Letters to the future — Creating a book that lasts 1000 years

Ki saigon Letters to the future is conceived by Ki Saigon, a Vietnam based creative agency, as an initiative to bring together a group of like-minded people, who want to see a positive change in society, when it comes to our environmental impact on the planet. The entire project began with the fact that plastic we throw away lasts more than a thousand years. That means even a single-use, thrown away plastic bag will still be around when our great, great, great grandchildren are born - 1000 years from now.

Description

We wanted the people to feel that rather than the plastic, let us leave the future with hope, compassion and optimism. And bring out a duality in what really lies in our hearts for our future generations - compassion and hope - yet our current wastefulness with plastic goes directly against the betterment we wish for.The apt way to bring out the duality was to ask people to write letters to their great, great, great grandchildren, take that wonderful prose and print it on the very plastic we freely discard that litters our streets and streams.

We asked our friends to write a letter to their great, great, great, grandchildren because we had found a way to preserve their letters for a thousand years. Over the span of 4 months, we collected letters from all over the world. 22 countries - 327 letters. We teamed up with local recyclers to help us source the plastic we need.

We were able to collect different types of plastic bags, Styrofoam boxes, bubble wrap and various types of plastic sheets needed to create the base material. Collected plastics were ironed in between Teflon/baking paper to fuse them together. Each letter was then scanned, turned into silkscreens and individually hand-printed on each page, preserving the original handwriting of the author. Printed letters to the future, then were hand bound together between recycled plastic sheets. Creating a book that would now last 1000 years.

The book on one hand shows optimism, hope and compassion for the future of the planet. On the other hand, it shows the everlasting detriment of our actions when it comes to single-use plastic. Witnessing this project can be a visceral reaction, which is both beautiful and ugly at the same time.

The letters to the future book come with their own artworks ready to be displayed to spread awareness of the cause. It is open to schools and universities and museums to get access to the entire body of work free of charge to spread the word.

This project is sponsored by 4P’s to mark their 10th year anniversary to prove to their customers their commitment to providing world class flavors, yet work towards providing that sustainably. With this project, the corporation will publish their Annual Sustainability report.
