HEX studio designed a modular geometric block system for Grafana that maps 20+ products into one semantic visual language — each shape describes exactly what its product does.
HEX, a Vancouver-based experimental creative studio, has designed a modular geometric block system for Grafana that unifies the observability platform's ecosystem of more than 20 products into a single, semantically coherent visual language — each visual treatment describes precisely what its corresponding product does.
The challenge was significant. Grafana's portfolio spans observability, scanning, analytics, AI, and performance testing — a technically dense suite with no obvious visual thread. Ayush Soni, HEX's Founder and Creative Director, approached this by making the blocks themselves semantic rather than purely decorative. Scanning becomes lines moving through blocks. Observability is rendered as a zoomed inspection within block interiors. AI flows as organic, fluid movement layered over the rigid grid. Every product in the ecosystem gets a visual metaphor that communicates its function before a single word is read.

A Grafana Brand Identity Built on Density Control
The color system pairs cyan, magenta, green, yellow, and orange against black — a palette that signals technical precision while remaining warm and inviting for Grafana's open-source community. The grid logic itself references Grafana's own dashboard panel architecture, so the identity literally echoes the product interface. Icons use rounded corners to introduce approachability without abandoning the modular vocabulary.
What makes the system especially well-engineered is its density control mechanism. Teams can adjust layering, color saturation, and compositional complexity depending on context — from minimal internal documents to saturated hackathon posters. The brand presence scales without breaking. Soni explains: "The principle is that you control the brand's presence by adjusting how many layers you use, how much colour and how complex the compositions get."
The Grafana x HEX project is a strong example of how tech branding is maturing in 2026 — moving beyond surface-level gradients toward systematic visual languages that carry real meaning. When a Grafana brand identity can communicate product function, community warmth, and technical depth simultaneously through a single geometric primitive, that is design doing serious strategic work.
