The evolution of the desktop web is quite interesting, we went from Flash websites that were very unique, some quite futuristic like 2Advanced to also layouts that were more editorial. Flash allowed that kind of freedom because it didn't need to be complaint with W3C and browsers. Then the web 2.0 came and things went back to simple HTML/CSS. Now with HTML 5, CSS 3 and Javascript we start to see more and more layouts that are more refined and have more editorial look. That's the case of the AgXXI UI/UX project shared by Diana Polar.
