Motion designer James Bali recreates BMW’s iconic E39 M5 ad, using CG artistry to push motion design boundaries.
Speed is a tough visual challenge. It demands precision, attention to physics, and an understanding of how the human eye perceives motion. James Bali, a seasoned motion designer and CG artist, took on this challenge in his latest work—an ambitious remake of BMW’s legendary E39 M5 ad. Instead of a land rocket, Bali swaps in the Koenigsegg Agera RS, crafting an intense high-speed sequence that puts motion design techniques to the test.
The Creative Process
Bali’s goal was to recreate the ad’s raw energy while leveraging the latest motion design tools. The E39 M5, equipped with a camera rig, needed to keep pace with a supersonic vehicle attempting a land speed record. Since a digital model of the original land rocket wasn’t available, the Koenigsegg Agera RS became the perfect substitute.
The Challenges of Speed in Motion Design
Depicting speed convincingly in CG is no small feat. Bali employed a mix of motion blur, procedural lens flares, camera shakes, and atmospheric elements like dust and flying debris to heighten realism. These elements mimic the physics of high-speed motion, ensuring that the Agera RS appears to be tearing through the landscape at 400 km/h.
Another crucial aspect was the sound design. Speed isn’t just seen—it’s heard. Bali meticulously layered sound effects, from engine roars to wind resistance, building an immersive audio landscape. The result? A heavily condensed Adobe Premiere timeline packed with every sonic detail needed to sell the illusion of velocity.
Recognition and Impact
The final product didn’t just meet Bali’s expectations—it exceeded them. The project won a Video of the Day award from Motion Design Awards, cementing its place as one of Bali’s standout works. The piece demonstrates how motion design can bring even the fastest machines to life, blending CG artistry with storytelling.
Motion design continues to evolve, and Bali’s work showcases its potential when technical mastery meets creative ambition.
