Discover the Studio Museum in Harlem’s new building by Adjaye Associates—a bold, community-centered design opening November 15, 2025
The Studio Museum in Harlem is set to open its new seven-floor, 82,000-square-foot building by Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson late Fall 2025. The design reimagines the museum as both civic landmark and community hub.
The building rises over 125th Street with a bold, masonry facade punctuated by windows of varying sizes and proportions. The composition recalls Harlem’s iconic brownstones and churches while projecting a distinctly contemporary edge. At street level, glass doors open onto descending steps that evoke the stoops of neighborhood homes, blurring the line between city and institution.
Inside, generous public spaces like the central stair and lobby “stoop” extend this openness, offering vantage points, gathering areas, and circulation that feels civic as much as cultural. The architecture balances monumentality with intimacy, creating a museum that resonates both within Harlem and far beyond.
The opening begins with a Community Day, offering free admission and building-wide programming for all ages. Regular hours will run Wednesday through Sunday, with late nights on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission is suggested, and Sundays remain free.
Inaugural exhibitions include a major presentation on Tom Lloyd, a rotating installation from the museum’s 9,000-work collection, and a showcase of more than 100 Artist-in-Residence alumni. Site-specific commissions by Camille Norment and Christopher Myers bring art directly into the architecture.
With its new home, the Studio Museum expands its footprint and reaffirms its role as a cultural landmark, rooted in Harlem and shaping global conversations in art and design.
