I bumped into Zhuzhu's work while browsing around deviantART and his pieces got my attention. Zhuzhu is an artist living in Shanghai, China, with a background in watercolor and traditional art techniques. He has specialized in digital painting since 2002, using Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop. He is currently teaching at the China Academy of Art, Shanghai Institute of Design Training Centre and he also wrote two books on digital painting techniques, and several tutorials. Zhu is my last name, Hai Bo is my first name, but in Chinese you should call me Zhu Hai Bo. As you will be able to see here, Zhuzhu has pieces from different styles, some of them are classic, innocent and beautiful, other are controversial and intriguing. It's always nice to see different points of view of a same artist! Anyway, I made this selection from some of his work and you can also check out his DA page for further images. Enjoy the images! :)

Phil Dunne is one of those great digital artists that we really like to keep posted about. He is always surprising us with his pieces, talent and creativity. At this post he will show us all the creative process for his masterpiece Heist. Besides all his talent, Phil is always very kind! When I talked to him about the possibility of doing the creative process for one of his pieces, he not only agreed but also got really excited about it and did this great case study for us. So here we are... showing you the steps of his creation, Heist. Also make sure to visit Phil Dunne's incredible portfolio, Love The Robot. Enjoy... So, I present Phil's work and words! When I begin to work on an illustration, I always have a rough sketch of it in my notebook. I carry a notebook everywhere with me, so I scribble out ideas that just pop into my head. I keep it beside my bed as I tend to get the most ideas when I'm about to go to sleep and when I wake up. I keep a small biro pen with the notebook so I can quickly rough out a concept. I always write notes beside each doodle because in my head, I'm planning out what coloring, layers and effects I'm going to use in Photoshop. I keep a few gigabytes spare on my hard drive for a digital scrapbook. My digital scrapbook is a folder filled with jpegs, tiffs, pngs, scans, urls and mpegs from the internet of stuff I find inspiring, like a picture of a fashion shoot, a cool website or an old advert I've downloaded. I also collect a lot of clippings from magazines and books and take tons of pictures on my mobile phone camera, like graffiti, street textures and urban spaces to use as reference points in my illustrations. Below is a screen grab of the pics that inspired me for this illustration. I think it was heavily influenced by the late, great Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight, and by my favorite DC Comic's character The Creeper. I wanted to create something dark and mysterious; very moody and bleak...something I've never touched on before. Also, this scene with Heath Ledger really inspired me... As the embed is not available, here is the link to it. The concept for the piece called 'Heist' was about a struggling artist who cannot afford to stay in his career because he has no money. Rather than give up on his one true love and passion, he decends into the underworld and decides to steal and gamble to pay for his art. This illustration was originally a personal piece, but I decided to submit it to the Depthcore chapter release called 'Heist.' I roughly spend a couple of days on an illustration. When I think it's nearly finished, I leave it for a couple of days and go back to it, just to add touch ups and highlights...it's good to give yourself fresh eyes when viewing your own work. I also work on concepts before I work into a finished piece, like below, you can see where I wanted to go with the illustration in this never before released concept illustration: Before I begin, I assemble what images and piece I need to work. For this piece, I placed a stack of miniature playing cards onto my scanner and I found an old photograph and used the back of it for the main image. Then I work on the main illustration. I sketch my character's face using a set of technical pencils from 4H to 2B. I work quiet large, into A3 to get the right amount of detail I need. I take my time drawing, it's important that I get everything just right. If a drawing doesn't look like it does in my head, I tear it up and start all over again. The eyes are the main focus of this piece so I concentrate on getting the mood and intensity just right. When the drawing is done, I scan it into Photoshop at a very high resolution, sometimes it might be around 600dpi. I clean up the image slightly with the clone tool and adjust the brightness and contrast, to give it an aged look. You can see the difference in the original scan to the final pic: So here is where I begin to Photoshop everything! :D I use a Wacom tablet, Intuos3 A4 oversized. Anybody who is even considering being a digital artist should buy one, they are a great investment, they speed up your workflow and you can add a lot more personal touches to your work. I work all the time in Photoshop CS4, I don't own any pirate or illegally downloaded versions. I bought my versions of the Creative Suites, always have and always will. It is best to stay up to date with the latest version of Photoshop. Learn the Save shortcut on your keyboard!!! This has saved my skin so