A study of the generative design system for the Bengal Classical Music Festival by Shafiq Alam, translating ragas into fragmented three-dimensional arts.

The core of the composition relies on a three-dimensional rendering of a musician. This grey, stone-like figure sits in quiet contemplation. The sculpture then fragments into horizontal ribbons. These ribbons flow outwards to mirror the sonic waves of the performance. Flat, saturated yellow backgrounds pair with magenta banners to create extreme spatial tension. Each visual output responds to the specific tempo and structure of the ragas. A custom generative design system drives this transformation. This process ensures that no two posters share the exact same deformation. The resulting visuals capture both the structure and the fluidity of the music.

Deconstructing Sound Through a Generative Design System

Typographically, the posters use a disciplined, geometric sans-serif typeface. The uppercase letterforms lock into horizontal magenta blocks. Generous tracking creates a clean rhythm. This contrast balances the chaotic, flowing lines of the fragmented statue. In print, the contrast between flat inks and the rendered shadows is pronounced. The bright yellow fields command immediate attention. The subtle gradients on the grey figure invite closer inspection. The design team printed the identity on heavy, uncoated stock. This texture absorbs the ink, giving the flat colors a tactile quality. This layout relies on structural hierarchy and strict alignment to balance the organic forms.

Historically, music festival branding relies on generic instrument illustrations or photographic collages. Alam rejects these clichés. The design studio positions the identity at the intersection of algorithmic art and cultural heritage. They allow the generative design system to dictate the visual outcomes. This system respects the spiritual depth of classical music. At the same time, it pushes the boundaries of modern brand design. This identity represents a shift in cultural branding. It shows how technology can honor tradition. The work earned international recognition. It won a Red Dot Award in 2017.
