Mitch Monson, the VP and Creative Director of Brand Design and Animation MOCEAN shared the beautiful branding and logo system work they did for the NBC Sports Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. I still cannot believe we are already talking about 2020, but yes, you are right, another decade is over and to celebrate the new one we have the summer Olympic Games, which for the first time, will have sports like surfing as part of the program. Super exciting.
After inspiring collaborations with NBC Sports on their 2016 Rio Olympics and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, MOCEAN was very honored to be commissioned to develop the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Partnering with designer/illustrators Aya Kotake, Burke Miles, Stanley Ng and Jamie Givens, MOCEAN was challenged to design an identity that would capture the spirit and energy of Tokyo and inspire a sense of humanity, competition and movement for the Summer Games.
The unique challenge with these NBC Sports Olympic identities is to develop a deep custom and memorable look to the typography so that it can stand on its own when necessary. It was important to NBC Sports that, even if the NBC Peacock, the Olympic Rings and the Year were removed from the mark, American Audiences will know this is a NBC Sports' signature broadcast of the Games.