many times, I press it everytime I create a new layer or add something new. And keep all your images as a multi layered .psd file. They will be big but you can go back months later and remember how you blended that colour or created your best illo. In the pic below, you can see where I've added in the scans of the playing cards and adjusted their brightness and contrast accordingly. The playing cards layer is just on a normal blending mode, as I will add all the messy effects onto the layers above. I add two layers of spray paint brushes I created and set them on the color burn blending mode, the colour I used for these was a dark blue from a full saturation colour pallette. I also add in a small amount of red sprays to give the image balance and to tie it to the playing cards. I then add in the scan of the old photograph which will be the background for the drawing. I adjust the brightness/contrast to bring out the decayed look of the photo and add some random splashes of colour and dirt. I also add a slight drop shadow to the layer which accidentally gives me more gritty effects on top of the playing cards. Also mess around with Photoshop while working, the amount of mistakes I've stumbled upon that have gone into finished pieces is just countless at this stage. I then add in my drawing, which is set at the 'Multiply' blending mode. Usually I take out the drawing out of the page, but I left in the page to give it more of a darker quality. I rotate and adjust the drawing layer until it is just right! Colour!!!!! Colour is always the most important of an illustration. It can make or break it in my opinion. You need to select colour swatches that are vital to the concept you are going with. Pick around 10 colours and stick to them. You may not end up using them all. In Photoshop CS4, I use the Luminosity Full Saturation set of swatches. These colours give my work a unique look and make it really bold on screen. I begin to add in the flat colours to the drawing, on a normal layer mode set at 40% opacity. Then I add another set of flat colours on another layer, but this one is set to the multiply blending mode. It starts to give me light and shade and eventually it looks more tonal. Highlights! This is where the image begins to look like a finished piece. But don't fool yourself into thinking so ;D I add another layer, set on normal blending mode at 55% to add the white of the character's eyes, the highlights of his clothes and skin and hair. As I said before, I wanted a grim, gritty, mysterious feel to the piece and I feel like I'm not there yet. I add another layer to the illustrations, to darken up the eyes and make the tones stronger in the image. I then add bright sprays of colour and extra grit on seperate layers to the image to beef it up. So now I stop!!!! This is where I take a breather from the piece, let it simmer for a day or so and come back to it. But during a deadline you might not have a day so it would be a couple of hours! I always go back the original inspiration and ideas I had for the piece, I flick back to my sketchbook and read my notes to see where I wanted to go with it. I reopen the file, with everything intact and add more touch ups, like making the white brighter in the highlights and adding the map at the bottom of the image and more dirt and grit. And then below is the final piece. I was so happy with it, it was probably the best illustration I had worked on. When I create my pieces and put them out onto the internet and blog them etc. I always examine the feedback I get from people and measure up what worked in my illustrations and what didn't. I always try to learn from criticism and see what are the good parts from a new piece that I can carry onto the next illustration I work on. Final look:

In this case study Olly Howe will not only show how he created his piece "Gone with the wind" but he will also walk you through the steps saying exactly what was done so you can learn and understand how the piece was made, and what techniques were used. A couple days ago I came across the work of Olly Howe and I have to say that I was amazed by such style that he has, a very impressive and unusual style that makes his portfolio one of the best I have seen lately. First I would like to thank Olly Howe for taking the time to make such a good case study, "Below is a very broad description of some of the techniques I have used in this illustration, it's by no means everything that I did but hopefully gives a little insight into how I work." For more of Olly visit 4playgraphix.com and behance Case Study WORKFLOW 1 : - Photograph by Konrad Bak. WORKFLOW 2: - Brought in scanned in water colour elements, masked out the model's body on these elements to give the bordered effect. Added sun. - Enhanced the color of the models skin, added more depth by duplicating the photo and applying an OVERLAY filter to the top layer and bringing the saturation down to 0. Also applied a SMART SHARPEN of 0.9 to the bottom photo layer and played with the LEVELS and CURVES until I was happy. - Started to add scratch detail with my Wacom tablet. WORKFLOW 3: - Added background color and a lot more scratch detail, also started to play around with the composition of the elements by duplicating the masked water color layers and leaving the link between layer content and mask un-checked, this allows the same mask to be applied across all duplicated layers . - Started to bring in