Explore Blinken OSA Archivum’s award-winning branding by STOKI, blending creativity with archival precision.
Branding an archival institution might seem like an uphill creative challenge. Yet, STOKI Studio took on this task for the Blinken OSA Archivum in Budapest and turned it into an award-winning case study. Their work not only redefined the institution’s visual identity but also showcased how collaboration and experimentation can yield innovative design solutions.
The Blinken OSA Archivum, a repository of Cold War history and human rights documents, has long been a cornerstone of cultural and historical research. Recognizing the need for a modern transformation, the Archivum embarked on a dual mission: redesign its website and establish a cohesive visual identity. What started as two separate projects soon merged into one comprehensive overhaul, presenting a unique design opportunity.
STOKI’s approach centered around collaboration. As Fanni Andristyak from Blinken OSA noted, “No ideas were brushed off.” This open and iterative process ensured every perspective was considered, leading to a solution that was not only visually compelling but also deeply functional.
At the heart of the new identity lies the logo: a stylized “A” composed of books leaning against each other. This design captures the essence of the archives while maintaining a modern aesthetic. To enhance the institution’s communication, STOKI introduced a flexible design system featuring four core colors and a bespoke iconography set. These elements bridge the diverse facets of the Archivum, from education and research to cultural events.
Beyond the visual identity, the revamped website integrates UX solutions that make navigating the vast collections intuitive and engaging. Specialist Áron Fridvalszky played a key role in ensuring the site balances accessibility with sophistication, reflecting the Archivum’s open and dynamic character.
STOKI’s work has been celebrated widely, earning three prestigious awards, including the Black Pixel Grand Prize at the RGB – Kreatív Design Awards. These accolades underscore the power of thoughtful branding to elevate even the most niche institutions.
This case study is a testament to the potential of branding to blend artistry with utility. STOKI’s design not only modernized the Blinken OSA Archivum but also solidified its role as a cultural touchstone.
