Interview with Brian Luong + Giveaway I think it was about time to see the rise of new artists with a really meticulous attention to details, harmony and layout on the illustration area. Brian Luong is one of this hyper skilled illustrators that can be both perfectionist and stylish at the same time. Today we have the opportunity to talk with him about career, life and other subjects, hope you enjoy. You can see more from Brian Luong on the following links: Website Behance Blog Tumblr Society 6 1) First of all I would like to thank you for doing this interview, it's an honor for us to present more about you to our readers. I would like to start by asking you about when you first started getting interested in illustration and art? I had an interest in drawing throughout my childhood, but I didn't start taking note of specific illustrators and artists until around my junior or senior year of high school. I started looking around at different artists and illustrators during that time, and pursuing a career in art started materializing as a feasible option. 2) Which artists do you use as reference? I admire a ton of artists and illustrators. Zach Johnsen, Audrey Kawasaki, Matthew Woodson, Aaron Horkey, and Kilian Eng to name a few. Lately I've been looking towards my favorite artists' work not so much as a reference for my own work, but more so to avoid doing what they're doing/avoid things that have already been done. 3) Your style is quite influenced by classic art styles. How did you develop this style and how would you describe it? I saw a lot of classical art during my time in art history courses throughout college and really liked it. I also was introduced to Aaron Horkey's work later on and believe that seeing his work played a huge role in the development of my style. The style my work portrays nowadays is a culmination of the various techniques that I've admired throughout the years, and I would describe it as a combination of methodical hatching, broad fills of toned-down color, lightly sanded and finished with specks of color and distress. 4) Describe us a bit about your creative process while creating a piece. My creative process is fairly straightforward, I think. First I'll roughly sketch out my illustration in Photoshop and tighten it up as I go along. If I'm not quite sure what I wanted to draw and just jumped into sketching anything that came to mind, then the sketching phase usually takes awhile as I try to develop a concept along with the sketch. After my sketch is done and tightened up a bit, I'll start working on drawing out the final linework. Getting the lines drawn out usually takes me the longest. After the lines are established, I add colors and effects, and finish up the piece by finalizing colors and adding some subtle textures. 5)What's would you consider the best moment on you career till now and what would be the worst one? Please share with us more about your path. I feel that I've been extremely fortunate in my career so far (knock on wood) and my worst moment isn't so bad at all. I was working on an illustration for a client and everything was going swell. I sent off the final artwork thinking that I was going to knock the socks off my client, but then the client emailed back to say that he was disappointed in the final art. That hit me hard, but I learned a great lesson through that experience. In the end I made revisions and updates to the artwork and they really loved it, and everyone was happy. As for best moment, that's a tough one since there are a couple of moments I can pick from. One moment that stands out to me the most was when my work was featured over at Change the Thought. The site was one of my first go-to sites for finding out about new artists when I was first getting into art and I followed the site for quite some time, so when I found out that my work was featured on the site I was super excited about it. 6) How do you describe your daily routine? I wake up and do some menial tasks around the house. Then I'll check my email, reply, and then start working for the day. I usually continue working throughout the day, with breaks in between, until I go to bed. 7) What's your favorite media to work with and why? Right now my favorite media to work with is digital. When I work digitally, there's practically no set-up time. I don't have to clear my table for space, take out my materials or mix my colors. I just turn on my computer, open up Photoshop and I'm good to go. I also don't have to worry too much about making mistakes thanks to the ability to undo and create multiple files of my piece at various stages of the process. The big downside to working digitally is not having a tangible piece of work after the work is complete without having to take the extra step of printing the work. A close second would be working with ink pens. The simplicity of just worrying about my linework and not having the undo function to save me is a nice change of speed from working digitally. 8) Tell us five lessons you believe are really important for every illustrator. 1: Even when you're at the point where you feel like you've pushed yourself to your very limit, there's actually always some more room to push yourself further. Take a short break and come back to your work with fresh eyes. 2: Learn how to take a critique without taking it too personally. It's a challenge at times, but you'll benefit more from the feedback if you listen objectively. 3: You will experience failure at some point during your journey as an artist/illustrator, and that is completely fine and normal; failure and hardships are required for strong growth. 4: Be humble about your craft. 5: An obvious one, but practice practice practice. Reading up on illustration and art technique helps out a lot, but the real progress is made when you're working with your mediums of choice and practicing the techniques you've been reading about. 9) Tell us five websites that you like to visit. -Ffffound -Tumblr -OMG Posters -Behance -Facebook 10) Thanks again for your time, please leave a final message for the ones who are starting out on this kind of business. Take in a lot of stimulus; look at a lot of art, photography, and reference material. Read books and watch movies. Take a look at some books on illustration/graphic arts and learn more about the legal side of the field. Create the art you enjoy creating, and don't give up. GIVEAWAY WINNER So I think everyone is excited to know who's the winner so here's the one Brian found the best: Thanks everyone who participated, more giveaways to come on ABDZ soon.