colored water color elements. WORKFLOW 4: - Shuffled the composition and did more work to the top and bottom of the model to blend her out more effectively. To do this I used various brushes and opacity's to mask out areas, I then added scratches to follow the lines of the original photo to give a sketched effect to the masked out areas. - Added a LEVELS adjustment layer to the whole illustration which I could then play with through-out the design process to add or subtract depth. - Added larger water color textures to the background, set the layers to 20% opacity and completely DE-SATURATED them, then applied a LUMINOSITY filter. WORKFLOW 5: - Changed the composition and decided to add wings, this is the beauty of working completely freely, the design can take an unexpected turn at any point. The wings were way to dark so I used the DODGE tool at different opacity's to lighten them up, I also duplicated the wings layer and set the top layer to SOFT LIGHT, opacity 50% and saturation 0% to give more light depth. WORKFLOW 6: - Close up of detail, added more water colors and scratch effect, the scratching is done with my Wacom tablet and drawn on using the brush tool set at hardness 6%, diameters between 1 & 7 pixels and various different opacity's. WORKFLOW 7: - I wanted a lot more going on in the background so begun to add in some more layers and textures. - Added the forest scene to use as a base layer and masked out the top and bottom with the gradient tool. I then added a scratched wall texture above this layer and applied a COLOUR BURN filter and layer opacity of 60% - Brushed in a very light green colour behind and around the model to bring her out of the page more. - Added Mr Wolf and adjusted him to fit the image using levels and applying a yellow COLOUR filter layer. WORKFLOW 8 - Added a flowing dress element (which I cut from a photo) around the wings and a lot more textures. - Added 3 new color gradient layers one of them was a brown gradient running from the top left corner with a COLOR filter applied to create a more monotone area on the left hand side. - Moved the scratched wall layer above the wings to give them a subtle effect that looks almost painted. - Took the forest layer opacity to 20%. - Knocked back the sun layer to reveal some more color and added lots more detail with the Wacom tablet and also the brush tool with the mouse. - Added the horse, edited horse with DODGE tool and LEVELS to get correct lighting. WORKFLOW 9: - Liked all the color but decided it was a bit too much for this illustration and so added a gradient from orange to green bottom to top and set to 80% with a HUE filter applied to knock back all the color and create and overall look and feel that complimented the skin tones of the model. FINISHED PIECE: - Generally added more detail like the tattoo and the strip over her eyes, also added more scratch effects and played around with the overall lighting, colors and the LEVELS adjustment layer until I was happy. The process of changing colors can sometimes go on for quite a while before I'm happy. Close ups
In this tutorial I will show how to create an awesome illustration that can be printed as a poster to hang it on your wall. I broke down step by step from the beginning to the end so you can follow and understand exactly what I went through while making this piece, and you get to download the .psd at the end. Soul Rebel Tutorial - Visit my Behance To get the feeling tune in to Bob Marley - Soul Rebel In this tutorial I won’t be going into to small details, you have to know a bit more to understand what is being done but if you have any questions feel free to ask on the comments area. To begin this image as always I take my time surfing through tons of stock photos looking for that photo that will take my attention, as I have seen so many cool images lately on Abduzeedo, specially the daily inspiration I decided to try something different, something that will pop out with great lightning and color. In order to get that I wanted to get a full body shot of a girl just like the one I found at http://katanaz-stock.deviantart.com/ as you can see here: katanaz-stock has great photos with high quality, make sure you take a look. So I open a new file in Photoshop 18x24in 300dpi so at the end if the result is nice I can make a big print to put on my wall. You should always work with high dpi so your work can be printed with quality. I select the girl and paste it into a light gray background and this is how my image begins. What I want to do is to work on the girl photo by changing its color and illumination. First by adding Image>Adjustments>Curves with these settings giving a blue look to the photo. Curve Settings RGB Output: 119 Input: 157 Red Output: 121 Input: 153 Green Output: 165 Input: 133 Blue Output: 149 Input: 99 The result is good and I want to make the colors look more alike so I will make the light blue outfit more like the hat color by going to Image>Adjustment>Replace Color click on any part of the light blue and replace it to a light purple by using these settings: And you result should look like this: It’s almost the way I want, it’s always good to take time in order to get a good result at the end. What I want to do now is to get a better light on her face so I will duplicate the layer of her photo and using Image>Adjustments>Contrast (Brightness: 20 Contrast: 0) And on the layer mask (if you used one, if not just