Explore the bold branding and visual identity of BIFF by Studio STOKI, showcasing Budapest’s cultural essence with timeless design.
Budapest International Film Festival (BIFF) has made a striking debut in the European film scene, thanks to its thoughtfully crafted visual identity. Designed by Studio STOKI, the branding reflects both the cultural richness of Budapest and the fresh, experimental nature of the festival.
As a newcomer, BIFF faced the challenge of building its brand from scratch while simultaneously organizing a major event. Founder Kristóf Horváth described the process as “starting everything from zero,” which meant creating a cohesive team, a recognizable brand, and a lasting visual identity—all under tight deadlines.
A Visual Language Rooted in Culture
Studio STOKI took inspiration from Budapest’s rich heritage, balancing Eastern Bloc aesthetics with contemporary design sensibilities. Instead of relying on a retro style, the team developed a clean, bold look that felt both modern and timeless. The decision to make blue the “hero” color gave the identity an elegant and distinctive edge.
Rather than adopting a mascot—like the Berlin bear or Locarno leopard—BIFF opted for a design anchored in typography and film stills. This approach gave the branding flexibility and avoided overt symbolism. However, the merchandise featured a playful, cinema-inspired illustration by local artist Boglárka Balogh. Her line art, which captures the festival’s main venue, added a quirky and human touch to the identity.
Challenges and Creative Solutions
One of the project’s biggest hurdles was representing Budapest without falling into clichés. Studio STOKI avoided overly branded merchandise and instead focused on versatile design elements that would resonate with both local and international audiences. This decision helped BIFF stand out while staying true to its roots.
The team’s collaborative effort and shared enthusiasm were critical to navigating the complexities of such a multifaceted project. As Horváth explained, drawing from fine arts and Budapest’s cultural history not only enhanced the design but also strengthened the team’s connection to the project.
A Bold Future for BIFF
Studio STOKI’s work on BIFF exemplifies how thoughtful design can communicate a brand’s mission and values. The visual identity captures the festival’s ambition, creating a strong foundation for future growth. With its timeless yet fresh approach, BIFF is set to become a standout event in the European film landscape.
