Water drops in photoshop in 5 minutes

A couple of days ago while I was reading a magazine I saw a pretty cool soda ad where they used a lot of water drops in its design. It was excellent and I thought that I could create the same effect in Photoshop using the layer styles.

The basic idea of how to create water drops is that they are a bit complex, they have highlights, shadows, transparencies, inner shadows and inner highlights. The best thing is that we can create all of those effects using the Layer Styles in Photoshop. You have shadow, inner shadow, inner glow, glow, bevel and many more.

Even though there are lots of Photoshop training tutorials on the net I decided to create my own, plus it gave me an opportunity to create my first screencast. Take a look it’s only 5 minutes.

I really liked your tutorial, it's a shame you didn't speak at all :p you can record an audio explaining what you're doing and edit later.. It would be a great help to begginers and a lot more interesting to watch :)

Nice!

I think you should list down all the values of each of the blending options though.

I made a similar action and brush-sets a little while ago for a client who needed an orange/fanta like droplets header in both Photoshop and Illustrator. I think this is one of the better ways to do this in PS.

However, I think its' such a shame that videos like this are so tiny and blurred. No details can be watched and it just vanishes in my 22" screen.

Nevertheless, great work and nice post.
you could accompany this post with a little action and/or brush-set / style for people to download.

Howabout on software people can actually afford, like the Gimp (free), or Corel Paint Shop Pro (about $100)? I prefer the Gimp since PSP isn't made for Linux, though I consider it far superior to Photoshop when it comes to usable UI.

I used to love PSP, but after I tried photoshop I was hooked. Most things that the average web designer or graphic designer use are just faster with photoshop. Plus you have to realize that the writers have to consider their audience when they are writing articles. Most people viewing this site (based on comments) have photoshop. Hence, most of the tutorials are going to be about photoshop.

It would be nice to have step by step instructions, perhaps a screenshot or two. Also, can't you do this in like 3 clicks with After Effects?

Anonymous (not verified) 08/25/2007

Since this technique is content-agnostic, it would be easier to use, understand, and experiment with as a PSD download rather than a screencast. Would you be willing to provide the PSD for download? (Using the Coral CDN for free bandwidth of course. :-P)

My Jing account, where the screecast is, has reached the monthly bandwidth limit of 1GB. Viewers cannot access any media in my account until my next monthly bandwidth allocation begins. I will have to find another place to publish the screencast... Thanks for the comment...
