3D, concept art & motion design case study — The Quarry

Nomographic is proud to present "The Quarry," a stunning motion design, 3D, and concept art project. This captivating piece takes you on a journey to a fantastical medieval England, where a pair of weary travelers awaken an abominable rock golem within an abandoned limestone quarry. The project is a proof of concept for a larger story that explores themes of friendship, bravery, and honor.

Not only is "The Quarry" visually stunning, but it also represents Nomographic's dedication to innovation and efficiency in their production pipeline. By creating short pieces like this, Nomographic is able to test new software and perfect their process, ensuring that each project they work on is of the highest quality. From the intricate details of the medieval setting to the seamless motion of the characters, "The Quarry" is a testament to Nomographic's exceptional skills in the fields of motion design, 3D, and concept art.

Concept Art

A well-planned project starts with pre-production of which concept art plays a key part. It allows the production team to have reference point whilst developing and building assets. It is really useful as a unifying vision and helps keep things on track in terms of art direction.

Animation

After the models have been sculpted and rigged, the scene comes alive as keyframing begins. It’s prudent, however, to do it in stages and progressively increase the level of detail once the timing is locked.

3D Look Development and FX

The final visual aesthetic takes shape. Look development is worked on throughout the project, with refinements being added at every stage. These include textures, shaders, lighting, procedural simulations and compositing.

As part of exploration, we often throw in a wildcard idea. What if the scene took place at night with a raging storm cloud in the background illuminating our mystical villain from behind?

Music & Sound Design

Sometimes overlooked and often underappreciated, audio can be credited as 50% of the narrative experience. Sound design allows Nomographic to make the world believable and feel the weight of the character, whilst custom music sets the emotional tone and elevates the tension.

This piece, albeit short, is a great example of the type of work they do over at Nomographic. Their full-service offering and complete production pipeline allows them to have control over every step of the process when creating high-end 3D animation.