The project started few months ago as fan art and slowley grow bigger and bigger to finally end up as series. First round of five of my fav tv shows and also - first round of prints! I've tried to approach the project as both fan and also what i would think was important from the show's perspetive - the essence. The Essence for me was closely related to music in these shows, a connection become the core of each idea. For more from Adam Spizak visit spizak.com, Behance, Twitter. Breaking Bad - Walter White Walter was my first choice as well as Breaking Bad being my No.1 show. Not many character go such a big way from where they started. Alexander's song: Truth usted in Ep1 of the 4th season is such a great score that works amazingly with the show and with Walter's journey. The Walking Dead - Rick Grimes You gotta love how dark Rick got in season 4, just to see him redeem himself by the end of it. Great character in what is one of the best shows on tv contradicting what people think when they think of zombies. Kari Meredyth Kimmel - Black fit great into The Road feel of the show. Mad Men - Don Draper Don is such a deep and complex character that i know people who watch this show just for him and it's hard to argue about that. I loved him from the first episodes when he drives away with the birthday cake. The beatniks scene with Don McLean - Waters of Babylon was what made the tone of the show for me and him as main character: How do you sleep at night? On a bed made of money. Californication - Hank Moody We just love to see Hank in trouble, but deep down we always hope we will fine and finally get back with Karen. The show was at its best around season 2-4. The natural selection for the track was The Rolling Stones - You can't always get what as it's constant backdrop to what i think is the essence of this show - man being lost. Dexter - Dexter Morgan Dexter came such a long way from his dark beginning to just darker place which i guess is hard for a serial killer. ;) Bu t we like Dexter becuase he tries hard to be best version of himself, sometimes dark sometimes comic. Daniel Licht - Hide Your Tears give a great score to make you care. The Prints We have all 5 prints for sale exclusive on Funkrush. Our friend Sam Wolfe Connely was kind enough to make a giveway of two copies of his "Cybil" 8" x 8" print on our blog. For those who are not familiar with Sam, he's a young skillfull artist that we already had the opoortunity to feature and to interview here at Abdz. You can see more of Sam's arwork at his Blog or at his Official Website. Story: A bored friend and I where tampering around with an old Ouija board of mine one night with nothing to do. Then we actually started getting some coherent responses to the questions we were reading out loud. She said for us to call her 'Cybil'. She confessed to us a little bit about her life. She talked about the things most precious to her. About her pet lamb that had been sent to slaughter, the old woods around her home, and the night she burned in her bed. She talked about standing in my hallway at night. She talked about how the moths liked to flutter around and land on her in the dark. The same flame that burned her in her bed attracts the moths at night.Winner The winner for this giveaway was Kelly McKernan Cavanah Thanks for everyone who participated, we will have more giveaways soon.
The Pixelmator team has just launched the new version of their really cool photo editing tool called Pixelmator 2.1 Cherry. We have been playing with a beta version for a few days and we are really impressed with the new features especially the new Effect Browser and of course the speed. To give you an extra incentive to play with Pixelmator we will show you how to design a really cool vintage style image and the best part, we will give out 3 copies of the new Pixelmator and an iPod Touch. So the rules are simple. Download the Pixelmator file and come up with a version based on this image. You have total freedom to do anything you want. Once you get your design, just post it at http://raw.abduzeedo.com/submit with the title Pixelmator Contest: Title of your design. Step 1 Open Pixelmator and create a new document. I am using 2880x1800 pixels. After that import a photo. I am using a photo of cherries by kksummers found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/tkksummers/2561778086/. Step 2 One of the coolest new features in Pixelmator 2.1 is the new Effect Browser. You can browse and preview the effects in real time. Really cool. So Let's start adjusting the image. Scroll down to the Color Adjustments. Step 3 Select Levels and then adjust the Gray to 55%. The easiest way to apply the effect is by either double clicking or drag the thumbnail of the filter to the image. Step 4 Select Exposure and change it to -10. Step 5 Scroll down and go to Vintage. Vintage is a new set of presets that create nice vintage filters like Instagram. Select Wormwood and change the Saturation to -10 and the Vignette to 100%. Step 6 Select the Rectangle Shape. Add a white rectangle in your design. Step 7 Add another rectangle with the Rectangle Shape tool. Then duplicate it and position the new ones like the image below. Step 8 Add another rectangle, this time in black. Position it in the end of the big retangle and click on the little gear icon on the top left of the canvas window. Select Make Editable. Move the vertices to create a sort of 3D ribbon effect. Use the image below for reference. Step 9 With the Type Tool (T) add the texts Pixelmator and Cherry using the font Mensch http://www.losttype.com/font/?name=mensch. For the Pixelmator text use black and for the Cherry text use white. Step 10 With the Rectangle Shape tool add another rectangle, this time like a line going from the edge to the word Cherry. After that duplicate 3 times to create lines like the image below. Step 11 Add another text, this time the "2.1". Then with the Ellipse Shape tool, create a circle underneath the 2.1. Step 12 Group all these shapes and texts, then change the Blending of the group to Screen. That way the black will be transparent creating a really nice cut out effect. Step 13 Go to Layer>Add Layer Mask. Then with the Brush Tool (B). Select the Grunge Brushes preset and paint with black a few dirty areas like the image below. Step 14 Select the photo layer and then drag the CMYK filter to the image. Use the image below for the values. The idea of this effect is to create a sort of halftone style to the image. Conclusion You can rotate the Pixelmator to add more style or you can even rotate everything. The idea is to explore and that's why we are runing this tutorial and giveway. We want you to download the Pixelmator file and create a new version using the new Pixelmator 2.1 Cherry. We will pick the 3 winners that will get a license of the new Pixelmator and for the first place we will have an iPod Touch as well. Download the Pixelmator file Download the Pixelmator file used for this tutorial