create one) use the Gradient Tool to keep only the top lighter. Now I will create a new layer on top of the girl and using the brush pack “41 Grunge Brushes” that was mention on the “10 Awesome Free Photoshop Brushes” I posted two weeks ago. So selected a couple of different brushes from this pack and painted the left side of the girl image using the same colors from her image. Using the Eyedropper Tool click on the girl to select a color and paint it with the same color on the new layer you created and your result should look like this: Now to give a even better look, I will go back on the girl layer and on the layer mask I will paint the left edge black using the same grunge brushes to give a impressions that the image is being painted on that side and I also cut the other leg on and angle. I want to use the angle that I created on her left leg to be a base for the light and possibly a direction for the typo in case I decide to write anything in the future. So I create a couple lines on a new layer on top of the background, this lines will give a special look on the background and also help me with the direction of everything and different spaces to work on. So now I will start to work on the background I like what I have so far and what I will try to get is some kind of abstract background that will blend in well with what I have so far. So I create a new layer on top of the gray background layer and with the Gradient Tool using the Radial Gradient I paint a circle from inside out to give a better illumination on the girl. Set the layer Fill to 75%. Now I want to add a little something on the background so I got a bokeh photo that I desaturated and added on to the background, put the layer mode to soft light and the Fill to 46 % Bokeh photo by http://ermenelwen.deviantart.com/ My Background is starting to look good still a lot of work to get the right look we need to get an impressive result. I like to experiment a lot, I tried a lot of thing until I got the results that I am walking through with you guys so it’s always to try a bunch a things and stick with the best results. My new layer is going to have a dark area on the bottom of the image, I used the Gradient Tool using the Radial Gradient to create the dark area on the bottom as you can see here, I set the Fill to 80%. Once again I create a new layer and with the Polygonal Lasso Tool I select the right bottom part of the image on the same angle the leg was cut and apply a Gradient Tool using Linear Gradient with white color. And set the layer Fill to 20% to get this look: Now using a Pattern I created by making a gray circle in the middle of a 30pixels square document as you can see here. Set that as a pattern with a transparent background. Now create a new layer and select the middle part of the background and Edit>Fill Using the pattern you just created. For a better look add a layer mask to it and using Gradient tool I create a shadow on the bottom part of it as you can see here Now I am going to create a new layer and get a regular round brush, go to brush settings and mark Scattering and paint the whole layer with black, white and gray as you see here: Now apply Filter>Blur>Motion Blur with the settings Angle: 45 Distance: 600 and set the layer mode to Vivid Light, and you should get something like this: (if it comes out too dark you can use brightness/contrast to make it lighter) On a new layer I will apply some color now making some yellow stripes following the lines that I made in the beginning, set the layer mode to Overlay and Fill to 25%. And you can also take a look of what you should have for the background layers. I am going to use this photo that I took in NYC a while ago, and I am going to paste it on top of the background layer Desaturate the photo Image>Adjustment>Desaturate and set the Fill to 40%. Our background is coming along very well now on top of the yellow stripes layer we are going to create another layer that we will add a white light created using the Gradient Tool > Radial Gradient Create another layer and with the Single Column Marquee Tool create a bunch of lines, when you get a good amount, rotate them on a 45 degree angle and place them on the top right as you can see on the image Now is time to give the special look to the image by adding a tiger coming out of her body, so I had this photo here for the longest time and I always had a feeling I would use it for something good, so I did. Photo from http://www.sxc.hu Selected the tiger, don’t really need to be a good selection since we are going to apply the same technique we did with the right side of the girl with the 41 Grunge Brushes, do that around your selection on the layer mask and set the layer to Overlay. You should get something like this: I want to create some smoke on that background so I make a new layer and using the smoke brush pack that I posted here 25 Free Photoshop Brushes. Make some smoke on the right side and set the layer Fill to 50% Just like we created the yellow stripes we are going to create a green stripe now only on the top part, set the layer mode to Soft light and the Fill to 75%. If you have been following all the steps here is a look at the layers and what you should have so far. We got a pretty good point so far I know the colors don’t look very impressing but I like to save that for last. Now I want to put some more stuff on the bottom right because I am thinking about adding a text there. So