Comic Book Artist: Jack Kirby

Jack Kirby, along with Stan Lee are the main responsible for giving birth and concepting many Marvel charachters, such as The Avengers. Jack passed the away in 1994, but his legacy as one of the gods of the comic book art is speechless.

Book Suggestion: New Skateboard Graphics

Inspiration is everywhere, I believe everyone knows that but each one of us has some preferences or things that inspire more than others, in my case it's skateboard graphics. That's why the book suggestion of this week is about Skateboard Graphics. It's called New Skateboard Graphics. If you remember we ran a giveaway of this book 3 years ago, but I was checking it out again and had to add to our book suggestion list.

Skateboarding grew from a Southern California hobby born out of surfing to a nationwide trend, which developed into a visual style. While the bottoms of skateboards have always been adorned with graphics, back then only a handful of skateboard manufacturers existed. Today, vast amounts of visuals are created for skateboards, with more than 40 major brands in the market. Because of how the sport has grown, however, many of these graphics are used for only a season, and then are forgotten about - until now. From spreads of full-board designs to detailed crops of patterns and graphics, Skateboard Graphics features the best, most innovative work going on today. Interviews with designers and creators of major brands, like Joe Castrucci of Habitat and Jamie Thomas of Zero, will help elucidate this colorful phenomenon.

Comic Book Artist: Jim Steranko

If there's a comic book artist who actually defined the 60's and 70's comic art, this guy it's probably Jim Steranko. Combining art genres such as pop art, op art, psychodelia with regular comic art, not only he gave a fresh air on this kind of art, but also pushed the boundaries of what could be done.

Wave Series by Tom Veiga - New Artworks and a Video

Back in 2009 we showcased here the Stylish Wave Series by Tom Veiga. Tom is a very talented brazilian artist that uses waves as his main inspiration, using design as a tool to reflect waves and all their characteristics using few lines, highlighting color, movement and contrast. Tom Veiga has a lot of new artworks to show and he also made a collection for Billabong, so check it out to know more about it.

In september of 2010 the Marketing Director from Billabong Girls Europe got in touch with Tom and asked him to be a guest artist in one of their collections. In January of 2011 Tom started the creative process and created three exclusive arts for Billabong, images that would take Brasil's colors, movement and happiness to Europe. The collection is called "Tom Veiga for Billabong" and we have a really nice video about it to show you.

"My art is the union of design and waves, in my artworks I always try to translate in lines, shapes, colors and contrasts all the inspiration I get from waves."

Tom was the first brazilian artist to do a collection for Billabong Europe and it's a great honor for us, Brazilians, to present his work here. Jaguar XKX: Concept Car

Concept Cars always have been a fascinating subject for us to get inspired for the future. What will be the next coming? Today, I am showcasing this concept car by Hussain Almossawi and Marin Myftiu from Skyrill.com, I hope you guys will enjoyed it!

The XKX Jaguar is a new generation electric roadster, aimed at pushing both performance and power efficiency to a new level. This concept tries to revive the glorious design lines of the brand, combining fresh solutions, a unique, new aerodynamics, tailored around the electrical elements of the power system as well as cutting-edge energy feedback.

Inspired by the e-type from 50 years ago

Sketches

One of the main challenges during the concept drafting was avoiding the heaviness associated with many of today’s muscle cars, including actual Jaguar models. Like with the models of the golden era, we wanted to recreate a thin, elegant profile, but still showing off all the extra power and technological improvements. The solution was dividing the volume into two separate perceptive entities: one that “floated over” and transmitted the characteristic veil-like feeling, and another, below this layer, that spoke of all the power and adrenaline this car was capable of, which was translated into ample front and rear openings at the sides.

The morphology of the lower part was the most important and is obviously the most distinctive compared to current roadsters; the delicate equilibrium of the large curves of the air intakes had at the same time to transmit aggressiveness, but still appearing light and ephemeral, giving the adequate perceptive lightness to the upper curves.

This, is partly due to an intricate array of reasons, but in large part it’s also the very nature of those stylish cars of the ‘70s; the minimalistic, flowing lines of the E-Type, are maybe the very perfection of an automobile, almost entirely deprived of all the subtleties and excessive detail, they have very little to be improved.

Just like the sculptural representations of Konstantin Brancusi, the E-Type represents somehow the very essence of an automobile, with almost total smoothness, the perfect balance of muscle and elegance, all embodied in a dreamlike shell that seems to stay afloat, hovering on some dense, invisible fluid which also shaped it’s very being.

Given the circumstances, is somehow a paradox to try to follow an evolutionary path that leads to something “better” than these masterpieces. However, a new, in depth study of some glorious Jaguar models, was in our view a chance to find that path again, looking for distinctive DNA traits of the model through the years.

And applying current styling trends and standards, especially in the view of new body-forming techniques and new technologies, we started to envision the very successor of the E-Type and XK8 Jags, applying similar, stylish curves that run harmoniously from nose to tail, some of them uninterruptedly.

Comic Book Artist: Bruce Timm

Although the initial dream of Bruce Timm was to become a comic book artist, he actually turned into the great animator behind the DC comics animated series for TV such as Batman Beyond, Batman Adventures, Superman and Justice League. Later he would do some comics based on the same series, anyway his influence on the comics area is undeniable.
