then with the Rectangle Tool (M) create a rectangle to fill the whole page. Change the color of the rectangle to (#383434). Step 9 Copy the symbol from the other document and paste it in the new one with the dark background. As I was using Multiply for the Transparency Mode, the symbol won't be shown. So, change the Transparency mode back to Normal and change the color of the symbol to white. Step 10 Now just paste again the color symbolo and align it to be over the white version. That way the colors will be visible. Conclusion Now let's finish the poster adding the logotype "Abduzeedo" with the slogan "abducted by design". The idea of this little walkthrough was to show you the creative process behind the new symbol we will be using on Abduzeedo now in 2010. We are still working on some new features, so you will start to see this symbol more and more. Also we will have this poster printed in case you want to support the blog, as well as t-shirts. Light Effect version With the icon done I created another version of the poster adding some old school light effects. But this is for the next tutorial.

Reader Tutorial: Geometric Flower Effect Logo in Illustrator

In this tutorial I will show you how I made this nice logo for one of my clients in Czech Republic. Feel free to use it as inspiration, but please do not copy it in any form. All copyrights belong to the owner whom I made it for. Last but not least, please excuse Czech language appearing in the dialog boxes on pictures; I use a localized version of illustrator. The final product will look like this: Step 1 We'll start by making a new document with 180 mm width and height. If you do not like it you can select whatever dimensions you want. Then we will make one horizontal and one vertical guide positioned directly in the center of the document. Select the Ellipse tool (L), create the ellipse, fill it with no color, select black outline and put it in the center of the document. I made one 160 mm high and 40 mm wide. So it will look something like this: Step 2 Now, we are going to copy the ellipse 8 times around the circle. Easiest way to do this is to use Rotate Tool (R). So select the ellipse, click on the Rotate Tool (R), hold down ALT and click on the center of the ellipse, dialog box should appear. Enter 20 in angle and click on copy button. You will get this: Step 3 Now press CTRL+D 7 times and you get to this point: Step 4 We can now delete the guide lines; we do not need them later. The easiest part of this tutorial is done, now we are starting with ant work :-) We need to divide the final product in to small pieces. We are going to make it using Pathfinder. So select all ellipses and go to Window>Pathfinder and click on Divide: Step 5 Now press Shift+CTRL+G to ungroup all objects. We are going to delete all needless objects. It is all 5 inner circles composed of 18 objects. So, 3 outer circles of objects remain as on the picture below. Step 6 We are going to play with gradients now. It will be quite long but the output will be awesome. So let’s start: select the objects with Direct Selection Tool (A) (press Shift and click on each object) and apply a gradient from C30 M100 Y0 K0 to C30 M100 Y0 K80 like the image below: Step 7 Then select another group of 6 objects and apply gradient from C80 M100 Y0 K0 to C80 M100 Y0 K80, here we go: Step 8 Select another following group of 6 objects and apply gradient from C0 M100 Y100 K0 to C0 M100 Y100 K80. You’ll get something like this: Step 9 For now you have enough information to know how to apply gradients for other groups of 6 objects. 4th group gradient from C0 M50 Y100 K0 to C0 M50 Y100 K80 5th group gradient from C0 M0 Y100 K0 to C0 M0 Y100 K80 6th group gradient from C50 M0 Y100 K0 to C50 M0 Y100 K80 7th group gradient from C100 M0 Y100 K0 to C100 M0 Y100 K80 8th group gradient from C100 M0 Y0 K0 to C100 M0 Y0 K80 9th group gradient from C100 M100 Y0 K0 to C100 M100 Y0 K80 If all went well you will get something like this: Step 10 Now we are almost done, just remove the black outlines from all objects. And you are done with the output. This output does not correspond to physics. But applying the gradients to specific directions on each object, which our flower consists of, can make for some pretty awesome effects. It can be done by selecting each object, clicking on a Gradient Tool (G) and playing with it. Like these two examples: Conclusion First example is a bit complicated I will explain it later. Second example goes out from our output made in this tutorial. It was made only by rotating a gradient in proper direction on each object. If you were able to make the second example, then change the Blending mode to Darken and copy it. On the copy - you have to make axial symmetry of each object or gradient. You can make it by axial mirroring or just by rotating the gradient to opposite side of object. If you are done with it, just put the copy over the original one and you will get the output like in the first example. About the Author My name is Tomas Varil. I am from Prague (Czech Republic).