first thing I do is using this galaxy photo I have http://michalv.deviantart.com Put it on our image on top of the girl layer and place it on the bottom right, desaturate the layer and set the layer mode to Exclusion, also give it a layer mask and go around the edges so it won’t be to rough as you see here Now on a new layer I am going to add some smoke on that same area to fill up that space a little more. One more thing that I want to do is create a new layer and add some more of that Grunge Brushes at the bottom of the girls to blend in more, so I do that using some dark colors as you see. Our background is pretty filled up now and we got to the point that everything seems to be in place and looking good, to make an even better blend of the girl and the background I will add a typo on a angle right where here leg connects to the line. As I have been listening to Bob Marley all through out the process of creating this image I wanted to name it Soul Rebel because that song got stock on my head and I kept playing it as I was finishing the image. So I wrote down SOUL REBEL using the font MOD that can be found here Friday Fresh Free Fonts #1 set the layer Fill to 61% and to get the typo on the same spirit of the image I used that same effect on the typo using the Grunge Brushes as you can see. Now with a smaller font I wrote LET YOUR INSIDE OUT with a darker color and set the layer Fill to 69%, but the darker color kind of blended in to the background and it’s kind of hard to see so I create a new layer under it, with a regular brush make a small line using color white, give some motion blur to expand the line and place it right under the typo, just like I did here: On this point I can say that my composition is done, and I really like what I have, now is the part that I like the most, play with the colors. There is a lot of ways I do this and I am sure a lot of people do it differently and so on. What I did was add a new layer on top of all the others, paint it bright yellow and set the layer mode to Linear Burn. Now another layer on top and this one I am going to paint it light purple and set the layer mode to Linear Light and the Fill to 75%. As a result we get this beautiful color and result to our image. Now to give a final touch I create a new layer and I pick a very light blue as my color, and using the Gradient Tool / Radial Gradient I paint the light blue around my image, so I set the layer mode to Soft Light and the fill to 35% as you can see it gives a different color look around the image. I really like that but I only want that effect on the bottom of the image so I add a layer mask to it and using the same Gradient Tool this time Linear Gradient I take off the top part as you can see here with the layer. CONCLUSION My advice to everyone that followed the tutorial, and want to take their work to the next level is to experiment a lot while creating your image, have a main idea in mind and work around it, give time to get your work done. It’s better if you create one good piece in a month than have 10 crap ones by the same time. Patrick Gunderson is a designer, programmer and artist living and working in Los Angeles. He creates complex projects involving a combination of aesthetic and technical elements, using both sides of the brain (as per Patrick's words). He specializes in digital interactive mediums, but his traditional analog work reflects the sentiment of his digital work, taking apparent chaos and adding a sense of order. One of our readers, Demian Luis Villanueva, suggested a post about Patrick's work and when I started browsing around his pieces to compose the article, I felt in love right away. The colors, shades, creativity, softness and chaos surrounding his work gives us a very good impression. Patrick is specialized in pixels, but is also known for making pretty things in the analog world, so he can transit in both analog and digital world easily. Here we will show his great pieces done in adobe flash. They are all amazing... so for sure you will like it!! "There are two goals to the artwork that I am currently producing. First is the process. The challenge of composing images and code that create sprawling abstractions with multiple levels of detail excites and inspires me by itself. I am especially interested in the use of generative and emergent processes combined with traditional composition of color and line. Second is the emotional aspect of the work, which I liken to classical music. The thing that makes classical music great is its ability to invoke a subconscious feeling in the listener, even though they haven't been exposed any sort of back-story. There is a deep emotional reaction on a level beyond the surface of conscious thought, in a spiritual place where narrative is less important than raw feeling, where rhythm and harmony speak to the soul. This is the place I am most interested in touching with these works." Richard is one of my favorite artists on depthcore, with such a unique and mind blowing style, his work is great inspiration for all of us. On this exclusive interview the 18 year old rising artist tell us all about his works and his plans for the future, check it out! Let’s start with the usual, tell us a little about yourself? Well my name is Richard Roberts and I am 18 years old. I was born in the UK and moved to the US when I was about 5 years old. I have lived in 4 different states. I currently am