The recent unveiling of the Rijeka Public Library's new building not only marks a significant architectural milestone for the Croatian city but also introduces a bold leap in branding and visual identity. Spearheaded by the design studio Cipmann, the project seamlessly marries form and function, crafting an identity that transcends conventional library aesthetics.

At the heart of this rebranding effort is the innovative use of the library's acronym, GK*R, with an asterisk strategically positioned to signify openness to new content and roles. This symbol, commonly overlooked, is reimagined to embody the library's dynamic shift towards hosting a myriad of activities, from festivals to educational programs, thereby challenging the traditional library paradigm.

The design narrative extends into the library's signage and wayfinding system, where practicality meets playfulness. Cipmann ingeniously infused the space with whimsical wordplays and literary references, integrating them into the library's environment. This approach not only enhances navigability but also enriches the visitor's experience, inviting engagement through curiosity and discovery.

Adopting a minimalist color scheme, the signage stands out amidst the kaleidoscope of books and materials, with the asterisk motif recurring as a subtle yet powerful brand element. Despite budget constraints, the design team employed cost-effective methods like die-cut vinyl stickers, demonstrating that creativity and resourcefulness can triumph over financial limitations.

The project's typography choices, including IBM Plex Sans and Anybody, complement the overall aesthetic, ensuring readability and aesthetic coherence. The collaborative effort extends to copywriting and photography, with Cipmann leading the charge, supported by Pictor d.o.o.'s print expertise.