living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have been designing for about 4 years but recently have been taking it very serious and putting huge amounts of hours in everyday. A few months ago I opened my freelance portfolio website www.theotherstream.com and that at the moment is going very well. My goal is to open my own studio one day and design for the rest of my life. How did you start your interest for design? When I was young around the age of 12 or 13 I used to play online video games. And one day I came across some designs at a game forum and was so intrigued by them. That led to me installing a copy of adobe Photoshop 4.0 on my computer. After a few months of playing around on it, I came to realize I was using an outdated version of Photoshop and that I was restricted. So I eventually purchased a copy of adobe Photoshop cs2 and spent the next few years getting familiar with the program. About two years ago I realized people made a living doing design work and I aspired to be like them. So I set out goals for myself and did everything possible to reach them. I am fascinated with all art forms and always have been. I think I have a drive to design in my blood as it's my number one passion in life. How did you get so good in Photoshop? I think perseverance, knowledge, aspirations, patience, effort and practice are all words that would describe how I got to where I am now. Everything I know is self taught and I spent years practicing learning how to do different things in Photoshop. The amount of time and care I put it my artworks is not just a day of work. It's over a weeks worth if not a month. Good artwork comes from obviously has good knowledge but also a lot of time and care. I do think however not everyone can be a designer or artist. I think you need a certain frame of mind in which you know what looks right and wrong. I think people are born with this ability. For example perspective shadows colors contrasts, are all different factors that I think people neutrally are good at doing. I would say I am one of those people. I have always had huge aspirations to be a successful freelancer and I am now getting to that point. So I would say me getting good is some neutral ability but also the time and effort and perseverance I have as an artist. How long do you usually take working on one piece? It depends from project to project usually. Personal work I like to spend a week at least but I sometimes take a few weeks. On cliental work I work on the deadlines, for example working on my computer arts commission I spent 4 days because the deadline was so soon. Those 4 days consisted of 8 or 10 hours a day though. So I spend hundreds of hours on pieces usually. Describe to us the usual process you do to create your images. I usually start off by thinking of a concept, after that is established I write down key words on a white board I have above my workspace. After I have a basic idea of what I want to do I begin finding photo's that would fit well etc... I then slave away for hours/days/weeks on the piece. The pieces usually come out a bit different then how I imagined it before hand. I like to experiment and try things when I am designing and I go with what looks good and it ends up being different from my original thought. Cliental work is another process on its own. I find client work easier in a sense as they are feeding you a concept/ideas some of the time. After I get the brief on the project I write down ideas and get to work. Depending on the deadline the time can vary. Sometimes I will go 12 hours straight working on a project per day if the deadline is soon. If the deadline is far away I like to do a little every day. One factor I make sure of is to be consistent through out all my designs, which ends in good finished results. Do you use any other tools besides Photoshop? The only thing I use besides Photoshop is a wacom intuos3 6x11 but currently my tool of trade is adobe Photoshop solely. I am hoping to branch off and use adobe illustrator a bit more. Other then using pen and paper to write down concepts and ideas Photoshop is the only program I use to design my artwork What inspires you to create such good pieces? I would say the desire to be a successful well known designer is a huge factor when it comes to me designing my pieces. I push myself each piece to produce a wonderful piece of art. There is nothing better then the satisfaction of knowing you yourself inspire others and people get enjoyment out of something you have created. I have huge goals and I design good pieces to get to those goals. Can you tell us about some of your goals and you projects for the future? Currently I am getting more and more established as a freelance artist by the day. An aspiration I have is for it to keep developing until eventually I have enough cliental that I can make a living off it. My highest goal is in a couple of years to open my own design studio and hopefully have some other designers working for me. I am currently working on a new piece inspired by Salvador Dali, I can't say when that will be released but I am sure people will enjoy it. I am also working on some side projects such as an album cover and some other works for depthcore. I will be also setting up a section on my website www.theotherstream.com where you can request prints of some of my designs. So there will be some new cool stuff coming your way, and I will be to sure to keep you guys posted.
